South Florida’s ascendancy to the epicenter of the cruise industry began long before the modern cruise lines were born. Early in the twentieth century, a group of daring visionaries and entrepreneurs began to dream of expanding the local business community and creating new industries to take advantage of Florida’s climate with its sunshine and warmth. Chief among these businesses they envisioned a winter tourism trade but to realize this dream they would require a strong transportation infrastructure.
The coastal shipping trade along the United States’ East Coast helped to bring the first visitors to Florida spurred on by the growing railroad empires developed by Henry Flagler and Henry B. Plant. By the 1890s, these railroad tycoons

Then in 1913, the Plant Line, now owned by Flagler’s Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company (P&O), decided to send its new 3,786-ton steamer the ss Evangeline on winter pleasure cruises. But, instead of sailing from the new ports, she cruised from Key West calling at Panama, Jamaica, and Cuba. The following winter the cruises were repeated but this time sailing from Jacksonville. All the remained was to link these new cruise efforts with the emerging South Florida ports.
After World War I, a flourishing trade developed with steamers such as the 1,700 gross ton ss City of Miami and the 3,200 gross ton ss Northland, maintaining overnight runs between Miami and Havana. However, sensing that the ports still lacked a proper infrastructure to maintain the shipping industry, the first of many efforts began to improve the facilities. In Miami, a US$3 million project was undertaken in 1925 to dredge and widen the channel. Similarly, to the north, the Mayor of Hollywood was the driving force for a US$6 million project to deepen the harbor inlet, widen the turning basin and build modern 35-foot piers at Bay Mable. Completed early in 1928, it is said that more than 85 percent of the residents of Broward County turned out to witness the dedication of their new port. At the same time, local women’s groups led successful efforts to replace the unpopular Bay Mable Harbor name which what they thought would be a
We have now begun on our journey to South Carolina. I can’t wait to arrive, though I am worried about the travel there. When we first set out, father spoke with James, Elizabeth, and I. He finally thought it was time to tell us about Lexington and Concord, I don’t think he knows I know so much about it already. Though he told us some things I was not aware of. He said that, even though the colonists lost so many men they still considered the battle a victory. This confused and surprised me, they thought this because they took a stand and upset King George the third. And turns out that these two battles had started a revolutionary war! So the colonist are currently fighting for there freedom from the British. I hope the colonists win this war,
The City of Tampa, FL, is a growing city that is known for its opportunities and has a diversity of ethnicities. Meaning that people can come from anywhere and live a life they want to. However, the City of Tampa, FL, has violated the citizens of Tampa, by taking away culture and traditions in communities. These owners have put in a great deal of time and hard work keeping their property up, as well as keeping their tradition and culture. It isn't fair that generation of ancestors work hard for their family businesses, churches, homes and schools to be taken away by the Government; therefore, I believe the people should have the opportunity to prove they can afford their property and they should be allowed their culture and traditions.
city we now know as Miami spun off of Key West. In 1871, the arrival of the Cuban San
Summary: The cruise line industry has been experiencing a period of massive expansion over the last decade thus heightening the competitive profile for the industry in terms of market share and competitive rivalry. Now cruise industry is one of the most competitive across all.
The British were so worried about pirate attacks that they had to call a militia to assure safety. Around 1776 about 7 years before the British rule was over, West Florida was bigger than East Florida. West Florida had extended to Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana. This was also a major problem because they had problems increasing migration of the Indians into the region. Mostly because Farmers would endanger the fur trade with the
Carnival is “The World’s Most Popular Cruise Line” with 24 “Fun Ships” operating voyages ranging from three to 16 days in length to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, New England, Europe, and Bermuda. Carnival’s success is attributed to its marketing program directed towards
Groundwater is the largest and most available usable source of drinking water in the state. There is a vast and mysterious system of caves and natural springs in North Central Florida. The cave system within the aquifer is one of the most amazing parts. The caves are remarkable in many ways. They are among the deepest and longest in the world, let alone the U.S. Another amazing aspect of the system is the purity of the water. The springs collectively produce billions of gallons of crystal clear water per day. The whole system stems from the Florida Aquifer that rests under the entire state. When most people think of Florida, they think of the weather and the beaches, but its the springs and the whole water
Soon communities were being established along Biscayne Bay and many of the new residents were influential pioneers. Henry M. Flagler who became a multi-millionaire from his partnership with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil, extended his railroad south along Florida’s east coast, and developed cities and resorts along the way. Flagler’s railway entered West Palm Beach in 1894. In the following year, two freezes caused extreme damage to the crops in Florida but luckily didn’t reach Miami. These freezes resulted in Flagler meeting with Julia Tuttle, who purchased Fort Dallas in 1891, and making a deal to extend his railway down to Miami in exchange for hundreds of acres of pristine land. Flagler also agreed to establish the building blocks for a city on both sides of the Miami River by building a hotel near the river. The first train entered Miami on April 13, 1896. By then a city was growing on both sides of the Miami River. Back then Avenue D, which is today’s Miami Avenue, was the center of the community. By 1896, banks, stores, churches, and other indications of a developing and thriving community were popping up all over the
Flagler first saw St. Augustine with his second wife, and when he visited, he saw it as a new opportunity. He wanted to make it a “resort for the wealthy,” or a “winter playground for the rich.” He developed Hotels, churches, hospitals, neighborhoods, and railroads. He developed the Florida East Coast Railroad down the peninsula, in and across the Florida Keys, building hotels, neighborhoods, and communities along the way. He then expanded the eastern boundary of Lincolnville to the Ponce de Leon Barracks. He died in 1913 at 93 years of age and is buried with his wife, daughter, and granddaughter at St. Augustine.
Get ready to live on boats! The coast is almost gone. Despite Louisiana’s Gulf Coast being such a critical piece to its survival, economy, and culture, the coast is disappearing at alarming rates. The state loses, on average, 25,000 acres per year, which is equal to one football field every 15 minutes. As a result of human actions on Louisiana’s coast, it is disappearing at massive rates and there’s no way for the coast to naturally replenish like it could previously.
Stanley Turkel, in Henry Morrison Flagler: The Man Who Invented Florida, discusses the earliest and perhaps the most significant of Florida’s early developers, was Henry Morrison Flagler, who invented the concept of the Florida vacation as we know it today. Modern railroads had been built only as far south as Savannah, Georgia, and rail travel farther south into Florida was uncertain and dangerous. When the state government offered Flagler’s privately owned Florida East Coast Railway a grant of 8,000 acres of land per railroad mile, he pushed his line farther south.
Carnival has 75 ships in its fleet and is continuing to brand the company as the “fun ships”
In 1972, Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) was found by entrepreneur Ted Arison. Mr. Arison’s vision involved making cruising, a vacation experience once reserved for the rich, available to the all individuals. Carinal Cruise Lines achieved the ability to carry more passengers than any other cruise line, which lead to Carnival becoming the largest cruise line in the world. By 1987, Carnival Cruise Lines earned the distinction, “The Most Popular Cruise Line in the World.”
At the end of the 1960’s, Wilhelmsen and Stephan came up with the profitable idea that the wealthy residents of Florida will consider paying top dollar amounts to cruise to the Caribbean Islands as a great alternative for a week or weekend getaway. After proposing this idea to Norwegian entrepreneurs, Royal Caribbean Cruise lines, was born.
In 1822, the very first cruise line, known as the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company, was founded by Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson, both experienced in the shipping industry. Its first ship was the 206 ton paddle steamer called the William Fawcett, which was first deployed in 1835 from London to Spain and Portugal. More recently, in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, three of the world’s largest cruise lines were established. The first one, Norwegian Cruise Line, was introduced when airline travel was becoming increasingly popular. The cruise industry declined significantly from this competition. The second cruise line, Royal Caribbean International, was also experiencing the same challenges as
