Support the Right to Carry a Concealed Weapon
More than seven out of eight people in the United States own one or more guns (“Gun Control”). If the United States does not support and protect gun rights, then we will lose them and will be a step towards tyranny. In order to protect our freedoms and our individual safety, the nation needs to continue to protect our right to keep and bear arms. The nation needs to look at the outcomes of past societies with strict gun control. The United States also needs to look at the rights that some are trying to get rid of because they think it will help with the crime rate when really it will actually have the reverse effect. On July 26, 2014, U.S. District Court Judge, Frederick Scullin Jr., vetoed Washington, DC's ban on carrying a handgun outside the citizen's property for self defense ("Concealed Guns"). If the law had been passed, then DC would become a popular location for criminals because no one besides local authority could protect themselves. Supporter of gun rights believe gun control laws go against the Second Amendment because they restrict the right to bear arms. Charlton Heston, NRA president, said, "Instead of fighting the Redcoats we're fighting the blue-blooded elitists. Instead of fighting for independence, we are fighting for independence, we are fighting for individual freedom" (Lunger 70). We are fighting for our freedom to exercise our belief of gun rights.
Supporters of gun control want longer waiting periods and support the Brady Bill which is a law that requires a waiting period and background checks before purchasing a handgun (“Gun Control”; Speiser). Supporters believe that stricter gun control laws will prevent mass shootings. However, if no one was allowed to carry a concealed weapon, then no one other than the police could put a stop to the criminal.
