Since beginning my peer tutoring placement I have performed new and unique tasks on a daily basis. At the start of the semester I primarily circulated the classroom explaining concepts to students and answering their questions. As the semester progressed my activities have been refined to be more efficient and effective at helping individual students. With the assistance of Ms. Randle I have been able to pinpoint individual students that would benefit the most from my assistance. These students all have unique individual needs that I try to fine-tune my assistance to accommodate. I constantly strive to better understand each individual’s learning skills.
One example of a way I accommodate a certain student is by reading and writing for him. Early in the semester, it was noticed that this student struggled to get work done. This was not due to a lack of understanding but instead due to issues writing down his ideas and reading the material. Ms. Randle recommended that I focus my attention primarily on him as he needed the most one-on-one help of all the students in the class. Additionally, it was noted that without my assistance he was in jeopardy of failing the class.

Randle about the day’s activities and discussing what I can do to be the most effective that day. After this I circulate the classroom seeing if students had any issues with the homework or the worksheets they are working on. If the primary focus of that day is a working period then I will continue to circulate and assist students with any issues. Otherwise, if the focus is a lesson day I will sit quietly while infrequently contributing to the class discussion. Additionally, I will take notes so I can better understand the material to teach and so that if students miss the class they can have a copy of what we learned that
Being a part of my school’s peer tutoring program has been the most gratifying experience of my high school career. As a student, I can relate to those that struggle in a subject and are unable to connect with the material being taught in class. I have worked with students who have lost confidence in themselves because of the difficulty they were having in school. To be given the opportunity to assist students to reach their academic goals is fulfilling. As a peer tutor, I edit essays, share scholarship searches, assist with homework, and provide studying tips and test taking strategies. Peer tutoring, is simply helping your peers to the best of your ability, with a subject that they are struggling with or just want justification on. I personally have been tutoring others since I was in seventh grade when I began helping elementary school aged children with their homework after school at a community center near my middle school. Tutoring became a newly found passion of mine at that time, and I have enjoyed the opportunity ever since. When I saw that Antioch offered tutoring as a senior class, I was ecstatic, and I signed up immediately. If I am not mistaken, similar to signing up for service learning, one must have a teacher recommendation to take this particular course. There may be other guidelines that I am not aware of at the time, but believe me, taking peer tutoring is well worth it. As a senior, you have to worry about applying to colleges or jobs, applying for scholarships, getting community service hours, working, finishing your capstone project, taking senior pictures, making invitations and announcements, finding internships, and so much

With constantly increasing classroom sizes becoming the norm in the US, students are quietly slipping through the cracks with relative ease (Lee, and Loeb 17). Some have the means to compensate for this lack of attention, by hiring private tutors and such, but many cannot rely on this option. The Youth Tutoring Program, a branch of the Catholic Community Services of Western Washington, seeks to address this issue, helping families who have been placed in low and mixed income housing projects. For elementary school kids, their services and curriculum appear well manicured, focusing on reading comprehension and skill building. But for the older attendees of the program, who bring in challenging assignments daily, no such planning exists and the tutor’s personal experience comes more into play. In my time volunteering for YTP, at least once per session a student and I will reach an impasse, usually where the limits of my own memory become a problem. In one such case, I could not explain simple, compound, and complex sentences – thus having to sneakily resort to my phone for details. In these situations, the student has hit a wall and essentially puts the assignment in my hands, expecting that somehow I know all the answers. They become disengaged, and in the time spent racking their brain for answers, no doubt feeling disparate from their peers and distancing themselves from the subject as a whole. Evidence of successful change can be seen through making a difference in the student’s everyday life. After the first month of testing the improvements, peer learning should have boosted up a student’s confidence and learning style. Throughout the months, students should be asked about how their peer learning is changing their learning style, this way the school can see the beginning and end result of student’s working together. With this being said, peer to peer learning should help students in improving their self-esteem and make them become a stronger individual. Children should be encouraged to think about risks and given more independence, so they are more likely to grow in confidence. If a child’s experiences is limited its likely that the child may find it difficult to assess and manage risks on their own .If we become to obsess about their health an safety, we may affect their learning development and abilities. Sometimes it’s good to offer them challenging environment for them to deal with risks under our observation also when a child sustain or witness injuries they gain direct experience of their action and choices.
A tutor should know their students and their abilities and plan sessions accordingly. Through personal practice I have demonstrated by using different strategies for individual students’s needs and have set plans accordingly. All students have different learning
What does a Teaching Assistant (TA) do? there are many variations to this role making this not a straight forward question to answer. There are class teaching assistants, Special Educational Needs (SEN) teaching assistants, specialist subject teaching assistants, Higher Level teaching assistants (HLTA’s) to name a few. The job role will differ from school to school as TA’s are present in schools from Early Years classrooms through to senior and upper schools, making the role of a TA an extremely diverse and varied one.
Response: I remember struggling when it came to knowing anything about college and the whole process. So during summer, I join a college prep camp, it was a week-long camp. I learned a lot more about college and how easy it was to apply. They taught me about financial aid and about scholarships. How to spend your money wisely. Another educational challenge I faced was the SAT, I knew I needed help with that test. I knew nothing about it, I didn't know any strategies to help me. I have been peer tutoring three students in Spanish for at least three hours a week since my freshman year. Learning Spanish in a classroom setting since I was a second grader has instilled a love of the Spanish language. Having initially struggled with learning Spanish and subsequently having to figure out how to learn the material, I knew that I could help other students with the same dilemma. As is often the case, students who struggle find solace in apathy. Most students are eager to learn and sometimes certain classroom settings defeat their spirit, especially when these students don’t take to subject matter naturally. The classroom follows a partial day inclusion program. Ms. Welsh’s classroom on the second floor of Village School is considered their base area. The student’s belongings are all kept in the classroom upstairs and they spend the majority of their time there throughout the day. All students are taught by both teachers for math, science, and social studies. For reading and writing, Ms. Wilush teaches three students in a pull-out resource room on the first floor of the building. When it is time for students to review those lessons, the three students make their way down to Ms. Wilush’s classroom with the folders and other materials they may need. Once reading and writing periods are completed, the students either return to Ms. Welsh’s classroom or go to an alternate room for specials such as art or music. Ms. Wilush and Ms. Welsh’s relationship can be described as both friendly and professional. Ms. Welsh is currently going to graduate school for special education, so she is learning a lot from Ms. Wilush’s work. At the same time, Ms. Wilush is taking the opportunity to learn from such an experienced teacher as Ms. Welsh who has taught for ten years. The education habits of students are rooted in them from the earliest days of their educational careers. The different influences on students, whether it be inside educational institutions, or outside is huge. The teacher of a classroom is the first and most pertinent influence in a student's educational career. Teachers provide students with the basic skills they would need to survive not only in the academic world, but also the world beyond. The relationship between teachers and their students is the key element in creating an educational atmosphere that is both pleasant and effective.
