Less Testing, More Learning

The best possible education is crucial to a growing society. Unfortunately, students in the United States have been continuosly bogged down by an outrageous amount of standardized testing with assessments such as MCAS, Parcc, and the infamous SAT. Education should be completely focused on constantly engaging students by making kids critically think, not by sitting kids in a room, and teaching them how to fill in bubbles for multiple choice standardized tests. Barack Obama’s amendment to the already passed No Child Left Behind Bill was not necessary because the Every Student Succeeds Act did not do enough to eliminate teacher’s- teaching to a test- and standardized testing.

Barack Obama’s Every Student Succeeds Act claims to be the end of standardized testing punishing schools, but the bill does nothing to amend standardized testing policies for the better, or eliminate them completely, “As the president of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, has put it, "high-stakes testing will no longer be the be-all and end-all of our kids' education”’(https://www.edutopia.org). If the United States is going to no longer let test scores punish schools, as a nation we should eliminate them completely. It would be best for all schools to focus on creating engaging curriculums that result in students getting involved and critically thinking. Schools need to do away with forcing staff to teach to a test, so test scores match up with student’s grades, and focus more on creating an inspiring learning place with good student and staff relationships. I really do not think Barack Obama’s billy was necessary, because it has not taken any steps forward in amending or eliminating standardized test scores. As an aspiring English teacher, I would like to see standardized tests eliminated. Teaching to a test takes away all the passion in the job, I want to get kids to be able to critically think about why Willy Loman committed suicide for his kids- not teach them how to fill out multiple choice
