Gun-related violence on college campuses has increased in the past fifty years. Thousands of people die each year from gun violence in the United States. Gun violence has affected many families because of the deaths that it has caused. Gun violence has infiltrated communities and has not only caused harm to individuals but also to society as a whole. Students should not carry firearms onto college grounds, because it can lead to an escalation in violent crimes. Students being able to carry firearms on campus would lead to crime. In college, students are going to experience obstacles such as meeting new people and being in a new environment. While it is a great thing, for students to virtue out and gain independence, it also can have a negative impact such as joining a crowd who abuses drugs. College students that surround themselves with people who experiment with drugs are more likely to try the substance as well. Also, college students are full of curiosity and are willing to explore new aspects in their lives. It’s not unusual for college students to try out drugs. In addition, college life has many factors that subject some students to lead to drug abuse such as stress and peer pressure. As students, they face more coursework than what they are used too, obligations, or some may have part time jobs and trying are to …show more content…
As we are aware that drugs are a substance which have a physiological effect when it is introduced to the body and can become addictive. Also, that the use of drugs impairs social and psychological functioning meaning it can alter a person’s thinking and judgment. If a person’s thinking ability is in question then why should he or she have the responsibility to carrying a firearm around innocent
Out of allthe ways to make college campus safer, guns should not be one of them.
In addition to youth and gun crimes, much debate has sparked over whether or not college officials should allow students to carry concealed weapons with them on campus. Renee Montagne has interviewed many people, college students included, in her article, “Texas Lawmakers Aim for Guns on College Campuses” About their opinions of guns on campus. Many disagree, stating that it is a terrible idea, and will lead to gun-related accidents, or mass killings, like the one that took place at Virginia Tech (Texas Lawmakers). Some people, such as Stephen Wright, point out the fact that by simply carrying a legally weapon does not cause mass killings or
School shootings, gang violence, drive by shootings, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed every day. Members of our society criticize their own people for this violence while they continue to sit back and do nothing about it. These acts of violence have many contributing factors. Violence in our country today is escalating because we don't control the distribution of the guns sold. There are not enough restrictions on guns sold legally. The illegal purchase of guns through the black market is out of control. There is not enough education on the usage and storage of guns.
Concealed weapons would not only cause a distraction from learning of college students but it will also cause a distraction moviegoers from enjoying movies or office workers from doing their job. This would also would also increase the number of suicides. Research shows that 90% of suicides are committed off campus and most college students 21 and up live off campus. 21 is the minimum age to carry a concealed handgun license in most states. Wondering whether or not the people around in class, or the professors, are secretly carrying a loaded gun is slightly undermining and could be harmful for a positive learning environment. Someone looking to attack a school or university campus is on a mission with little concern for their own outcome, so the possibility of other people being armed wouldn’t be a strong leash. Concealed guns being present in class could serve as distraction and a fear for students, overcoming the gun’s ability to possibly serve as protection in case of a threat. having a legal concealed carry is a personal decision for many people in consideration to their individual safety. This is why handguns should not be permitted on college
Students and staff with guns are not only a danger to other people, intentions malicious or not, but also to themselves. Students under high stress and emotional distress in general do not need to be around tools that can cause so much harm with so little effort. This argument, with the resounding knowledge of the high use of mind altering drugs on college campuses, mixed with the statistics surrounding the unhealthy psyche of students should be enough to show that campus carry is a bad
In the African American community, 83 percent of homicides are due to gun violence. In black communities gun violence is commonly misunderstood as gang affiliation, which is false. Studies show over 50 percent of gun crimes committed were not related to a felony, but were due to some disagreement. The gun epidemic in predominantly black communities aren’t just disagreements, but race wars, police brutality, gang related, and even no reason at all.
Everyday 93 Americans are killed by guns. Whether it is due to homicide or suicide, it does not matter. At the end of the day gun violence is increasing exponentially. In numerous states, gun laws have been placed in the hopes of reducing gun violence. But now many people believe that gun violence should be treated as a public health problem. I for one feel that gun violence should be put in the category of public health. Every year more than 30,000 people are victims to gun related incidents. It has become such an issue that gun violence is causing more deaths than some life threatening diseases.
Due to the significant number of violent shootings on college campuses in the past recent years, many have argued that both students and teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed handgun on campus to defend themselves. They believe it will help stop shootings and make campuses safer, but will it? These people who are suggesting this are only thinking about their own safety and not thinking about the consequences that will flourish due to guns on campus. Guns on campus would not only lead to an escalation in violent crimes, but will lead to an increase in the number of incidents. Allowing people to bring guns on college campuses won’t solve anything; instead we should be limiting the amount of weapons to make it a safer environment for both students and teachers.
In 2015, 13,367 people lost their lives due to gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. The Archive also states that out of that number, 693 were children from ages 0-11. We can all agree that there is indeed a problem that we have to address. The solution to that problem, however, has been debated by many. I believe the solution to this problem exists in three parts: Mandatory training and licensing along with more heavily secure gun storage, stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm—disabilities and criminal records should be more deeply looked into before transaction—and finally, equipping teachers at highs schools with the right kind of weaponry to prevent mass shootings.
Bruce Willis once stated, “If you take guns away from legal gun owners, then the only people who would have guns would be the bad guys”. This introduces the controversy of whether guns should be allowed on college campuses throughout the United States or not. There have been multiple public shootings on campuses throughout America, but there is no definite solution to stopping these catastrophes from occurring. Many politicians and citizens are asking themselves the same question: Will guns make students safer or endanger them? This statement can be disputed both ways because many believe that college students are not mature enough to handle guns while others argue that they are adults and have the right to
With students not personally knowing their classmates they are not familiarized with what they are capable of doing with a gun in hand. Suicide is highly seen in college students, and allowing guns in a campus would surely increase successful suicides. In particular, Skorton and Altschuler states, “We don’t need to put more firearms in the hands of college students, a cohort that includes emotionally violate young men and women and abusers of alcohol and drugs” (630). With that, it allows us to understand that with stress and with mixing substances students aren’t in the correct state of mind. It distracts them from thinking straight, and acting in ways they will regret and lead to great consequences. For example, “If permitted destructiveness, health issues, burglary, and accidental murders will increase (Students For Gun-Free Schools 635). In other words, college students are most likely to attend parties and consume alcoholic beverages, and there are high chances that students might disagree pull out a gun a shoot someone. Allowing guns it could facilitate the act of suicide having a gun at hand distance. Leaving a gun behind on accident can lead to a big chaos. Someone will most likely take it, and if they commit murder the person’s name under the gun will be the primary suspect. As well with naïve gun holders can increase accidental
In the past couple of years, violence in colleges have been on the rise. Many crimes happen that the media don’t inform the public about because they don't want college to seem as dangerous as it really is. Guns made for people for a means of defense can be used to save lives and can also be used to end them. Colleges will lose a lot of money when students find out just how dangerous the campus can be and they should want students to feel safe. Pepper spray is not always able to take out a shooter or anyone that is armed for a long period of time. Just holding a gun makes a person feel safe whether it has ammo in it or not. Even though guns on campus can bring harm to others when a psychopath can use his or her gun right for killing rather
“Colleges and universities occupy a special place in American society. They are much more than a series of buildings and collection of individuals. Instead, they are dynamic living and learning environments where individuals with varying levels of maturity interact, often under stressful circumstances. While recognizing the right of responsible individuals to possess firearms under other circumstances, the unique characteristics of a university campus make the presence of firearms problematic. The shootings that have occurred in recent years at US colleges and universities have generated passionate debate about how best to prevent such violence and whether persons should be allowed to carry concealed guns on campuses. Experts believe there is no credible evidence that students or staff carrying guns would reduce crime. In fact, research has shown that the brains of most college students have not fully developed regarding impulse control and judgment” (Dickerson). Therefore, guns should not be allowed on college campuses because it would lead to an escalation in violent crime, distract from the learning environment, and lead to accidental discharge incidents.
The last reason why college should refuse to allow any kind of weapons on campus is that it can affect schools’ reputation. Usually, parents want to make sure that the school or university their child is going to go to has a good and strong background for its excellent faculty, social activities and students’ achievements. Therefore, it is important for educational institutions to keep their reputation at a high level, so that way it can attract peoples’ attention. Otherwise, such big issues as fatal shootings in high schools or colleges can affect schools and colleges in terms of enrollment, attendance and suspension
Guns and crime. These two words sound interesting, right? Now think about it deeply, do they really link to each other? Do guns surely lead to crime and violent issues? If so, should governments set restrictive rules for people who own and use the guns, such as provide the mental health reports, and test the shooting skills before purchasing the guns? These questions have been mentioned and discussed over and over again in today’s world. We can often hear the news about gun violence, such as a tragic mass shooting somewhere around the world and tons of victims who died from the accident, or husband that shot his wife by accident. Thus, many people, especially people in America, are asking, and even doubting whether or not it is beneficial to own guns at home without a license. In my opinion, I think that owning a gun can be helpful sometimes in some ways, as it can always be the extremely powerful and helpful weapon for self-defense, especially when help from the law enforcement officers are not available.
