Summary One- Strengths, Weaknesses, and Readiness After completing several assignments for UNIV 150, I have found that I have been given several tools and exercises to help advance my writing skills. These experiences have helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses, allowed me to learn new ways to tackle college, but most of all, enabled me to acquire knowledge in ways to improve my written language.
The first few journal entries and public discussion boards weren’t particularly challenging; I felt like I wouldn’t have a problem in this class. That was until the grade came back for Essay One. I scored a 2.81 out of 5; unexpected, disappointed and disheartened.
At first, I could not overcome the obstacle of the essay grade itself.

This strength remained consistent in the feedback for Essay Two. However, instead of looking at the grade, I directed my attention to the review section first. I wanted to see where I had improved, not how badly I'd done on the essay; much to my surprise, I'd exceeded the last grade significantly.
My mechanics still need work, but improvements are evident in how I've begun to construct my introductions and conclusions. Receiving great feedback on my essay submissions is helping me focus on the more crucial parts that need improvement, rather than continue to think that all I have problems with are where to place commas and semi-colons.
UNIV 150 has assigned a couple of reading assignments on how to approach college and different ways to study. Being a veteran student, I was confident and thought I knew how to conquer different types of classes. The instructions and insights given have helped me accomplish my work in other classes with enjoyment instead of stress. Taking these lessons, in combination with trying to improve my writing, has allowed me to open my mind up to the possibility that I might be able to write with
Over the course of this semester, I have learned many things to improve my writing. Having taken the course before, this semester has been an excellent opportunity to expand on my existing knowledge. Although I had written many essays before, there is still much to be learned and improved. Two factors of writing that I had learned or improved on this semester were transitions/topic sentences and how to properly structure a conclusion paragraph.
After analyzing many of my written works, I highlighted my writing weaknesses along with notable strengths. Evident in my earlier works, my vocabulary was more basic and was not as powerful unlike my more recent essays. Seeking to improve, I started utilizing words I learned during the year
Using frequently over used words can corrupt even the best essay. I received a grade of C overall. I was quite disappointed in myself and my performance as I know I have the ability to do better. There were four places that should have had commas
There comes a time in life where we see an impossible obstacle, and do the best that we can to overcome it. For me, this was my AP English Language class in high school during senior year. The time was now, summer is nearly over. I analyzed my strengths and weaknesses, giving a full re-evaluation of myself. In the end, I consider myself an average writer. There have been times in the past when I’ve written letters or personal stories. However, those have never been my strongest set of skills. While I have been serious with my writing, I never recognized the unbelievable advantages that good writing has. Therefore, I’ve made it my goal to improve my literal skills and become a great writer. Maybe this new class will assist me in becoming that
I felt confident with the essay I wrote. I was expecting at least a B, but I ended up getting and an A. My grade was fair but I know I still have areas where I need to improve. Again.
This course offers numerous opportunities to improve our writing. In this class, I not only enhanced the skills I already had, but also learned new writing concepts. Before I took this class, I knew that my writing is poor, and I have always wanted to improve it; however, I did not know how and what aspects of writing to improve. So, I came into this class with the ambition to improve my writing, and I have accomplished my goal although there is still room for improvement. At this point of this course, I have learned the elements that successful writing is composed of, and I am now able to categorize the various techniques that can work together to define strong
I learned, that in order to get a good score on my AP essays, it will take a lot of effort, and I won't have a lot of time. I need to write in a way that the reader can understand and comprehend my ideas, and control of language, while successfully getting my point across in a clear-cut way. This will allow me to get a score based how effective the essay is (Nine being the most effective and zero being the least). In addition, my score should reflect the essay’s quality as a whole. Completing this activity helped me realize that the expectations are high when it comes to writing essay, and I will need to work hard to get the best score that I can.
Chapter 2 of Successful College Writing written by Kathleen McWhorter focused on several different points. However, the main core of the chapter is mostly focused* on college writing and what is expected of it. It mentions* how college introduces you to new forms of writing, and also using sources to support your information and arguments in your essays. This chapter not only mentions the new writing styles you will experience, but also how to be successful in them by giving you helpful tips and aiding you in figuring out your learning style.
When writing the final prose essay, I was not feeling very confident that I would increase in score from my previous 2. My prewriting was nonexistent and I wrote the entire essay in less than twenty minutes with little understanding of the prompt and what it was asking for. That being said, I somehow managed to score a 5 on my prose essay so I must have done something right.
Throughout my semester in English 131, I have gained many improvements to both my writing skills and my writing process. One such improvement was making me think critically on my essays in both this class and another class where we had to write essays. On all of my later self-reviews, I constantly gave way below what I was eventually given, and that helped me so much, by changing my essays so much more than what I would have done originally. That is evident by how my grade has steadily gone up on each of my papers. The memoir that I first wrote was my first ever graded that was really beneficial to my grade, and I got a 44 out of 50. The next paper that I wrote was a profile, and I got the same grade on that as my memoir. The first improvement that I had was on the review essay, and that was only by one point above the other papers that I wrote. Lastly, the best improvement that I have had was with my final paper, a proposal essay. On that essay, I got a 49 out of 50, a major improvement to my other pieces of writing.
When I first started the class I was struggling a lot. Since English is my second language, I had many stressful moments that made me think about dropping my classes. But when I thought about my future, I just kept studying even harder, waiting for my performance to improve. As a result, I felt like every time I wrote an essay, it got easier, which tells me that I’m on the right path. In addition, this class has helped me improve my grammar, taught me an important life lesson about sticking on my goal and helped me to enhance my computer skills
The third essay that was written was a critical argument. This assignment required me to choose two articles from the school library and write an essay stating my opinion on a particular subject. The topic I chose was medical marijuana. This topic was interesting to me, so it made the assignment fun. On this essay I had fewer mistakes than in previous essays. I continued to struggle with APA citation and the use of commas. When I looked at the feedback from this essay, it gave me confidence. I felt that I was learning and my writing skills were improving.
I strongly believe you should give me extra ten points on my semester grade average, because I know that I may not always follow the exact directions giving to us for writing an essay, but I promise you that I try my hardest to get it right each time we write an essay.I am a man of ambition, I like to get my work done in order for me to achieve my goals. If one improves his or her writing, you think they're trying their hardest to do better? Do you think we try our hardest in class?
Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
Furthermore, I learned through my work in this class that I struggle with conventions and mechanics. After, submitting many of my essays, I noticed that in my feedback I had received many notes about conventions, grammar, and punctuation. This revealed to me that I had to work on proofreading my essay deeper and make
