Madi Mckinnon Ms. Herring 7th Grade ELA 11/09/2017 How was Halloween created? Trick-or-Treat! Happy Halloween! Have you wondered how Halloween started? It’s roots started in European traditions with the Festival of Samhain. As you can tell Halloween wasn’t all about getting candy. Halloween is fun to me because you get candy. However, when Halloween started it wasn’t all about candy; it was about honoring demons and scaring them away. Halloween started in the Celtic culture in Ireland. Halloween was at first a pagan holiday to honor the non-living people. Druid religion’s New Year was November 1, but they would start celebrating October 31. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III titled November 1st as a time to give credit to demands. Trick-or-Treating and dressing up started in the 16th century in Ireland, Scottland. Have you heard of a whale? A whale is when you go door-to-door in costume asking people for candy. They would exchange food for poem or songs. Halloween also started with the Celtic fair of Samhain. The Celtic fair of Samhain means summer’s end, Which fair of Samhain represented the end of harvest. The fair of Samhain is when people would have bonfires and wear costumes to get rid of demons. Some people think the Festival of Samhain is when Lord Samhain, the Lord of the Darkness, would arrive in search of the spirits to take them to the underworld. Some people say the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain is considered the earliest root of Halloween. Halloween uses some of the things they used in the same festival of Samhain. Halloween was called All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago referred to it as that. Most European people called Halloween, All Hallows Eve. All Hallows Eve is the evening before All Saints Day, which was created by Christians to convert pagans, and is celebrated on November 1st. Gaels believed that Halloween was a time when the walls between our world and the next became thin and porous, allowing spirits to pass through, come back to life on the day and damage their crops. The Catholic church dignified demands on this chosen day, known as Hallows Eve for them. Hallows Eve marked a pivotal time of year when seasons changed. The spirits
