When I was in middle school I had a really rough time. I was emotionally distraught and generally confused about myself and where I fit in the world. My parents had divorced when I was eleven, and my Dad who had been diagnosed with PTSD was in and out of the picture. My mother who had tried to reach me every way she could felt helpless until our family Doctor gave her the name of a child therapist. This woman was amazing! She listened to me without judgement and offered solutions to help soothe my bottled emotions. She helped me to realize it was okay to be just who I was. She validated my feelings and she changed my life. That was the moment I knew I wanted to be a counselor. My life has taken me down many different paths. I am not the typical …show more content…
The counseling program at Wichita State stood out to me for the range in counseling programs offered and the ability to work with my schedule. I believe attending classes rather than completing online is the best option for me. I know there will have to be some sacrifices made to achieve this goal, but I am ready and committed and my family is behind me one hundred percent.
Talking it out has always been a way for me to cope with the difficult times in my life. Friends and family can be great listeners, but they are often biased in their attempt to help because they know what you want to hear. A counselor can look at your situation objectively, and know the right questions to ask to help you understand what you are feeling. I have seen several therapists over the years and they have always been just what I needed to help bridge the gap I was feeling in my life.
I want to help others. I want to offer the kind of non-judgmental environment that my own therapists have provided me over the years. I love to learn and I love to help others learn. I want to help others be the best they can be and feel good about where they are in the moment. Sometimes that’s all it takes, that person who listens to you, connects to you, and maybe even saves
We all have been in situations where we hit a brick wall in our life and are unsure of the next step or the next move to make. We have close friends to whom we can turn and reach out to, but in some situations, are they really our best option for help? Friends are needed for support on many levels, but on others, professional reinforcement may be of greater good. With that said, I challenge you the reader and ask the questions: What is counselling? How does a counsellor
It was during my senior year of college that I decided I wanted to become a school counselor. Up until my senior year in college at Penn State I did not know where I wanted to take my career but I knew I wanted to work in a school setting and I knew that I wanted to work with kids. When it came time to choose an internship site for my last semester, I chose an alternative school called Buxmont Academy in Bethlehem where I would be shadowing two of their school counselors as well as engaging with the students themselves. I got to work with these children on a more personal level, gaining an understanding of their emotions, experiences, and difficulties, as most of these children came from broken homes, and drug and alcohol related settings. I am interested in becoming a school counselor because I want to help. When I become a counselor I want to make a difference in a child’s life whether that be by simply giving them support that they might not have in their lives or helping them make changes to better themselves and their futures. A counselor has such an important role in helping to shape young children and that is something that I want to be a part of.
Becoming a mental health counselor wasn't an easy decision to come about. Hard to become prior to choosing to be a mental health counselor I have a desire to be a special-education teacher, specialize in working with children on the asperger's spectrum of autism. The reason I decided to choose to change my professional goals was because I thought as a counselor I will be able to work with children on different disabilities and adults on a one-to-one basis. Dream experience as a preschool teacher, many colleges have said that I have a sense of counseling and understanding when dealing with children and people. My previous class prior to this class give me a better understanding of what my goals are and how to reach them. So I truly believe
Mental Health Counselor is the career I have decided to go for. It took me forever and a lot of thinking to decide exactly what I want to do with my life. I have dealt with depression, anxiety, self harming all within myself. I also dealt with watching my father abuse alcohol, and getting cancer and passing. My daughter is ADHD, ODD and suffers with anxiety. I also work in a group home taking care of mentally challenged people. Altogether I've dealt with a lot and I think experiencing everything I have, would make me understand and be a good mental health counselor.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a child, we have all been asked this question; and as unrealistic children, we all had dreams of being a superhero, princess, cowboy, or astronaut. Later on in life, as time went by, and as we became more knowledgeable, our answers became more serious. Some of us wanted to be teachers, business owners, or a veterinarian. However, I have always wanted to be a doctor, but not just any doctor. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pediatrician. Now, half way through my junior year in high school, I have started to question the details of this career, and all the hard work it takes to become a part of the medical field.

It was not until I was in my senior year of college and went through some challenging events in my life that I realized I wanted to be a counselor. The life changing experience I went through was when my beloved childhood friend, Michael, died of Leukemia. He responded very well to a bone marrow transplant, but while recovering he contracted an infection and passed away within a few days. It was inconceivable that someone we loved was taken so early on in life and my family was distraught with grief. During that difficult time, I was taking Abnormal Psychology and learning about death, grieving, and coping. I was very engaged in this topic as I was searching for a way to cope with this major loss and to help my sister work through her grief. My sister and I had many heartfelt discussions on this subject which greatly helped ease our sorrow. Many people feel hopelessness and are struggling everyday with issues both big and small. My life experiences have taught me that not only do I have a strong desire to help others with their struggles; I am capable of making a difference in their lives. This is when I wanted to aspire to become a Mental Health Counselor.

The profession of occupational therapy is holistic, in which the professional can practice in with diverse populations in a variation of settings. The goal of an occupational therapist is to promote, enable, and encourage clients to fulfill occupations independently, such as planning and preparing a meal and balance checkbooks along with properly using a credit card. Since the origination of this career is in mental health, professionals have an imperative role in working with clients with severe mental illness to function daily and increase independence in fulfilling occupations that are meaningful to them.
“The best days are the days that I get to a patient’s home and I am told that he or she has been able to perform a task that in the past was impossible.” -Dr. Tom Wright (“Occupational Therapist”). If helping out people to let them do what they once thought was impossible is something that makes a person feel happy and great, becoming an occupational therapist might be a job he or she would like to consider. Choosing a job is a huge choice in someone’s life, so he or she needs to make many decisions.
When I was little I constantly thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up. Like most kids, I thought of the most unrealistic career paths such as: celebrity, singer, or model. However, I did consider some more realistic careers such as: vet, teacher, and interior designer. While I did not ultimately choose any of these options, I am extremely confident in the profession I am working towards. I one day am hoping to be an Occupational Therapist.
I only felt it fitting in this time of emotional rawness to write you one last letter. I have seen more therapists than i can count since i was seven years old. Most were okay some were pretty good but i never connected with any of them. Then i came to you at one of the hardest points in my life. I was struggling with who i was while the world was telling me who to be. From the very first time i met you, you exuded humanity rather than the cold exterior i had come to expect. I had never connected with another therapist before and it was scary so i pushed you away at first. But over time i told you things i had never told anyone else. In return you showed me that it was okay to take a while to figure out who you are and that being who the world thinks you should be is not any
Imagine if someone's son or daughter got sick and nobody knew what to do with them how would that make someone feel? Many people would love to be a pediatrician or something in the medical field, however some people do not want to put the time and effort into the many years of school. When going to school to be a pediatrician the education that is required is to have a 4 year bachelorette degree, and 4 years of medical school ("Becoming a Pediatrician"). Pediatricians have to be ready to deal with different scenarios when they walk into work every single day. Being a pediatrician requires a Doctorate degree, four years of medical school, and the ability of being comfortable with children.
Somewhere right now, a child is trapped in sadness. They want to tell someone that they have depression, but parents may not understand and friends just pity. Who else can they go to? A child therapist will understand and will give them the help they need. I want to be a child therapist because my freshmen year of highschool I went through a state of depression that led to an unforeseen event in which I needed to help myself and talk myself out of something.
