Change is a fact of organizational life that develops in response to interpersonal, cultural, environmental, and other external factors that fluctuate and change for various reasons. Employees can display varying levels of resistance ranging from aggressive resistance to apathy (Spector, 2012). Resistance is a concern because it undermines the effectiveness of the change implementation process, but there are tools available which leaders can utilize to reduce this possibility. The essential tools will be discussed in this paper along with the reasons for utilizing them in a change implementation process.

Resistance Understanding The leader’s understanding of employees’ resistance will affect how they attempt to change employees’ behaviors towards the proposed change. Research recommends that a study of the culture which dictates the rules under which employees develop their behaviors should be conducted. Change agents can develop a clear perception of employees’ resistance through this process (Huang & Huang, 2009). As an example, if the culture has dictates changes in the past where employees have dealt with uncertainty about their personal situations, their resistance might be based on the fear of the unknown with the proposed change. Leaders can address this fear by keeping employees involved in the communication loop. In addition, leaders can tell employees what they will lose if they fail to change (Cialdini, 2013). Employees receive this information from an authoritative figure that should have the answers.
Mutual Engagement Mutual engagement is a critical component in overcoming resistance to change. It focuses on the need to communicate with stakeholders about the change and encourage their commitment to the process. Leaders must create a dialogue with employees.
