Standing inside a semi-frozen Russian greenhouse, four biologists are watching their country die around them. Magnolia, Quincy, Abha and Gaidar are living and working in Irkutsk, Russia as biologists. They moved into their greenhouse, with their most precious belongings, after starting a project together. The four biologists met in their university years at Moscow State University and believed they were going to change the world. The project is that they are studying and trying to repopulate a very rare species of tree, the Nasczokin's Lime tree. However, these magnificent plans came to a sudden stop. “I agree that we have to do something, but be rational, we can’t go out into all that ice and snow!”
A dreadful silence comes over the group “Centuries of a powerful government have simply vanished.” He says, staring at a picture of the government’s building hanging on the wall.
Abha simply says, “ The government can easily be rebuilt, but what about our religious background?” By now she was pointing to a photo of a the Russian Cathedral, St. Basil’s Cathedral. “This Cathedral has survived two world wars, and now it’s gone. Our religion provided hope and now any physical remembrance of it is gone.”
“Well, the social classes made the country what it was, the professions of Russia! I did a project on that once, now children will never learn the way I did.” Magnolia states in a melancholy tone. She rummages through the storage closet to find her crumpled, outdated collage from the fifth grade.
“We couldn’t even communicate without a writing system though.” adds Gaidar.
Magnolia, Quincy, Abha, and Gaidar continue to discuss the most important parts of Russian society that they believe would be most crucial in rebuilding the now annihilated country. They mean for this to be a peaceful discussion, but everyone has a different view, and it has dissolved into a less that civil conversation.
