One of the most significant happenings that the Birth Control Movement was responsible for was the creation of the birth control pill. In 1948, Margaret Sanger, biologist Gregory Pincus and physician John Rock began to research and develop the birth control pill. It got approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1960 (Kaufman). This oral contraception is a type of medication that women take daily to prevent pregnancy because these pills contain hormone that prevent a woman’s eggs from leaving the ovaries and making cervical mucus thicker which keeps the sperm from getting to the eggs (Planned Parenthood). The biggest one would be the strong opposition against the movement especially the religious aspect of it. Those who are anti-birth control says that birth control is immoral and goes against God’s law that women were made to bear children. They also argue that the use of birth control by the upper and middle classes was harming society by reducing the population those desirable traits. Abortion is an even bigger issue that is even considered its own issue because of the controversy it brings. There is constant attack by these protestors which initially slowed the movement by getting the advocates arrested and now have any future legislative decisions made in worry of offending and targeting half of the nation. One example of the high level of opposition effecting the movement was President Bush’s legislation in 2003 to make a criminal offense for women to have an abortion even if her health is endanger. This was the first move against abortion after the Roe v. Wade ruling (Planned Parenthood). Conservative minds like Bush causes a step-back in the movement. Another weakness to the birth control movement is that birth control can be expensive. This makes it difficult for women who cannot afford birth control to have protective sex. There are other contraceptive methods such as a condom, but those can break leading to pregnancy. This is especially the case for teenagers and college
