In the Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath gives the reader an understanding of her stance on marriage and how she perceives the world. Throughout her five marriages, the Wife has learned a great deal. As her marriages progressed, there is a shift in power both physically and emotionally. Throughout her marriages she has a sense of authority and uses it to her advantage to gain satisfaction within her relationships. Historically the man is portrayed as the head of marriage, but the Wife of Bath shows that is not always the case. When Geofrey Chaucer wrote The Wife Of Bath in the late fourteenth century, the role of a woman was to always be beneath her husband. Alison is trying to argue that just because she is a woman does not mean she should have to follow certain protocol within her marriage. To further defend her point she references Salomon as an example of an individual who had multiple wives. She uses this stance as a way to further enhance her point that men and women can both be sexually desired. During this time, women were far from being powerful, but Alisoun had a different experience. After her first three husbands die she is left with their fortune which gave her power. “I have the power during al my life, Upon his proper body, and nat he” (line 164). She is stating that even when her husbands were alive, they were loyal, faithful, and let her have control. What is also important to mention is while Alisoun deferred from the “normal” woman during this time, she actually did not that much. During this time, it unacceptable in society to get a divorce, and she followed that custom. Her first three marriages ended because her spouse died, her fourth marriage ended because he had a mistress. “She was a worthy woman al hr live. Husbonds at church doore she hadde five, Withouten other compaignye in youthe” (line 461). Meaning, she has been a worthy partner throughout her entire marriages, why should not obtain more power in her relationships?
