Adolescence is always a critical moment in the development of every individual. The desire to prove their independence and adulthood, juvenile maximalist provokes a teenager into committing deviant acts, including crimes. The problem with juvenile delinquency is one of the most urgent in modern society since it reaches alarming proportions. Particularly, crimes committed by adolescents with mental diseases occupy a special place among juvenile delinquency. A mental disorder can be a complementary provoking factor leading to juvenile delinquency, which has to be taken into consideration while choosing the appropriate punitive approach.
Personal Opinion
Teenagers suffering from mental illnesses are more susceptible to the influence of external factors. Thus, when they find themselves in an unfavorable environment, they are more likely to commit offenses. As a rule, mental disorder is only one of the common causes of juvenile delinquency, while turbulent social and family relations are at the root of youth crime.

The correlation of mental health and substance use in adolescence is very problematic. Many believe that the relationship between the two are so strong that it plays a causative role in the development of adolescents. It places adolescents at risk for problems within their families, communities, and as an individual. This disease can be severe enough that it impairs the adolescent 's ability to function as a person. Both mental health and substance abuse are entangled within one another, that it makes it difficult to decipher which condition is causing each symptom. However, several research studies concluded that adolescents who suffer from mental illness may self-medicate their symptoms by using drugs. The juvenile justice systems suffer from adolescents with mental health disorders, substance abuse or even both.
The juvenile justice system faces a significant challenge in identifying and responding to the psychiatric disorders of detained youth because research has shown that it is difficult to define the best means to use and enhance the scarce mental health resources (Kessler & Kraus, 2007). The data for this project was collected by administering an anonymous survey to incarcerated juveniles at (name of facility), the (name) receiving center and at the NAACP office in Sacramento, California. The survey asked for gender and parental status (incarcerated versus not incarcerated). Participants were given a paper survey and a pencil to complete the survey. See Appendix for a copy of the survey.
Due to the complexity of the human brain there is an extreme difficulty in being able to scientifically discover all the facts about these disablements. The Atlantic interviewed Dr. Christine Montross, a psychiatrist at Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island about defining Mental Illness. To summarize the interview the conclusion that Montross came too is that mental ailments are extremely delicate issues, there is difficulty in separating an actual problem from something such as temporary depression caused by the human condition.
