Setting plays a major role in a story. It doesn’t matter if the setting is a futuristic city or an intense battlefield in the middle of a war, the setting presents the reader with imagery and can shape the plot. If there is one book that showcases my point, look no farther than To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel that tells a story through a memorable setting. The setting of the book takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in the early 1930s. During that time, the south was a rough place to live in due to the Depression. The story depends on the setting to help the reader understand the plot. The characters use slang words and talk differently, the book describes the lives of people living in Maycomb, and the story shows the behavior of …show more content…
In Maycomb, the people in the town live differently than the rest. There’s the Radley’s who like to stay inside, there are the Ewell’s who live poorly, and there is Miss Maudie who loves the outdoors. These are examples of people who all live very differently. The black community is very poor, mostly illiterate, and have few rights which shows the reader a time before the Civil Rights Movement. This shows the reader the lifestyle of the south, and provides a deeper understanding of the characters and the story. To Kill a Mockingbird has characters that are unforgettable. One of the elements of making those characters memorable are their actions. For example, Jem and Jean Louise both are very similar. They love their father, but break rules sometimes. They also run around freely in the town. The setting is a small town which makes all of these characteristics and actions very common for kids living in a small town in the south. Also, when the town is gathered to the courthouse, the reader can understand a lot more about all the people in Maycomb. The events, actions, and scenes all make the characters who they are, and that all has to do with the setting of the
Understanding perspective is essential to understanding people. Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird presents this idea in multiple passages of her writing. It can be seen in the rough, unknown troubles that people face despite their wrongful actions. As well as the rumours that are untrue and give complete false impressions of people. Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird uses these topics to illustrate the dangers of judging others before getting to know them.
It is very evident that Maycomb is a small town in which there is much racism, and social status greatly determines what kind of life you will lead. The different types of social inequality are an important theme in the novel, and Harper Lee
The novel is set during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. During this time, many
Perspectives can change beliefs in many ways. In Harper Lee’s novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, Bob Ewell hears and sees Atticus defending Tom Robinson who is black, therefore, he believes Atticus ‘loves niggers’. Jem, Scout, and Dill have never seen Boo Radley come out at day and they hear rumors that Boo only comes out at night. People believe rumors and their perspectives until they get the truth and change their beliefs.
To KIll a Mockingbird, a novel written by Harper Lee, is set in a small fictional town of Maycomb Alabama in the 1930’s. The story emphasizes the horrors of prejudiced and its impact on a small southern community. In this novel, Harper Lee introduces the reader to many themes, one of them being that courage is doing what’s right even when the odds of succeeding are poor.
Maycomb was a slow poor town. Harper Lee made it seem like this was a town full of nothing, people move slow and just mumbled around everywhere. At this time everyone was struggling with the great depression and racism colored people were referred to as niggers because people didn't know better they thought it was weird that they weren't the same as everyone else and i think that scared them. Maycomb county had nothing to fear but itself (pg7). Kids didn't go to school back then they had to stay home and help their families survive the long summer days on the farm. Most kids went to school the first day so the sheriff wouldn't come to the front door of their homes. But that is the setting of Maycomb county. My name is Dawson Creasey and im currently reading To Kill A Mockingbird. I think it’s a wonderful adventure book and you can learn many things from
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character responded differently to their loss of innocence.
Raising children in the era of Jim Crow laws provided a unique teaching experience for Atticus to provide to Scout and Jem. These laws followed the Southern societal ideas of the separation between races, but also demonstrated a division between a community where individuals held different moral ideas. To Kill a Mockingbird explores human morality from the perception of a six year old child, providing a different perspective on important issues of this time period. Scout’s understanding of morality develops from her once simple idea of an individual being either good or evil to a much more complete comprehension of its complexity. In retrospect, Scout as the narrator revels in her naivety and child-like innocence throughout her
The story took place in the 1930’s in a town called Maycomb, Alabama. The story is told to us by a young child in her perspective. It was during the time where racism was a big part of the word still. The story told by the child during a trail of an African American facing charges of rape of a white women. The child name is scout and her father Atticus given the trial to defend the African American name Tom Robison, but Atticus already knew how the outcome of the trial was going to be. Atticus raised his children Scout and Jem in a very different way from many different white folks raised their own. Jem and Scout get to see a different perspective of the world from their father Atticus and there black cook Calpurnia. Jem and Scout did not have a mother figure so Calpurnia took the role of being the mother figure by giving her life lesson to Scout and Jem. Jem and Scout to see the world how it is instead of seeing the black and white like most people. Atticus try’s to be honest with his children and does his best to explain things to his children that would make his children understand the situation. As a reader we see that Atticus try’s to do good for the community for the whites and blacks. He want his children to believe that tolerance of people and for the word of the bible, but to accept and forgive as well of other people way of thinking.
“I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks”(Lee 304). This concept that Scout brings up goes against what others Maycomb believe in as Maycomb County from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has lots of prejudice. Two reasons why the setting is very significant are, Maycomb County is a small town the significance of that is that everyone knows each other and often have the same views as each other this in turn causes prejudice. Also, Maycomb community finds their history to be very important this changes how people act which shows how the setting could have major effects. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, setting is very significant.
Education of the Black people in the south interconnects with To Kill A Mockingbird. If you look in the book, Tom Robinson had enough education to talk and somewhat good grammar during the trial, while some Black people did not have that good of an education. Most Black people did not have the opportunity to get education like the White people did because of the extreme prejudice towards them.
Some of the most well know authors and poets have indirectly impacted the world in one way or another, with the use of their literary works. Whether it be opening oneself up to the philosophies or ideologies of the author, or by improving an individual's English comprehension and composition skills. For example authors such as Harper Lee; the novelist of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” have depicted through her book the unjust and inhumane treatment of African Americans in America’s South. It is hard to believe that at one time these world renowned authors and poets were once the prodigies of English literature teachers. And in this research paper we will examine the role English literature teacher play in the worlds past, present, and future
“Nothing will ever be the same again. You can tell me if that oughta be good or bad, but that won’t change a goddamn thing.” Trying to find herself while being judged at every turn, Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” is set on a young girl named Scout whose father is helping an African-American who was convicted of rape. Atticus’s struggle with the community's opinions leaves him and his family at a struggle in the center of attention.
A Mockingbird is a grayish songbird found in tropical America. The book to Kill A Mockingbird says that it is a sin to kill a Mockingbird. (Lee 103) In the story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout is a young girl who has a pretty good life in Maycomb Alabama. But her curiosity began when Dill came to Maycomb for the summer and she started becoming more interested in Boo Radley and why he always stays in his house. But then the story takes an unexpected turn when Atticus takes the Tom Robinson trial and Scout starts to see that this world is crueler than she thought and she starts to question everything she even knew. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, the mockingbird theory shows us that some people are like mockingbirds by
One of the most interesting themes in chapters 9-11 is parenting it is interesting to see how open Atticus is towards Scout telling her everything about his case and what he believes in, he does not hide anything from her and is willing to raise her towards what he knows is right even though she is still very young, partly the reason towards why Atticus is so open towards Scout is because Scout is very curious and does not know much about the world and society since she is still so young but she still hears many things around her such as “Nigger Lover” which is a word she hears in a daily life but still does not understand until Atticus explains it to her "Scout," said Atticus, "nigger-lover is just one
