Think of a time when the black society was still getting used to the word freedom and the white society hated the thought of it. The book Song of Solomon, written by Toni Morrison in 1977, takes place in Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior. The book emphasizes the racial and social tensions between blacks and whites between the 1930s and the 1960s. The Dead family goes through many phases of self-discovery throughout the story. In an effort to hide his southern, working class roots, Macon Dead, an upper-class northern black businessman tries to insulate his family from the danger and despair of the rank and file blacks with whom he shares the neighborhood. Another example of a misnomer is the local white hospital. It was called Mercy Hospital, but refused to deliver babies of black mothers. The name "No Mercy Hospital" spread through the colored society. The year 1931 was the first time that a black woman was allowed to give birth in the hospital's wards and not on its front steps. At the sight of a local black insurance agent's leap from a nearby building the black woman went into labor and was admitted to the hospital. The reason for the hospital's generosity to that particular woman was not the fact that she was the only child of the only Negro doctor. Besides, the doctor had been dead a long time by 1931. It must have been Mr. Smith's leap from the roof over their heads that made them admit her. In any case, whether or not the little insurance agent's conviction that he could fly contributed to the place of her delivery, it certainly contributed to the time. Under this particular event the woman was allowed inside the doors of "No Mercy Hospital".

Another case of misnomers is the way that the family name of Macon Dead came about and was passed on for generations. When freedom came to all blacks in 1869, Macon's father had to register with the Freedmen's Bureau. He couldn't read and couldn't even sign his name.
