After Piggy's death the boys on the island could not be more divided. The boys had split into two groups, Jack and his tribe and Ralph who is now alone due to Piggy's death. “Dark, darker my light, and darker my desire,” (Stanza 3), as said by Roethke. The boys are only falling into deeper chaos on the island, and are continuing to become more savage. Jack’s desires, in particular, are becoming darker because he proceeds to throw spears and hunt down Ralph after he had witnessed Piggy's death. This is a great representation of how the boys are becoming more barbaric with the actions that they are taking. At first the boys desires were to get rescued. However, now Jack is coming to the realization that they will probably not be rescued and he wants to hunt down and kill Ralph. Jack starts reinstating to the boys on the island that he is their leader.

The author, William Golding, writes an intelligent and moral character in Piggy but from the very beginning, Piggy was unappreciated, “ ‘I expect we’ll want to know all their names,’ said the fat boy, ‘and make a list. Piggy possesses many important qualities one would expect a great leader to have; he seems to be their best chance of building a civilized society and returning home. Ralph, one of the main characters, was initially the leader, but a boy named Jack came along, and took over the group of boys and the madness began. When Jack took over, Ralph was pushed over to Piggy’s side, Piggy is a slightly overweight boy, and is often teased by the surrounding boys, including Ralph. “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy.” (Golding 202). In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, he tells a story about a group of boys survived on an island. “Lord of the Flies” shows that when there is no civilization, humans resist to their initial evil self. In the beginning the children are stranded on an island and are completely alone with no one to guide them. At first they seem very innocent but as the story proceeds it is shown that the children have converted to complete savageness. The thoughts and actions of three characters, Ralph, Simon and Jack reflect that humanity is a selfish and brutal specie. Firstly, Ralph is, for the most part, a decent gentleman, the type that most individuals are normally attracted to because of his great looks and capacity to lead.

When they first arrive at the island, Jack and the rest of the boys wears the same mask of innocence as every other human being, but it soon begins to slip. Initially, the boys try to set up an island society that mimics the English society, with discipline and authority. The children want to have familiar rules. Piggy says, “We’ll have rules!” he cried excitedly. “Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks ‘em--” (Golding 25). Everyone follows the rules in the beginning, hoping that it will lead their rescue. But when their hopes dwindle, they soon fall out of order, becoming two independent and opposed groups.
