Racial injustice is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Recent publicized events have caused national outcry of the police brutality that African-American’s face everyday. In fact, in the black community, “the talk” is more about how to handle yourself when approached by a police officer then about the birds and the bees. Stereotypes about people of color keep them from equal education, employment, and fair treatment when simply shopping in a grocery store. Furthermore, people assume if you are not following the stereotype then you are not “black enough”. Growing up I was a product of this “not black enough” stigma. As publicized in the media that idea that African-American people are dangerous criminals, even while unarmed, confirms a police officers right to use deadly force. Stereotypes based on someone's name encourage discrimination in hiring practices. The lack of political participation in the black community because of voting rights violations or lack of education of the political process keeps black people from exercising their basic right to vote. As an African-American female, both a witness and victim to the racial injustices of America and as a future attorney, It is my dream to be apart of the pursuit of racial justice. During the Civil Rights Era many of the accomplishments for racial equality came from litigation inside a courtroom. Although I believe that spreading knowledge has a powerful impact on solving some of the issues, I know that the real war is fought and won in the courtroom. In 1954 Brown v. Board of Education desegregated schools, the 1964 Civil Rights Act that struck down discrimination in schools, employment, and public places, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that outlawed discriminatory voting practices have all been wins for racial justice inside a
