Essay Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

Athletes attending universities across the country spend long hours at their sport everyday, some spending hours equivalent to a full time job. The majority of athletes use their talents in order to receive their education for free or for a reduced fee. However, some college competitors use their time at a university as a vehicle to play professionally as a career. With the NCAA and university athletic departments making billions of dollars in revenue each year, a question has arisen. Should college athletes receive compensation for their play?

Many have different speculations on what’s right and not. The goal of almost every athlete is to see a brighter future of college sports, where every athlete gets paid. To get this started, my take on this whole situation is that college athletes do deserve to be paid. I mean they work their butts off for their college careers trying to balance school and their sport. The typical Division I college football player devotes 43.3 hours per week to his sport, 3.3 more hours than the typical American work week (Edelman).

Due to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations no college athlete is able to receive any compensation or endorsement while participating in college athletics. These rules have long been challenged, however no changes have been made by the NCAA. With universities grossing close to $200 million a year college athletics has turned into one of the top industries in the world. The NCAA is a governing body of college athletics, but without people questioning the NCAA and demanding changes to the monopoly that the NCAA is nothing will happen to the unfairness to college athletes like it is currently.

Why College Athletes Deserved To Be Paid College is expensive and college athletes should be paid to play in order to meet their financial needs as a student. I think that all college athletes should be allowed to be paid because professional athletes get paid to play the same sport. College athletes should get paid too if they make into the playoffs. Who gets the money if they win the championships the coaches, the school, etc? Either way, the athletes do not get paid for anything.

Colleges should be paying their athletes for their hard work and time in participating in the college sport.

How in today’s society is it equitable to have a person perform labor, benefit off of their actions and that person not being compensated? Each year over 400,000 collegiate student-athletes both male and female, compete on 3 different division levels nationwide. During the lifespan of these athletes’ careers a select few become the face of their respective universities, who in turn generate uncountable amounts of revenue. In Miami in 2011, 73 Miami Hurricane football players were hit with a booster scandal. These athletes blackmailed their boosters to get cars, money, vacations, and many other items. But, they are student athletes, which means they are students first. Many of the students, however, are only able to further their education by receiving some sort of scholarship in their sport. Even with these scholarships, students are not always able to fully cover the cost of their tuition, which may be driving some college athletes out of school early, or worse not going at all. The ongoing debate as to whether or not college athletes should be paid has certainly heated up in recent years. There are some people who realizes the amount of energy athletes put in playing the game argues that they should get paid.
