Structure The structure of the two poems is similar in various ways. Firstly, both the “Lake Isle of Innisfree” and “When you are Old” poems have three stanzas. Secondly, each verse is made of four lines. This makes both poems to have a total of twelve lines each, (Holliday, 66). Themes Empathy: The theme of empathy is common in both poems. Both personas confirm that they would love to be in a particular state that is not presently availed to them. For example, the persona in the “Lake Isle of Innisfree” says that “he/she will arise and go.” Comparatively, the persona in “When you are Old poem states that “when you are old and full of sleep.” All these quotes from both poems confirm that the personas are lamenting or simply not content with their current situation. This is an indicator of empathetic feelings that discontent their present conditions. Solitude: Solitude is the state of seclusion or loneliness. Thus, it is among the major themes shared by both poems.
