My name is James Xue and I am writing to you as your constituent and as an occupational therapist Assistant Student. occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). For nearly a century, occupational therapy practitioners who are regulated health care professionals have been supporting health, well-being and …show more content…
Occupational therapy practitioners work with clients in a wide range of settings with a variety of physical, mental and cognitive conditions that are chronic or episodic in nature. Through assessments, by providing resources, tools and supports, occupational therapy practitioners are able to unleash an individual’s potential, so that he/she can participate and thrive in daily life, in his or her environment, and “manage” the business of “daily functioning and living”.
Serving America’s greying demographic, especially in rural and remote communities is a challenge, that is further exacerbated by inadequate access to occupational therapy services as part of extended health benefits in public and private insurance plans. This situation poses a series of problems such as the inability to provide proactive preventive care that is cost effective and results in positive health outcomes. Benefits of a telehealth service delivery model include increased accessibility of services to clients who live in remote or underserved areas, improved access to providers and specialists otherwise unavailable to clients, prevention of unnecessary delays in receiving care, and workforce enhancement through consultation and research among
To be able to participate in one 's own life, to do the things we want to do, and to competently perform the activities that form part of our daily, weekly or monthly routines, is a common goal for most people. This not only includes taking part in the basic activities of self-care, such as grooming and dressing, but also extends to our work and leisure activities. It is through doing things that we learn and develop as human beings. The occupational therapy profession believes that being prevented or hindered in some way from participating in the activities that are important to us could adversely affect our health and wellbeing.
Introduction Theory has been described as a set of ideas that help us to better understand and explain the concepts behind different behaviours (Tufan & Cole, 2008). As described by Duncan (2009), theories are different ideas that are linked and form the basis for action. (Duncan A.S, E, 2009). In occupational therapy, theories work alongside conceptual models and frames of reference to guide therapists in using the most suitable assessment or therapy for their client (Joosten, V.A, 2015). This essay will discuss the reason theory is used in occupational therapy and how it is implemented in the OT process.
As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, I will work alongside an Occupational Therapist and work directly with patients. The difference between an OT and an OTA is that OT’s set up treatment plans and perform medical assessments while OTA’s carry out the treatment plans with the patients. In volunteering at rehab clinics, I’ve learned that Occupational Therapists often spend much of their time dealing with paperwork while OTA’s are performing more hands on work with people. Their day includes helping patients in performing rehabilitative exercises within a treatment plan. Occupational Therapy Assistants help people to regain their ability to perform activities of daily living, or ADL’s. These are the core aspects which
Occupational Therapy has played a role in helping those with Mental and physical disabilities in the United States since 1917. Before that time, Occupational Therapy was used solely in mental institutions to help people that were "more normal" and able to function in a social status. These patients enjoyed things like arts and crafts. It seemed that those who engaged in such activities where perceived as "more healthy". These findings lead Drs. to encourage patients to engage is such activity to improve there overall health. Occupational therapy has been in the process of continued development since the 1900’s. With several contributors helping to build the groundwork for creating the awareness needed to bring occupational therapy into the field of health care. Continued research is contributing to the ongoing significance of how occupational therapy is a vital aspect in promoting increased independences in all aspects of healthcare. (Willard, Schell, 2014) With the incorporation of “Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Process (3rd ed.)” helps creates the foundation for occupational therapy clinicians as well as other health care providers in facilitating the core believe of occupational and the relationship of health and occupation. (AOTA 2014) Therefore, providing a uniform outline of the various aspects of each individual and how they are interconnected to create the foundation of each individual. With a greater understanding of the foundations of that induvial, the clinician can then facilitate the best therapeutic treatment plan for that individual to achieve their personal goals with unified foundations of care.
Becoming an Occupational Therapist is a goal that I have been working hard to achieve my whole life and know it’s a field that I will be highly successful in. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to work in a field that helped people. I have dedicated my life to achieving this dream. I have given up breaks from school to observe therapists or to volunteer at Equestrian Zone, a facility that provides hippotherapy and therapeutic riding. I first learned about occupational therapy through a family I was close to growing up who has a daughter with Rett Syndrome.

Children with many different disabilities need the intervention of an occupational therapist; therefore, occupational therapists work in the school systems. Elderly people often begin to lose their physical ability to do certain tasks, so there are occupational therapists working in nursing homes or providing in home care. Many athletes suffer sports injuries that cause them to lose their ability to do daily activities, and occupational therapists are available to them in rehabilitation centers and hospitals. These are just a few of the many scenarios where occupational therapists are available; they can also work in orthopedic centers, colleges, mental health settings, and drug and alcohol settings (Hoffman & Harris, 2000, p. 405). Due to the fact that occupational therapists can often specialize to a certain type of patient, it may be helpful to hold a job in college where one could learn how to work with that group of people. For instance, if a prospective occupational therapy student wants to work in a preschool for students with special needs after they graduate then it may be beneficial to hold a job as an assistant preschool teacher. Similarly, if the goal of an occupational therapy student is to provide their service to elderly people then training and working as a CNA would provide both useful experience and medial

I am passionate about Occupational Therapy as a dynamic and impactful profession. The integration of therapeutic principles with a holistic approach is what truly captivates me. My drive stems from the desire to translate strategic plans into tangible outcomes, facilitating improved quality of life for individuals and aiding in the restoration of their confidence and abilities. Witnessing the transformative impact of Occupational Therapists' work as my mother currently receives support due to her mental illness has left a profound impression on me. Observing her remarkable progress, both mentally and physically, fuelled my determination to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy.
If you were to walk around a college campus and randomly ask students what they were going to do with their lives you would most likely be answered with tears, confused looks, and some near breakdowns. Luckily for me I’ve always known that I’ve wanted to become an Occupational Therapist.
Way back when I first started college, my priorities were not clear. I knew I wanted to do something that I can be proud of, it was only a matter of what do I really want that will fill my life and complete me as a person. I was in the manufacturing field since I was 19 years old and yet, I felt a hole in my heart. I got to a point where I stop growing as an individual and it became apparent that I wanted to do something more significant. That void became the fuel to pursue something bigger and life changing. I tried to dig deep and really tried to figure out what I want in life and at the same time I started taking classes that can go towards any degree in the medical field. Taking care of people has always been a part of me. I took care of
The use of Occupational Therapy in Low Vision Rehabilitation Patients with low vision impairment from macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, can have major difficulties to complete daily tasks. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 28 adults over the age of 40 in the United States have low vision, a number that is expected to increase significantly over the next 20 years due to an aging population. Approximately 2/3 of older adults with vision impairment live alone in their own homes. There are several ways an occupational therapist helps people with low vision to function at the highest possible level. (3)
An occupational therapist is a trained and licensed health care professional who can make a complete evaluation of the impact of disease on the activities of the patient at home and in work situations. Hobbies and recreational activities are considered when an assessment is made. The most generally accepted definition of occupational therapy is that it is an activity, physical or mental, that aids in a patient’s recovery from disease or injury.
Participation is an important piece in the field of occupational therapy. Given that different factors influence participation and when people have a choice in the activity, it increases participation, then the more someone actively participates in occupational therapy, the better their outcome of therapy will be. In her piece, Participation in the Occupations of Everyday Life, Mary Law focuses on this idea that participation in meaningful activity is key to effective occupational therapy. I may not be old and experienced but, I am old enough to be able to relate the information in this article to my life.
