After having a stand in Saks she headed after Neimans. Lauder wanted to sell her products at high end stores because she wanted to have a high end brand that was low cost. After some persistence she scored Neimans.
Lauder was booming but she was still not at her goal. She wanted to be a cosmetic titan like Revlon and Chanel. She needed something to bring her into the big leagues. Lauder had one more store left to conquer; The Galeries Lafayette. This was the European Neimans. After months of persistence she still couldn’t win them over. Finally she got them after being sneaky. During an expose at the Grand Lafayette, she “accidentally” spilled some of her youth dew on the floor. Everyone smelled it and asked where they could buy it. A few years later, while pregnant with her child, she felt the need to wear jewelry to make herself feel confident while in maternity clothes. Annie Easley was born April 23, 1933 in Birmingham, Alabama. Born to Mary Melvina Hoover and Samuel “Bird” Johnson. Annie and her older brother were raised by their single mother in Birmingham. Starting from 5th grade all the way through 12th, Annie attended parochial schools. Parochial schools were schools that related only to a church theme. She attended the Holy Family High School. While in high school Annie thought that becoming a nurse or a teacher were the only jobs that were open to African American women. Since Annie didn’t intend on becoming a teacher, she intended on becoming a nurse. Towards the end of high school, Annie decided to purse becoming a pharmacist. She would end up deciding to purse pharmaceutical medicine while graduating valedictorian of her class. After graduating high school valedictorian, Annie Easley attended the Roman Catholic University where she majored in pharmaceuticals. Annie spent two years in the program. The Roman Catholic University would later be called the Xavier University of Louisiana.

Liz Claiborne was born in Brussels, Belgium on March 31st 1929, which was nine years after the Women’s Rights Movement ended in America. She had exposure to art in her childhood from her father who taught her to appreciate art and her mother who taught her to sew. Liz Claiborne spent her early years in Brussels and became a bilingual person who could speak French and English fluently. In 1939, she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana with her parents due to the threats from Nazis (Bernstein 1; “Liz Claiborne’ Biography”).
Cosmetics: In 1909 Gordon Selfridge had opened the first cosmetics counter to allow women to ‘try before you buy.’ By the 1920s, every pharmacy and department store in the world included makeup counters. The previous stigma attached to makeup was gone and women felt at ease scrutinizing the latest powders, vanishing creams, pan sticks, lipsticks and mascaras (or mascaros as they were known in the 1920s).
After working day in and day out, she finally was able to open a little boutique on fifth avenue that she named ‘Couture du Jour’. After a while, many well known celebrities began shopping at her boutique and wearing her designs, she became a very famous name in the fashion industry.
Growing up she seen her mother and father work hard. This gives her a great ethic background to always continue on no matter what happens.
