The recent tragic events in Tunisia and all too regular mass shootings in the United States provide a stark reminder that we live in an increasingly volatile world. A world where at those times when one should feel most safe and secure, it's all too easy to be suddenly amidst a dangerous and life threatening series of events. It's crucial to understand that sometimes despite best planning, one must always remain alert to the fact that a potentially lethal incident can rapidly - and indeed randomly emerge. Each and every situation is unique both in terms of the potential threat but also of the opportunities to escape and extract oneself from danger. Whether as part of a group who are deliberately targeted, a potential victim of a random act …show more content…
If gunshots are heard react immediately - Look to Escape. Pay attention to where the gunshots sound like they are coming from and move in the opposite direction if possible. Consider that there may be more than one shooter. Move fast, stay low, but do not run. Constantly seek cover and concealment. Do not panic and move with purpose. Always look for alternate emergency route should the shooter/s appear. 2. If escape is not an option then take shelter - HIDE. Find the nearest office, room, closet or hiding place. Try to stay low to the ground and out of sight. Lock and barricade the door with anything available in the room. Look for alternate escape routes (windows, additional doors, etc.). Call the emergency services and provide detailed information. Do not open the door for anyone. Remember most doors and walls will not stop bullets, try to hide behind as many items as possible and stay low. 3. If it's not possible to hide or the shooter is focused on you be prepared to fight for your life. There are numerous items that can be improvised as weapons (chairs, fire extinguishers, etc.) Be prepared to utilize anything close at hand and prepare for the physical encounter. 4. Stay Safe - Stay
“GET DOWN!.... SHHH!!!!.... GET DOWN! GET INTO A ROOM AND LOCK IT!!!!” This is the first thing our opposite crew heard as they walked into the ER with a patient last month. Should this crew have recognized the signs of an active shooter? Is walking into a hospital with an active shooter even a real concern? From 2000-2012, there were 154 hospital related shootings in the United States with 235 injuries or deaths. That’s more than 1 shooting a month. As QIC I will implement parts of the “Active Shooter Preparedness” from United States Homeland Security. Knowing exactly what Emergency Action Plans our hospitals have in place will help us know how to recognize and react to possible active shooter situations. Scene safety is constant with EMS.
The third and last article I've chosen is, Tips to Survive a Mass Shooting. This article explained a number of things such as; understanding different types of shooting. The example they shared was if shootings have been happening in a grocery store and that only a few people have been killed than it's probably because they were being robbed not just killed for the purpose of killing them. However, if it's an "active" shooting zone, than you need to react differently than you would in the first example. You would leave, but if you can't leave you hide, and lastly, if the last aren't options you fight.
As you can see in the news no one is safe and the active shooter is not only one ethnicity, race or religion or how they look. The only way that we can be prepare is on how to respond to the situation. Some individuals act differently under pressure or stress so that can be some of the signs the active shooter can show. Something minor as a road rage or disciplinary action, and personal issues can cause a person to act in hate or retaliation to others. One of the key points is that you have to know your location specially your work center. During our exercises for active shooter we use this 3 tactics which are evacuate, hide out and fight the active shooter as the last resort.
Remaining calm, ensuring safety of all involved, assessing situation, providing assistance/ administering first aid as required and within limits of training, requesting professional support as required and informing them of situation,
You hear sirens after the man hits the floor in agony. When the police find you in the room, holding a gun and a man laying on the floor they are proud of what you did, calling you brave, and commending you on protecting your sister. You are aghast at what has
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recognizes active shooters as a threat to healthcare facilities and encourages them to incorporate planning and preparedness into their emergency operation plans. A guide was developed, and backed by the DHS, FBI, US Department of Justice, and Federal Emergency Management Agency, focused on prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery, as well as stressing the importance of plans
A previously decided upon plan of action is key for responding to an active shooter. This includes instituting a plan for the university as a whole, each department, the specific classes, and the individual professors. I feel that this plan needs to start with every member of the university watching the responding to an active shooter video so that everyone is coming to the situation with the same level of knowledge, tools, and strategies. As a side note, this is something I would like to lobby for within the University of South Carolina, as it will only help and takes just two hours. I think that getting together with one's department to talk with professors about response tactics based on distance
I think A.L.I.C.E is the best option because it gives you all the steps and procedures. I think this can save students and teachers because the steps are all clear. If you alert people and 911 they can respond quickly and could save you. Lockdown youu lockdown and stack all the chairs by the window cause the intruder will not waste his time getting through the stacked stuff. Inform can be helpful if you're still on the phone with the dispatcher and you can tell them where the shooter is. Counter is used if the shooter walks in and you are sitting in class. This is when you pick up things and throw at him and attack. Evacuate this is when the shooter is handled or on the upstairs floor. You run to the closest exit and run till
Over the last decade or so, the United States of America has been shaken by an epidemic of terrifying mass shootings, devastating slayings of unexpecting victims, and unnerving annihilations of the innocent. There is no specific target, no explicitly sought-out group, nor definite individual. From a classroom of first-graders, to a crowded movie theatre, to a U.S. Naval yard, the location seems at most, random, other than that it is almost always a public place. The perpetrators responsible for these horrific murders also vary, and often surprise those who thought they knew them. However, while the occurrences of mass shootings are unpredictable and always shocking, most have one thing in
Officers prepare the community of Dublin for an active shooter. These trainings are held once a year, however, more dates may be adde. The trainings offer different ideas to stay such as run hide, and fight are just some of the techniques taught during a training.
Active shooters have become a major issue today. A shooter will open fire in a public and crowded place like a school, concert, or church. There have been over 200 hundred active shootings since 2017. Being prepared for the unexpected is the best thing an individual can do. Knowing what to do during an active shooter situation is extremely important. A New York Times article said,” It can be chilling to consider, but the more prepared you are, the better your chances of survival” (Hauser). An individual should always look around for exits and know the area or building they are in. While encountering an active shooter if an individual cannot find an exit or make it to one, then they should hide until help arrives. The last thing an individual
I would raise awareness for gun violence in my neighborhood by contacting the government. I never seen so many crimes in my neighborhood that I live in now until I moved back to Greenville,MS. People in my town don't take gun violence serious for the simple fact of they think it's just another day in the hood. Most people in Greenville would like to raise their child in a safe environment rather than worrying about if they send their child to school will they come back. Even schools in Greenville have school shootings.
let's back this story up a bit. It all started one afternoon July 15, 1966 my wife Sarah and my two kids Anna and John had just left for one of the four grocery stores in town and my phone rang I answered “Hello” and talked to a guy named William about two minutes and he hung up on me and I headed to work, I was a detective, my agency was in a town that has 10,000 people in it. This town had a swimming pool that my kids loved to go to.They were great swimmer they were both on the new swim team in town, Anna was in the 10th grade division and she was only in
On October 1, 2017 America was, yet again, devastated when Las Vegas suffered the United States worst mass shooting. One man killed over 50 people and injured 527. After he was finished firing from the 39th floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort, he committed suicide. His name was Stephan Paddock (Yan and Park). When most people think of a mass shooting, they think of a terroristic act or someone shooting at a large group of innocent citizens, like Columbine High School or Sandy Hook Elementary School. In actuality, most people do not realize that whenever two or more people are injured or killed by a gun, it is considered a mass shooting. These “mass shootings” happen every day in America and they are one of the leading causes of death in
You have to do something! OK, lets call the cops first. Good idea. Next, lets get our gun. Thats' right, it is in our gun safe in the closet. We scurry over to the closet as quickly as we can without making any noise. We pull out our gun case and try to remember the combination or try to find the key in the dark so we can open it and get our gun out. Not real easy to do when you are in such a stressful predicament.
