As a reader and writer I have had plenty of courses that made me write essays and research papers, however not as much to read. Writing was always stressed upon in my high school so we tended to write a lot. Reading was also stressed upon, but not as heavy as writing so we didn’t do nearly as much reading as we did writing. The last most intensive writing and reading course I took was my sophomore year theology class. In this particular theology class I was required to read and write more than I ever had before. In theology we studied religion and Jesus’s role or lack thereof in each religion that we covered. Every quarter we were assigned an “Epic Epoch Essay” in which we were required to write a paper on a Jesus related topic chosen by the teacher that increased in length every quarter. Everyone ended up writing a total of twenty-two pages not including the other smaller papers that were assigned. Those papers were my least favorite writing assignments from my entire high school career. On the other hand my favorite writing assignment was one of the requirements for seniors to graduate named, “The Senior Thesis”. I liked this assignment so much because I felt that it had it contained all the properties to prepare me for college. We had to use print sources and a few …show more content…
I like the research because I would always get off topic and start looking other semi-relevant things that would expand my knowledge to some degree. Some people say they like to know a lot about a little, or even a little about a lot, but me, I want to know a lot about a lot and research will help me do that. However, my least favorite part of writing is meeting the requirements of a certain amount of pages or words. I don’t like that because when I am done writing I do not like forcing more into the paper to “fluff” it in order to get the correct
I’ve always loved art. Whether it was displayed in a museum, on television, or even on the side of a building, I’ve had a constant appreciation of art. Although, as much as I love observing art, I do have my own aspiration to create. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the steady hand to paint or draw. I haven’t had the training or experience to be a musician. As for possible being an actor, I’d rather not be the center of attention around strangers.
In reviewing the essay, there are many errors I noticed. Overall, your writing lacks focus in regards to ideas, grammar, and spelling. I am no expert in any of these areas, but my ability to produce a coherent essay is demonstrated by the fact that I am nearly done with college. The goal of my essay is to guide you towards a better way of writing based on my prior experiences. A good essay in my experience is one that has three major components: structure, depth, and voice.
Writing has always been my most difficult part of English. Reading, on the other hand, is something I could do all day; however, with writing, I grimace just thinking about it. It was not that I did not have anything to say, because I actually have quite a bit to say. I just could never figure out how to phrase what I had to say in just right way on the page. My mom taught me to read and write at a young age. After that, I would devour any book that I could get my hands on. However, I have had trouble with writing since it became more than just my alphabet and numbers.
Determining a topic has always been the most arduous task in writing for me. After choosing a direction, I am often able to write my paper with relatively few issues. While choosing a topic, I found it to be important to pick one that has plenty of information available, as well as something that is relevant and something that I thought of as interesting. Writing about something that is unable hold my attention can be difficult and boring. If the topic interests me, it is less of a struggle to write.
An essay is a section of writing that systematically examines and assesses a subject matter or concern. Basically, an essay is intended to get an individual’s educational view on a specific material. The essay can be true-life. Meaning the author of the essay is trying to say the fact, not only amuse you. A decent lengthy essay ought to be made up of an introductory paragraph and visibly state the subject matter to be discussed in the main body. The points should be plainly specified in individual paragraphs and illustrated or warranted. A closing paragraph summarizes the key facts of the paper, in which you repeat your view or give a stable thought of the subject matter. My previous essays were missing some of the material mentioned. For example, I would watch television and try to write an essay or I would limit the amount of words used on my essay paper.
Throughout Honors English II, I not only became a more advanced reader, I also became a more experienced writer. All throughout the semester, I learned to analyze works of literature and look for themes in the novels I read, which also helped me to become a more thoughtful writer. I also greatly improved my vocabulary throughout the semester, which helped me achieve more advanced writing and reading skills. Overall, by using new writing techniques and new vocabulary, I was able to build on my previous reading and writing skills, and I hope to see a continuation of advancement in my reading and writing abilities in the years to come.
I think I’ve done more writing this year than I have in the last 4-5 years combined, perhaps even since high school. I don’t remember any significant writing projects I did K-12 except for a term paper on postpartum depression and some occasional poetry. At this point in my life when I really do need the writing skills, I regret not taking papers seriously or appreciating the art of good written communication. Writing objective papers has not been a problem since the layout is simply good logic and researching reliable information. There isn’t pressure to keep your audience’s attention by painting a mental image to get the reader immersed. Even with this journal entry, I’m not anxious about capturing the reader as these are simply my thoughts as they come to me while I type.
Though not something that I think about often, the way that I write is nonetheless an important part of my life, both as a literate individual in general and a student in particular. Research on the Writing process has been worked on by various authors such as Carol Berkenkotter and Donald Murray, whose works focus on the processes that make up writing, as well as Sondra Perl, whose works talk more about the discernible behaviors of writers (Berekenkotter, Murray and Perl). This paper seeks to generally help me learn as much in particular about my writing process but I will be focusing more on Perl’s work, due to sharing her method of collecting data through her so called “think-aloud protocol”. At present I know little about how I write,
While I’m relatively comfortable and confident in math, the sciences, and in foreign languages, it’s always been the art of writing that’s been my Achilles heel. Throughout high school this has caused me the most concern and self-doubt. My writing skills are adequate but I want more than mediocrity; at Williams, writing well will be central to my success in whatever I choose to study.
Since we were an honors class, they were typically harder and more though-provoking books, such as Ender’s Game and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I don’t think we ever once talked about writing and how to develop our own writing styles, unlike what I experienced in sixth grade. This continued into the next year, too. To this point, I still don’t understand how grammar can be the main curriculum taught throughout two years, but I do know that I strongly disliked that class. I went from having a teacher that encouraged me to write for fun and whatever I wanted, to one that only made writing a priority when we needed to do a project over it. The ONE writing project I remember doing during those two years was a research assignment, in which we were expected to write 10 pages about a topic we researched individually, as eighth graders. By then, I hadn’t written creatively to express myself in a while, so to go straight to a 10-page research paper was hard. I received very harsh feedback from my teacher, with little to no encouraging words. I felt awful after that, of course, because I was use to my writing being so highly
People gain new information everyday they spend on Earth, whether they are aware or not. Students especially, are exposed to new information and ideas daily. What and how students learn varies due to the different subjects requiring a different approach as you tackle those subjects. For example math and chemistry require one to do more written and hands on practice while history and sociology calls for more retainment of materials in the course study. One subject demands something different which makes it stand out is Writing. For Writing you have to use a blend of materials. For examples: personal experiences, general knowledge on topics, practice, and effective research just to name the general few. During this first semester of college Writing 101 has been the class that require the most work from me. Not saying it was hard, which it was not at all. Throughout college you are required to compose many papers for various subjects and with Writing 101 it prepares you for the possible written assignments expected throughout one’s college career. One paper that I enjoyed the most would have to be the exploration and argumentative because it allowed me to discus a topic that I really enjoyed.
My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers, documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. I predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college.
This is the first time I’ve had any formal kind of training/help with my poetry and I can definitely tell there is a change in my writing process. I don’t feel like my overall writing has improved, more like now I know how to properly use it. Usually, I just write down a bunch of words but by having constraints I would never give myself I was able to really stretch my abilities and write some decent stuff that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. I feel like the most useful thing I learned how to utilize stanza structure because I’ve never really given it much thought before. I feel like I also learned to be more expressive in how I write because you pushed me to use more imagery. I used to just write poems exactly how I thought of them which meant there was no grammar and really long lines which I get now aren’t as cool as using a formal structure. This whole class overall really helped to challenge me to make my poems more accessible because I’ve never written a poem that anyone else has read before, so I feel like that’s a good kind of challenge. I really feel like I’ve learned exactly what my style is, because before I either wasn't interested or just didn’t give it much thought. And by learning exactly what my style is I can polish it and really excel.
When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took American History and we would have to write
High school writing was simpler and straight-forward in contrast to college writing because of the formats. College writing format is more detailed and precise. Anytime you go off topic, or fail to state your thesis correctly in a college paper, your entire essay is meaningless. Errors are easily spotted in college essays, which adds on more to the pressure. High school should have taught me and my peers to rely less on what handouts and rubrics they give us, and to focus on developing our own thoughts and critical thinking skills to strengthen our papers to college level papers. The way college stresses the importance of writing papers and the significance of the papers really made me realize how high school ultimately handicapped me in becoming a future skillful college writer.
