It is now October 2017, ten months since Sheriff Hayden was sworn in as the Sheriff of Johnson County. It has been a long ten months since Sheriff Hayden was sworn in as the Sheriff of Johnson County. Reflecting back over the past several months, significant changes occurred, both positive and negative. I finalized my grievance against Captain O’Donnell and prepared to formally submit it to the Sheriff via my chain of command, Major Pfannenstiel. Ironically, the morning I prepared to submit the grievance, Sheriff Hayden reassigned numerous command staff members to other assignments. As it was, my frustration level reached its peak and I told Major Pfannenstiel I was ready to formally submit the grievance as even though he had previously instructed Captain O’Donnell to include me in communications, she continued her pattern of not doing so. As it was, after Major Pfannenstiel gave Major Reed a brief update of what had been taking place, Major Reed indicated he would handle the problem. While I did not partake in the conversation, within 30 minutes Major Reed had a two hour meeting with Captain O’Donnell. From her facial expression as she left the meeting, I could tell things did not go well for her and all Major Reed shared with me is that Captain O’Donnell was given very clear and specific instructions that she was not allowed to have any communication with the Personnel staff, other than Captain Newson. Thus, I begin a new chapter in Personnel with a new captain and a major I have worked previously worked for. As this new chapter is moving forward I’m forced to contemplate and evaluate what goals I aspire to achieve before my career in law enforcement comes to a conclusion. A few years back, I would have proclaimed being promoted to captain was my top goal although I no longer believe that to be the case. With where I am at in my career and the time I have left, I’m focused
