Essay On Tragic Hero In The Crucible

“There are no greater treasures than the highest human qualities such as compassion, courage and hope. Not even tragic accident or disaster can destroy such treasures of the heart” (Daisaku Ikeda). In the play, “The Crucible” there are many characters that have an effect on each other. Two of the characters that could be called tragic heroes are John Proctor and Reverend Hale. The most tragic hero in my opinion was John Proctor. Although Reverend Hale may be considered a tragic hero to some people, John Proctor is the definition of a tragic hero because he risked his life, he tried to do what was right and he showed immense courage throughout the play. In Act 4 John Proctor says, “No, it is not the same! What others say and what I sign to is not the same!” (Miller 142). When he is asked to sign, he says no. He says no because he wants to keep his honor amongst Salem but still wants people to know that he is not a witch. When he does not sign this it shows that he is indeed risking his life which eventually leads to his death. John Proctor shows that risking a life can a can’t be the smart thing to do depending on the cause. John Proctor tried to do that right thing, he tried to do what was best. In Act 4 John Proctor says, “And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat.”(Miller 110). When he tells Danforth about what he did with Abigail he is trying to do what he thinks is best for his wife. He tells Danforth about what he did because he wants to prove to him that the girls are lying in the court. In Act 3 Proctor says, “Mary. Now tell the governor how you danced in the woods.” (Miller 104). When John Proctor uses Mary Warren to testify against the girls he is only trying to prove to Danforth and everyone else in Salem that they are lying! By using her is doing what is best for the town of Salem. John Proctor did everything he could to be sure that he was doing everything that was right. Clearly, John Proctor is the tragic hero.
