Paying college athletes is a hot topic between members of the NCAA. With all the money that college sports brings in, some people say that these athletes should get a portion of the money. I do not believe that college athletes should be paid. They already have scholarships that pay for their schooling, and giving these athletes money would only cause them to get into more problems away from their sport. This topic in particular sparks interest since I am interested in sports. When I first heard about college athletes being paid, I was shocked. The thought of all the money that would be gave to these athletes would be absurd. College athletes already have a history of getting into trouble off the field and giving them money will only add …show more content…
“But the players themselves don’t see any of that money, even as they risk career-ending injuries every time they step onto the court, field, or rink” (Morganteen, 2014). Reasons other than personal information is information that I would like to learn more about. As mentioned before, these athletes are already getting their education paid for. What other reasons would allow the NCAA to pay these individuals? One point as mentioned by Morganteen states that “The vast majority of college basketball players never make it to the pros, under 100 out of 5000 athletes make it to the professional level” (Morganteen, 2014). Lack of resources are among one of the problems that resides with this issue. When talking about whether these athletes should be paid or not comes down to opinions. Other than the amount that the NCAA makes, resources among this topic are limited. As of now, Sportscenter, NBC, and CBS are of the few companies that talk about this issue. The best way to let people hear about this topic is through word of mouth communication. People need to know about the pros and cons of giving college athletes money before forming an
College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College athletes are some of the hardest working people in the nation, having to focus on both school courses and sports. Because athletics take so much time, these student-athletes are always busy. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. The NCAA does not want to pay the athletes beyond scholarships, and it would be tough to work a new compensation program into the NCAA and university budgets. College athletes should be compensated in some form because they put in so much time and effort, generating huge amounts of revenue.
First, many college athletes risk getting terribly hurt every game. Also, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, also known as NCAA, is bringing in extra money from sports tournaments because of them, and finally, because if they were to get paid they could be able to support their families. Studies have shown that if these athletes got paid, they would do better in many of their classes. College sports have been popular since the 1850’s but since then the athletes have not been getting paid. College athletes should be paid to play the game that they have devoted lots of time into.
Due to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations no college athlete is able to receive any compensation or endorsement while participating in college athletics. These rules have long been challenged, however no changes have been made by the NCAA. With universities grossing close to $200 million a year college athletics has turned into one of the top industries in the world. The NCAA is a governing body of college athletics, but without people questioning the NCAA and demanding changes to the monopoly that the NCAA is nothing will happen to the unfairness to college athletes like it is currently.
“Paying student-athletes would provide athletes an incentive to stay in school and complete their degree programs, instead of leaving early for the professional leagues”. If players are paid to perform, they cover some, if not most, of their college tuition that loans or grants could not cover, but in addition they will want to complete their college degree. NCAA promotes themselves that all college-athletes are students first, athletes second. In the article “Should Student-Athletes Get Paid?,” “A university’s primary objective is to provide its students with a quality education that prepares them to function in the world as opposed to in college.” Although, without paying your prime source of revenue, colleges leave their athletes with the options of either not graduating or withdrawal as a result of financial problems. In blatant terms it seems that it should be seemingly simple for schools to pay their
There are many global issues that are a problem today, and college sports are involved in that category. College sports are popular around the world, but mainly in the United States. Every year the same question comes up about college athletes potentially being paid by their colleges. They should definitely not be paid. College athletes are spoiled while most are getting full scholarships full of benefits.
First, No college athletes should not be paid because Not all colleges have enough money to pay their athletes. Some colleges barely have enough money to pay for books and school supplies so if they start paying college athletes some schools will start going out of business and will close down and students From that College will go to another College and the same
If college athletes were to start being paid, many questions would start to surface. The big question that would pop up first is, “What sports get paid?” Statistics show that football and basketball are the major revenue sports that actually make money for their universities, while most other college sports do not. While football brings in on average the most revenue, basketball is close to second. Another question that may be asked is, “How will the money be split?” Like many others, the writer believes that the biggest question lies in which areas of competition would get paid. Famous Fab Five member Jalen Rose states that, “Every student athlete should be paid $2000 a year” (Salvador). However, if you do that, in fairness, would one pay a star football player and a star rowing team member the same amount of money? Or would a woman athlete get paid just as much as a male athlete? If this not the case then it becomes extremely unfair and would just cause controversy. Fairness is important when coming to this, especially the fairness between females and males. There are several different questions that need to be reviewed and that proves why college athletes should not be paid. It would cause absolute chaos and a plethora
Paying athletes would change the whole aspect of recruiting a great deal. Whatever school has the most money available would likely get the recruit. College athletes are not professionals, so they should not be treated accordingly. If the athletes were paid, it would turn the whole objective of a college upside down. Because of these reasons, college athletes should not be paid.
Should college athletes be paid? Let’s take a quick glance at the pros and cons of each perspective. For starters, in my opinion, yes, college athletes should get paid. What deserves debate, is the conversation of how to get this done. From my experience, in America, you get paid in proportion to the value you bring to the marketplace. College sports is one, if not the
Thousands of College athletes work as hard as they possibly can in their sports and don’t get rewarded for their talent. The NCAA has rules in place that will not allow the college athletes to be paid. Since the beginning of the NCAA, students playing a sport in college have never been paid. The only thing that the athlete’s have been given are scholarships that pay for their tuition and/or room and board. I think that College athletes should be paid because it is like a full time job, they earn millions for their school, and they don’t have the time to study like other students.
For years now there have been the argument if college athletes should be paid to play or not. It is an ongoing debate between many people including the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA), athletes, coach, and other various people. The has debate has gone far enough that a lawsuit has started over it. There are many arguments for college athletes being paid such as; the athletes do not have time to work, their images are being used without any type of pay, and how the NCAA and coaches make millions of dollars off of the players while the players do not make anything. On the flip side of this, arguments that the athletes should not be paid include; they get paid in other varies ways, the average college athletic department loses enough money already without paying the athletes, and the fact that not all college athletes are in school to become professional athletes anyhow so making money from their athletic abilities should not be an issue for them at all.
In college sports today there is an occurring issue on whether or not college athletes should be paid to play. This issue has been disputed since the NCAA was established in 1906. These athletes have made money for everybody involved with these schools, but they themselves have made nothing. The main reason these players have not acquired pay is because of the NCAA and their rules and regulations. College athletes should get paid because they are the main source of revenue for colleges. Also they should be paid, because some might be poor or have been injured and they need money to help their lives stay on track.
The NCAA has had debates before of whether or not they believe college athletes should get paid because often most of the students have been or are covered with scholarships that cover fees, meal plans and their tuition. Even though the
College athletes should not be paid because college is for learning not a job. Students go to college to advance on their learning not to go to work. Paying college athletes would also go against the point of the NCAA and people already have scholarships so why would they get
College athletes should be paid because of the hard work, dedication and effort they put into their respective sports. These athletes are a major source of income for their schools and they are not receiving a penny for it. These college athletes deserved to be paid, colleges are using these athletes to get money and they are never given anything but a pat on the back and a good job. College athletes work and train extremely hard to perform at the highest level possible. In most cases, they spend more time training and preparing for their sport than they actually do learning and studying. They put so much on the line to play and they get nothing in return. These college athletes literally make their schools millions of dollars every
