The Manhattan Project was the code name of the America’s attempt to construct an atomic bomb during World War II. It was named after the Manhattan Engineer District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, because a lot of it’s earlier research was done in New York City. An atomic bomb is a weapon that uses the energy from a nuclear reaction called Fission for its destruction.

In 1945, during the final movements of World War I, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. In 1939 World War 2 began, which set the Allies against the Axis powers in a war that spread worldwide. This was a time of destruction that later ended in 1945. Around this time, the Manhattan Project had just ended; this project was a secret United States program that focused on the making of an atomic bomb. Their main focus was to create a new weapon before other Axis powers did so.

During 1941 through 1945 a war had occurred in the Pacific between the Americans and the Japanese this war was called The Pacific Theater. This war was also being fought during the duration of another World War against Germany and Japan but on May 8, 1945 Germany surrendered to the allied powers leaving Japan to still be dealt with. However Japan would not surrender even after the major battles between the Americans and Japanese in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The allies began began postwar planning for future, as well as establishment of post-war order and peace treaties issues. America’s war wasn’t done yet as they were still fighting Japan, eventually pushing them back to their main island. When the Project arose the research was done in three different colleges, Columbia University, the University of Chicago and the University of California at Berkeley.
