I don’t like expensive things. I don’t usually desire things I can’t afford, and if I do, I usually take the cheap route. However, in 9th grade I joined HOSA, or the Health Occupation Students of America. The club wasn’t what I expected to be, but this was the first time I had to budget for something. It was the fall of 2014, and the club adviser mentioned the overnight trip to Fall Rally in Atlanta was coming up. At the time, I was ecstatic to be in the club and I was egaer to participate in every activity. There was a catch, though. The trip was $495, and my parents were not going to give me that much money for a two-day trip. The responsibility fell squarely upon me to raise the money. The most difficult part for me was earning the …show more content…
At first, it didn't work on account of how awkward I am, but soon people felt bad so they started buying chocolate from me. At the end of the fundraiser I raised about $50 at school. My church was a different story. My family is very active in the churches ministries, so everyone knew my face. Before and after service, I'd go around and greet everyone. Then, I would remind the members that I was an honor roll student. Next, I would bring up that I wanted to go on an educational trip to Atlanta, but needed help raising money. I sold almost $250 worth of chocolate at the church. I turned in $300 dollars in total, and my prospects were favorable. The second fundraiser caused a bump in the road. This fundraiser went through this company called Mixed Bags. Their bags are chic, but they aren't made well. I bought a bag for myself, and it looks nice, but the zipper broke off about two weeks after I received it. No one in my school wanted a bag. In all honesty, you can buy similar bags at Wal-Mart for half the price. I couldn't rely on the church for support, because it was still recovering from the chocolate sales. At first, this didn't work and my parent bought some bags to help me out. I then realized that I hadn't considered some major contributors to my cause, my extended family. The thought came at s most opportune time, because around this time my aunt had a cook
I find fund raising difficult because asking for money, even from my parents, makes me uncomfortable. I would much rather earn the money from yard work, pet sitting, and other odd end jobs to raise the money. That said, I did send out letters to family members and family and family friends because the doubt I had about the $1,200 each member of the group raised. I earned about seven hundred dollars of the money needed and the rest, donated. In my letter, I explained the types of activities I thought we would do (keeping it as vague as possible since I did not know what to expect). After I sent the letters out, my focus remained on the people of New Orleans. The group that planned on going to New Orleans met once a month to help prepare ourselves for what we would experience on the trip. At the meetings we played ice breakers, prayed (galore), talked about what to bring, we watched clips of the aftermath from Hurricane Katrina, and we also had Mr. Cascio come in and inform the group on the history and the importance of New Orleans. Everyone anticipated the trip, even though our flight left hours earlier than anyone wanted. We began our journey from Seattle to Denver from which we flew the rest of the way to New Orleans, Louisiana. The chaperones retrieved the rental cars and then lead us to the church we would stay at. The rest of the
Marks Church, I have participated in numerous Pack-A-Thons with Feed the Hunger to provide food for people living in poverty. We pack hundreds of bags of food to be shipped to people in need. I participated in the 30 Hour Famine with Feed the Hunger. We raised about $16,000 for people living in poverty and did not eat for 30 hours straight.
Bonnie Green, Chief Estimator, agreed that in a normal year only slight delays might develop due to a shortage of labor. However, she pointed out that for such a large project, the company would have to use unionized employees and that the construction industry labor agreements with New York City were to expire on October 30, 2004. Past experience and current construction activity in the surrounding area indicated that any union tradesman would support a strike against the city. Since this is a public project, she estimates that there is a 50% chance that they would strike this project to gain the attention of the national media.
We mostly raised money by selling goods, but I was driven to be an example of giving back by providing a good attitude, lessons to inspire kindness, and implemented events. When I realized how much money my ideas made, I couldn't stop innovating new ways to promote our purpose. This drove me to do more which lead me to go speak on television and ask for donations during my chorus concert. As I thanked them, I reminded them how grateful we are to be a part of a community that's bonded together by love. When we reached our goal of $15,000, we used that money to buy a student glasses, send a child to the doctors, bought some clothes for someone in need, etc. Holiday Hope inspired me and taught me how one person could make a huge impact while bringing people
Many students are very split on their opinion on the fundraiser, but as it stands now it is far out of the student’s hands. Senior, Emily Dux a member of National Honor Society, was just as unsure as the rest of the student body.
We went to the store and bought toiletries, bread, peanut butter and jelly, water, juice boxes, and many other things to distribute to the homeless around town. These items were essentials that were desperately needed by these people, and the money we raised in order to get these items went a long way. We were very nervous about just walking up to people and passing these things out, the idea of a stranger coming up to you and handing you items is a scary thought in itself, but being on the other end is even scarier because you don’t know how others will react.
Fundraising is a crucial element to being successful in any group, and usually fundraisers are more profitable when they have a unique element. Last year, my color guard team in high school wanted new uniforms. Our old uniforms were falling apart, but instead of just asking the school for the money to purchase the new uniforms, we as a team decided to fundraise for them. As the captain of the team, I decided that we should do a pie in the face contest. At a basketball game, we put out a table with jars on it. Each jar belonged to a member of the color guard team, and if their individual jar reached twenty five dollars, that member would get a pie in the face at the next basketball game. This was a unique, quirky way to raise money and get the
What sets this fundraiser aside from all usual fundraisers is that it helps create a meaning of realization and understanding of the people that they are helping by getting people to give up something that those people don`t have for 40 hours and what we take for granted in everyday life. This deeper understanding gives the fundraiser more meaning and spirituality, knowing that what you are suffering during this fundraiser is done by people you are helping every
We also helped plan and attend various fundraisers at different locations around Gainesville. I helped organize and set up our main event, a walk, to raise money for congenital heart disorders. Furthermore with Kappa Alpha Theta’s philanthropic committee, we planned a capture the flag tournament and dinner to raise money for abused and neglected children. I also had the opportunity to plan and attend a senior citizen prom for a community service club in high school. I had the duty of helping to invite various assisted living homes around the community, setting up venue ,and advertising the event.
I am passionate about social justice, particularly global poverty. In 2015, I, among other students in the Chicago suburbs raised $62,000 to build a dorm in Banteay Meanchey, Cambodia. We learned about the human trafficking situation and lack of education in Cambodia from a Willow Creek staff member who visited Cambodia. Over the course of a calendar year, I attended bi-weekly meetings for project updates and brainstorming with other student leaders. Then, I would bring back these ideas to my classmates and we planned fundraisers that would work well for our school population. My favorite fundraiser when we raised $700 by selling 18-inch pixy stix (sugar sticks). I never could have sold 700 giant sugar sticks on my own, especially in a one-month
I have been volunteering at various events to see how people get all excited for certain events. One event, in particular, was my school annual auction. If I remember correctly we had two-hundred and eighty guests come to our school. The end of the auction was one of the most eye-opening times within my teenage life. After eight girls performed a heartwarming poem to the guests, the auctioneer asked who wants to give money towards scholarships for these students. Arms went flying, and I can never forget that moment. I remember looking to my right and see a classmate in tears because not only did the guest donate, but our teachers did. It was then many of us noticed that they truly cared about us. If an auction regarding around the education of students can bring two-hundred and eighty people together, just imagine what can be done for the
For instance, Joe’s Fish Taco Nights is one of the events my husband Guy and I participate in every year during lent. A month before the event I get to design to flyer to promote the event. The six Friday before Good Friday we help cook fish tacos for the community. It is a wonderful event that brings the community and families together. We start at 3pm cutting cabbage, onions, tomatoes, and cheese. The volunteers then break into groups depending on their assignment. Guy and I are responsible to collect the money for the meals. We never turn a person away, but we do keep track of the meal we give away. During the evening various attendees request to donate a meal for a less fortunate person. All food and soups are donated by participating groups. The money raised is to benefit the vocations. Another event we love to donate our time to is the annual Knights of Columbus Spaghetti dinner. Two months before the dinner I create any flyers, tickets, and promotional materials. My husband Guy and I are in charge of making all the garlic bread for the dinner every year. Last year we used more than 27 loaves of French bread. First we cut the loafs open, butter both sides, add garlic powder, and sprinkle with parmesan cheese. After that we slice the bread into smaller pieces, place them onto the backing sheets and place them in the kitchen until the cooks are ready to bake them. We also invite family and friends to join use for the spaghetti dinner. The food is served by teenagers in need of community service hours for their catechism. Money raised benefits the youth catechism
A series of wildfires started by two careless teenagers dangerously spread through Gatlinburg, Tennessee and caused a lot of damage, even leading to the death of fourteen individuals. A church in the community burnt down and I felt the need to use my influence to aid that congregation. As president of the National Honors Society, I organized a series of hat days that involved students paying a dollar in order to wear a hat at school. It was a success and we managed to raise $218 which through the handiwork of my English teacher was quadrupled to
Hadley Jane Harper awoke from her failed pursuit at getting a satisfying night's sleep at 2:43 am. The red veins in her eyes were clear enough for anyone to spot as she reached for her purple glass that, at one point, was almost overflowing with ice cold water, but by now was a lukewarm temperature. With a fleeting look at her opened Advanced Psychology book spread across the floor along with what could have been hundreds of papers, Hadley turned to her goldfish, Axel and sighed. “Ugh! Am I ever going to finish this nonsense?” A single bubble came up from Axel’s mouth in response to the ridiculous question. “You’re right,” Hadley paused for a moment to take a deep breath and gather her bearings, “of course it’s possible for me to finish
