In the film 'V for Vendetta' directed by James Mc Teique an important technique used is symbolism. We could see examples of symbolism in V's mask, the letter V and roses. Symbolism was an important part of the movie because they help to represent the main ideas of the movie which are unity, oppression and revenge. The most common symbol used in the movie was V's mask which was modeled after Guy Fawkes, who attempted to blow up the parliament in the fifth of November. Throughout the movie, the character V always hides behind his mask and the director never reveals his true identity. Mc Teique also uses lighting to expand on the idea of oppression. We see V and Evey in their homes in warm light which represents a calm and friendly atmosphere. However in the outside world, only dark and grey colours are used which created a sad and frightening atmosphere. This could link to Norsefire's symbol, where the colours of black and red are used. Black represents the dark activities of the government and red represents blood and wildness. Mc Teique also uses allusion to relate Norsefire to Nazis, throughout the movie we see that they have very similar beliefs and goals. Adam Sutler reminds us of Hitler in many ways, such as the alliteration of 'tl' in their name and the anger and dominance shown in Sutler's face. Another similarity could be Larkhill, the place where the government tested viruses on their people, same as Nazis as they had a camp like this during WW2. These similarities show how cruel and oppressive the government is. Therefore Mc Teique set the idea for oppression by making that background. V is the main starter of rebellion. The letter V is a common symbol that we see in the movie quite often. It's the symbol of character V and as the movie progresses we see it more often. We see people believing in the symbol of V, as even a six year old girl paints it on the walls, therefore rebellion gets stronger and as V said 'When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty'. People use and follow V's symbol
