What is the effect of undocumented immigrants on America? There were an estimated 11.4 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. as of 2012 (United States Department of Homeland Security), that number has quickly dropped because of President Donald Trump’s policies. There are many positive effects of undocumented immigrants. I believe that undocumented immigrants should not be deported.
The first reason that undocumented immigrants should not be deported is because they improve America’s economy. According to UCLA’s Professor Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda, “Legalizing our nation's undocumented immigrant population and reforming our legal immigration system would add a cumulative $1.5 trillion to U.S. GDP over a decade.” Hinojosa-Ojeda also found that “Tax benefits alone from legalization would be between $4.5 billion and $5.4 billion in the first three years.” Another example is that according to Notre Dame’s

As said by the co-chair Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard of the Congressional Women’s Working Group on Immigration Reform, “I am deeply concerned about the Trump Administration’s immigration policies and actions… Sacrificing the well-being of children for any purpose is immoral and inhumane. It goes against the fundamental values of our nation and our legacy of treasuring and protecting children.” According to several academic studies, “A child’s risk of having mental health problems like depression, anxiety, and severe psychological distress increases following the detention and/or deportation of a parent. Children with undocumented family members live in fear that they will be taken away—circumstances that can lead to toxic stress which, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, can harm brain development and negatively impact short- and long-term
As Charles E. Schumer (Upfront magazine,2016), “Far too many people illegally cross our borders, and we turn away people who want to legally enter our country -- people who could invent new technologies, create jobs, and boost our economy.” Schumer’s point is that in the past, undocumented immigrants have helped so much in our economy that we haven’t realized it. If it wasn’t for the undocumented people, we wouldn’t have the things and technologies we have today. Of course, it is possible to disagree with the view that undocumented immigrants improve our economy and instead argue that undocumented immigrants take American citizens’ jobs. However, the weight of the evidence is on the other side. What must be remembered is that immigrants come to the US to get a better life, so they boost our economy on the way. This is fundamentally why undocumented immigrants are improving our
The Consolation of Philosophy was written by Boethius, a Roman senator and philosopher of the early 6th century. He entered public service under the rule of King Theodoric the Great, who later imprisoned him on charges of conspiracy to overthrow the throne. The philosophical dialogue written by Boethius was done while he was incarcerated and awaiting his execution. In it, he explains the injustice of his charges, which were done by people who lacked scrupulous and are, in his opinion, evil. Through his lamentations, a personification of Philosophy appears and she criticizes his actions as he seems to have strayed from the philosophical path to become an emotional being. Philosophy, throughout the whole work, is the voice of reason. She attempts
Within the United States there are more than11 million undocumented immigrants. This makes up at least 3.5% of the population total. Immigration law as have resulted in a situation where many undocumented immigrants live and work in the United States, but is also an issue entirely blow out of proportion by media and politician. Undocumented immigrants are beneficial to the US economy because they make up the majority of our work force and bring in billions in revenue yearly.
Illegal immigrants in America have contributed massively to the Economy and researchers have facts and evidence to back up their finding. For the most part many people are not educated enough about the concept illegal immigrants or don’t bother to look for the fact about illegal immigrants. Their contribution to the economy is very productive, according to the institute on taxation and economy: Collectively, undocumented immigrants in the United States pay an estimated total of $11.74 billion in state and local taxes a year (see Table 1 for state-by-state estimates). This includes more than $7 billion in sales and excise taxes, $3.6 billion in property taxes, and $1.1 billion in personal income taxes (Christensen, Gardner, Hill, Wiehe). As
In today’s society, many undocumented people from down South cross to America in order to find a new life and to chase a dream like any immigrant would, but it’s hurting the American society in every way. All the immigrants who cross the border to the US illegally meaning without permission by the US government are considered lawbreakers for crossing the border without any approval whatsoever. Many of these illegal immigrants are affecting the American economy and society. Undocumented immigrants are hurting the American economy.
Undocumented immigrants in the United States cannot obtain a driver’s license since they do not have social security cards and other essential identification documents. A few states, however, have enacted laws to permit illegal immigrants to drive on the states’ public roads and highways. Such states, through their Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), issue driver’s authorization cards (DAC) to these immigrants (Nava par. 1). The policy gives the immigrants driving privilege and helps states to collect more revenues and reduce cases of uninsured motorists. At the moment, Nevada and ten other states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws that permit the issuance of DACs to undocumented immigrants within their borders (“Ten States and DC” par. 1). Most states legislatures, including Florida’s’, are yet to enact laws that allow for the issuance DACs to immigrants in those states. This paper discusses the DAC policy in details and makes recommendations to Florida States’ legislators to adopt the policy in their state.
Undocumented workers help our economy by generating new jobs. An example of this can be seen in the following report made by Mehta et al., which states: “Undocumented immigrants in the Chicago metro area spending approximately $2.89 billion annually from their earnings. These annual expenditures of $2.89 billion generate an additional $2.56 billion in local spending. Therefore, the direct, indirect, and induced spending of undocumented workers accounts for a total of $5.45 billion spent annually in the metro area economy, or 1.5% of the Gross Regional Product for 2001. This spending generates 31,908 additional jobs in the local economy.” This report shows how greatly this marginalized group contributes to our economy, although they are not legal residents of this country. Pointing out this fact leads to the argument that legalizing all of these immigrants will help our economy even more than what they already do, since it means that more people will be paying taxes which means that more money will be collected from those
In “Illegal Immigration Creates Large Fiscal Costs for US Taxpayers” by Robert Rector he analyzes this point. One of his points being that “In 2010, the average unlawful immigrant household received around $24,721 in government benefits and services while paying some $10,334 in taxes” This data is accurate but where are the government benefits going if legally non-citizens can’t receive government funds. Most likely the majority benefits are given to the American children of this illegal immigrants in the form of Medicaid and food stamps, and therefore benefit Americans. In Lynch’s argument he cancels this argument, “Over the 10-year period they would earn $392 billion more and pay an additional $109 billion in taxes,” now it’s billion they would contribute to the economy instead of taking money. Another argument is that with better jobs and a legal status immigrants would actually pay more taxes to the government. Many of them don’t currently do so because they have no social security card, hints why they only pay “$10,334” in taxes. On the other hand many do pay a lot on taxes and since they cant receive any benefits in reality they pay for many benefits they do not qualify for. If people oppose legalization because it would mean tax cost and instead support deportation one of the statements in Ann Garcia’s “The Facts Support Immigration Reform with a Path to Citizenship” could change their
Today in the United States, illegal immigrants has become a subject that has left many people upset and angry of the view on deportation. Unfortunately at the cost of personal relationships and attachments with friends and family. Yet in 1947,Helbert Leyman hit the topic of immigration right on the head by saying,“ We are a nation of immigrants. It is immigrants who brought to this land the skills of their hands and brains to make of it a beacon of opportunity and hope for all men (Messener,et al, 127).” Immigrants hands built this country of ours, what it is today. Fast Forward sixty-six years to the present, and these words by Herbert Lehman still ring true today. Our government should closely regulate the flow of immigrants into the
If the United States were to deport all undocumented immigrants about $2.6 trillion would be lost. Also over five years it would cost 285 billion to just deport all the undocumented immigrants. Immigrants make a big positive impact on the United States through the work force.
Many American citizens are responsible for illegal Mexican immigrants’ determination to enter the United States because numerous American citizen’s revenue money, drugs, and fame as a lifestyle which makes America the center of attraction for illegal immigrants to cross the border. It is clear that most Mexican immigrants transport an abundant amount of money payments and drugs across the U.S. border in return for more money so gangs and cartels can earn a recognized status through money and respect. Citizens of the U.S. have impacted and altered the American social economic status in a negative way. Most Mexican immigrants travel north in groups to cross the United States border to achieve their goal; live a better life so they can support themselves and their family. Although there are U.S. customs and border patrol agencies that have a duty to protect and secure the border from illegal aliens entering the U.S., some still successfully cross and enter the U.S. -Mexican border illegally. In the book The Devil’s Highway, Urrea explains the “Rules of the Game” where illegal immigrants experience a traitorous journey depending on their guides. Their country and group leader fail to successfully support the group and citizens of Mexico.
Next, a study by Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda states that using a comprehensive immigration plan that involves giving current undocumented immigrants legal status would benefit the country with 1.5 trillion dollars in additional GDP growth over 10 years while increasing wages for all workers. Additionally, tax revenue would be increased by 4.5+ billion dollars over three years. The same study shows the cost of mass deportation, which is 2.6 trillion dollars in lost GDP over 10 years while increased wages for less-skilled workers. These undocumented immigrants certainly have a heavy influence regarding the economy, and it may be beneficial to incorporate them by granting amnesty as opposed to other solutions such as mass deportation. With legal status, the 11 million undocumented individuals can be more productive and help further strengthen the U.S. economy.
The United States is a country affected by illegal immigration. The term illegal aliens or what is most commonly known as illegal immigrants, the word alien is simply a person who comes from a foreign country. A much more accurate expression for these groups of individuals is the term illegal alien. The term illegal alien is a much more precise term because it deals with both undocumented aliens as well as nonimmigrant visa overstayers. Both terms illegal alien as well as illegal immigrant are used to describe individuals who have broken the law of our country to enter and work illegally. The majority of the immigrants who come to this country illegally are in search of the
The most avidly debated effects of immigration involve the United States’ economy and labor force. It is estimated that there are 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States today, and their impact on the economy can be perceived as positive as well as negative. The overall effect is unclear, and this essay will present both sides of the debate.
New Historicism is a modern literary theory that focuses on how events, culture, and places within a society influence a written work. New Historicists analyze allusions to characteristics of the time period in which the work was written. By definition, new historicism seeks to discover the significance in a text by taking into account the work within the construction of the established ideas and assumptions of its historical era. Literary texts are entrenched with historical context and the author is seen as subject to the forces of the culture that he or she works within. New Historicists reject the New Critical principle that texts are autonomous and should be read without any comparison to history, and instead argue that texts are
