SeaWorld Abuse
Many of you have heard about the accusations of SeaWorld mistreating animals. The People from the Ethical Treatment of Animals have launched another attack against SeaWorld with claims that one of the organization’s veterinarians’, Dr. Heather Rally, found multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act at SeaWorld in San Antonio.
Some things we know:
Because of these accusations, the parks have seen its attendance and stock prices drop. SeaWorld has always been known for loving their animals and being able to showcase them and let people from all around the world see what they are able to do. The documentary Blackfish showed deaths of SeaWorld trainers, and it mainly highlights them working with an aggressive whale. Dr. Rally

It was also noted that some orcas had rake marks, scars caused by aggressive whales. The thing to realize is that none of these facilities that are caring for these animals are purposefully mistreating animals, so when they do find problems that have occurred, they will put in procedures to make sure that it doesn’t occur again or to minimize the risk of it happening again.
Dental Issues:
The veterinarian saw both orcas and sea lions being mistreated. She said the orcas had severe dental issues, probably from biting on their enclosures or grinding their teeth. According to the guardian, “when you take orcas and dolphins, who are highly intelligent, very emotional, far-ranging creatures and you put them in a concrete tank often with animals they’re not comfortable with, it causes stress and causes boredom and the results of that is the development of abnormal behaviors.”.
Dorsal fins on the Orcas: Rally also noticed that 100% the male orcas had collapsed dorsal fins, something that rarely happens in the wild. It is most likely not to happen in the wild because the motion of diving deep into the water keeps the fin straight until it solidifies. Having a collapsed fin does not have any negative health
Studies have been shown that Orcas lead a highly more elaborate life than any other mammal. So already being stripped from it's mother is a traumatizing experience, being tortured by other Orcas, and put in a pool when it swims more than 100 miles each day can lead to this inner aggression that it can't vent out
Since its establishment in 1964 the world famous franchise SeaWorld has been subjected to various tabloid headlines and legal investigations following the horrendous attacks by orcas, also known by their more apt name ‘Killer Whales’. These incident range from minor to major, but, there has been rare cases of fatalities from the family orientated marine parks based in America.
Since SeaWorld opened in 1964, the park has encountered harsh criticism from the public. Whether criticized for their ethics or their oblivious harm to animals, the underwater amusement park raises many ethical questions regarding the captivity of sea animals, especially orcas. Most people are uninformed about orcas to begin with, so they do not understand why SeaWorld is such a terrible place. SeaWorld exploits animals in their shows to bring revenue to their company, while disregarding the physical and mental health of the animals. Today, people have begun to see the reasons why SeaWorld should close. SeaWorld should close their doors due to their record of unhealthy orcas, their aggressive killer whale, Tilikum, and their dishonesty to the public.
Many of the orcas being held in captivity have many problems varying from dental problems, depression, and general health. First, almost every whale being held in captivity has a collapsed dorsal fin. The collapsed dorsal fin is very rare in the wild, only 2-5% of whales have it. Its mostly caused by depression and what food the whales are consuming. The whales at SeaWorld are given antidepressants before each show because of how depressed they are. They have no freedom to roam the ocean and swim freely with their families. The orcas seem to know that there are bigger waters than the pool they swim in because they try to get out. The sides of the whale’ bodies are scratched up and their teeth are all worn down, “resulting in painful dental drilling without anesthesia”(“8 Reasons Orcas Don 't Belong at SeaWorld”). They want and try to get out. Because they chew on the pool’s wall, their teeth begins to gradually chip away, and since they bite and chew the wall, they do swallow the plaster. For humans, its like eating plastic and it would be hard to consume. The only way to clear up the whales’
And third, we are announcing a partnership with the Humane Society of the United States focusing on ocean health and the protection of fish and marine mammals.” (Fair Disclosure Wire.) This source is credible because the speakers are direct advocates of SeaWorld. Also they are have a lot of experience in the animal care field therefore defending their stakeholder position. One limitation of this is the bias toward SeaWorld and their defense of their alleged animal abuse.
The corporate officials of SeaWorld used facts to convince viewers to believe their credibility instead of those of BlackFish by different logistic angles such as their many years of being in business. They stated in the website that in the more than fifty years SeaWorld has been in business, they have built a diversified portfolio of 11 destination and regional theme parks which proves they are a well-rounded corporation. They inform the viewer that their programs and practices are based solely on the wellbeing of the animals; “Our advanced programming applies a broad range of best practices based upon behavioral enrichment, preventive health, veterinary medicine and facilities design and management. Our programs and policies are affirmed by numerous federal and state laws, including the Animal Welfare Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and other statuses”(SeaWorld Website). They make it their priority to accommodate environmental, social and economic sustainability across the company and throughout their employee culture, which is a huge part of having a thriving business. With this aspect of the business, they show that they are reliable and a trustworthy corporation. They state in the website how they have over 21,000 team members nationwide, which appeals to how the crew members are treated across the country, otherwise they wouldn’t have any employees. They make many
Another reason why orcas shouldn’t be in places like SeaWorld is because the habitat is bad and small for them. One example is that often the orcas get bored when they are in captivity and start to chip of the paint on the side of their enclosure’s walls. This then ruins their teeth, which then means regular dental check-ups. (B) In a way, orcas are similar to humans because they get bored. When whales are in the wild they can swim freely and for as long as they want. This shows that they aren’t as active as in the wild. For example, often there are dominant females and sometimes those dominant females can get violent. They get so violent that they start to hurt other whales. According to article Killer Whales Should Not Be Kept in Captivity,”
The documentary, Blackfish, proves that there was and still is quite a bit of controversy over whether it is ethical to keep Orcas in captivity. Some people believe that it is acceptable since the Orcas are being treated and fed well. Other people, however, believe that this is not ethical because being kept in a tank for twenty years leads to aggression and therefore is too dangerous for humans. The documentary proves that there are many incidents, in the past, where a whale has harmed their trainer. One example of this, that made people more aware of the danger, was the death of Dawn Brancheau in 2010 (Cowperthwaite & Oteyza, 2013). The incidence has led to many different debates over the years and Sea World has had to try to refute the claims that were made about them. The claims were regarding their treatment of the whales and other issues. However, Sea World was not
Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.
SeaWorld is a United States based park with live aquatic animals. SeaWorld has been under some scrutiny lately with the treatment of their Orcas as well as their living conditions. Some people believe what SeaWorld is doing is okay whereas others do not. Some think keeping animals in captivity is acceptable, and others think taking them away from their families is uncalled for. Washington Post believes what SeaWorld doing is perfectly acceptable. PBS a typically children’s network is completely for SeaWorld and keeping animals in captivity. SeaWorld is strongly debated on keeping animals in captivity, their living conditions, and taking orcas away from their families.
Orcas in captivity suffer from more than just physical imperfections. Dosed with drugs to help the killer whales deal with stress, they suffer terribly in marine parks. Animals and humans share the same immune system. Just as stress reduces our immune system, it does the same to the killer whale. Therefore, stress has been an indirect cause of death in captive killer whales. Killer whales in captivity experiencing stress tend to beat their head against the walls of their tanks until it bleeds. At least three captive whales have killed themselves with this repetitive motion brought on by stress. Have you ever heard of this happening in the wild? Not only does it not happen, an Orca in the wild would never bring bodily harm upon itself. Denial of their right to live in their true habitat where they belong causes the killer whales much stress, frustration, anxiety, and sadly aggression. In the wild Orcas, do not attack humans as they have in marine parks. As Barry (2010, Para, 12) explained, "Isolation among marine animals is highly stressful, which leads to abnormal behavior." Marine parks such as Sea World have what they call petting pods, where the children can pet and feed the Orcas. Orcas are given tranquilizers to help them deal with the stress and anxiety of human contact. People might not be so eager to pet these wild mammals if they knew everything the Orca had to go through just so they
And SeaWorld has the best staff of animal care experts and their collective knowledge. As mentioned on the Why Condemning SeaWorld Is A Really Bad Idea article. The problem with these kinds of documentaries is that it is designed to play on emotions, not reason. The psychology of human beings plays a role in displaying an issue we're not only our brains make us prefer one point of view on others, and makes it unfair to the
Imagine a place where you can see your favorite sea animals. Whales, dolphins, sharks, even penguins. Doesn’t that sound like somewhere you would enjoy going? SeaWorld is what comes to most people’s minds when they think of this, but is SeaWorld really that wonderful? Is SeaWorld truly what it’s hyped up to be? SeaWorld claims to be a sanctuary for animals where they keep animals like killer whales safe from the dangers of the world. Well, SeaWorld should really get a dictionary because a “sanctuary” is truly not what they give these animals. Orcas are the main attraction of SeaWorld but they are also one of the animals that suffer the most. Orcas in SeaWorld lifelessly float in their pool with little to no shade from the sun. In the wild,
If you have ever been to Seaworld you would have had to go see the Killer whales in fact its one of the top attractions there. Through the eyes of a child, these gentle giants seem to be happy, healthy, and enjoying a playful game with their trainers. The question is are they really happy, do they get treated the right way, and why have there been deaths and injuries. Many people wonder about these things and after the movie Blackfish came out more and more people began to question how well Seaworld treats their animals. “The truth is that Sea World keeps its animals for entertainment and money and helps no one but themselves.”- Animal Legal Defense Fund
SeaWorld’s customer base was the audience. This film’s intended purpose was to get the general public to see how SeaWorld treats their orcas and the amount of attacks that there have been by orcas. The makers of the documentary seemed to have wanted to get the general public to boycott SeaWorld because of how SeaWorld has treated its animals and trainers. A problem with this is that the documentary didn’t provide the other side of the story of SeaWorld. If you go to their website they explain about their conservation efforts.
