More than 460,000 college students are apart of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), meaning they are apart of college sports. College students are now more than ever involved in sports. There has been discrepancies on whether these athletes should be paid. College athletes should not be paid because most elite college athletes get sports scholarships, they aren’t professionals, and the NCAA is a non-profit organization. First and foremost, these college athletes should not be paid because most elite college athletes get sports scholarships. Some of the athletes almost get their full tuition paid for, or at least remarkably discounted. Over billions of dollars are given to athletes. In some cases, the average athletic scholarship exceeds the student’s tuition. For instance, Ohio State tuition is only $10,000 a year, however the average athletic scholarship is $17,856. Therefore, they are having their college tuition paid for, in addition to other perks. Can’t they wait to become professionals? …show more content…

While college is time to grow, learn, and mature, and whether that student wants to become a professional accountant or professional athletes when still in school. The college athlete should see the opportunity to play college sports as a vehicle to a higher education and rank in their sport. For example, a very high percentage of student athletes graduate without having any student loans. Most other students, however, certainly accumulate these. For those student athletes who still have trouble with money after all of this, there is the NCAA Student Assistance Fund, which will help in the case of difficulty paying for the cost of attendance.The student is still an amateur. It doesn’t matter how many touchdowns they scored, or how many three-pointers they’ve made, they are not professionals, and they should not make professional
