Teens end up getting bad grades in their beginning classes because of lack of sleep. School start times should be no earlier than 8:00 because not enough sleep can lead to negative impacts at school, it leaves teens sleep deprived, and it can lead to brain damage. Still, young people who don't get enough sleep get negatively affected at school. According to Sleep Foundation, 15% of teenagers fall asleep during school. It says he became, “groggy, forgetful, and clumsy.” Students do have some of those symptoms during the day. World of Labor says that when teens don't get enough sleep their achievements, grades, and test scores go down. It might not affect them right away but once again it may affect them long term by over months of not getting enough sleep students may not grow correctly. First there are many serious risks of being sleep deprived. Since so many teenagers are dealing with stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep, if they do this for too long it can have a major affect on their health. The third leading cause of death between the ages of fifteen to twenty-four is suicide. Dealing with sleep deprivation is a major risk factor for having suicidal thoughts, whether or not the teen is depressed. Sleep is food for the brain, without it, it can take a major toll on people. Studies have shown that those who go to bed late do worse in school, and experience a harder time controlling their emotions. Lack of sleep can also affect teens in the long run; causing them to have a higher risk of obesity and diabetes. Sleep deprivation is very harmful to teens, their body needs sleep to function properly, without it, it can damage certain things. Dr. Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, said “[Sleep deprivation] is extremely detrimental at all stages of life, In the teen years, when development continues the sleep deprivation effects of brain and body development are significant,” (Breus). Again, sleep deprivation can lead to lots of negative mental and physical health issues. Npr.org says, “Teenagers are getting six to seven hours of sleep a night, and they need eight to ten.” Because most students do not become tired until around eleven or midnight, they are unable to get the right amount of sleep because the school start times are so early (wol.iza.org).
Sleep deprivation leads to serious consequences for academic achievement. Teens who get more sleep are proven to do better. Considering 59% of eighth graders get less than the recommended sleep time, that is not good. According to a psychologist named James Mass, a leading sleep expert “ 95% of teenagers are like walking zombies.” Kids are not going to do their best in school if they are half asleep. Sleep enhances learning, creativity, helps fight infections, fuel growth and balance mood. Without being able to have those abilities students will not be as creative or engaged as they would if they got the recommended sleep time for their age. So to have better academic achievement middle school start times need be later.
Serious health issues like depression could be caused if a teen doesn’t get enough sleep, but with homework to do, essays to write, and exams to study for, it is hard to get a good night’s rest. A later starting time for school could significantly help. O’Neill says, “Studies show that tired teens have an increased risk of depression, anxiety, obesity, and illness,” (O’Neill 20). From this quote, it is evident that many health conditions could arise from not getting enough sleep. However, not only mental problems can develop.
Teenagers who start school earlier have more health problems due to lack of sleep. Some students in school work or have extracurricular activities after school therefore sleeping earlier is not an option. Teenagers who don’t get enough sleep usually turn to drug and alcohol abuse. If students got more time to sleep it would give the human brain time to function properly. Students would have more respect for teachers and assignments.
Once these students do everything they need to do for the day it usually is around ten thirty at night and by going to bed that late and then waking up so early they only receive around seven hours a sleep a night. Even though extracurricular activities may get in the way of scheduling, one should support later school start times because teens would not be sleep deprived, melatonin levels can balance, and teens will have higher concentration levels throughout the day.
Districts should be for school day to start later than usual. Because it can improve in school’s performance, decreases the chances of teens to be involved in car crashes, and because teenagers need at least 8.5 hours of sleep.A later start time could actually save schools money and benefit society at large.
13-15 year olds at our school need nine to nine and a half hours of sleep. Once again, homework and after school activities make us so we cannot go to bed at 8:00 with completed school work. The studies have been done, and they say that teens who aren't getting enough sleep are more prone to poor grades. Poor grades aren't the only thing though. Teens with not enough sleep are also prone to engaging in dangerous behaviors such as drinking, alcohol use, drug use, smoking, ect.
