Monuments are built to create a memory of an event or a person. There are many ways that people or events are memorialized. Whether it be through the writing, music, painting, and most common, a monument, people and events are memorialized. Monuments honor great moments and immortalize the memory. These manmade structures are found everywhere across the world. But, before these memorial monuments are made, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. Providing the right sense of commemorating, the material used to create the monument should be taken into consideration. After considering the location and size of the monument, the material should fit the memory or emotion the monument emits. When Maya Lin created the monument for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, the material was the most important to her. I chose black granite in order to make the surface reflective and peaceful” (Source G). Creating the feeling of sorrow, her choice of material helped to create the remembrance of the bravery of those who served for their country. Clearly, there are certain factors that should be taken into consideration when building a memorial. Those three factors are the location, size, and material. The location should be taken into consideration because it should be placed in an area where it will be remembered and honored. The size must be taken into consideration because too small of a memorial will not be noticed and too large of a memorial will be a distraction from the real importance.
