Have you ever wanted a bad memory erased? Is love erasable? These questions are attacked head on in the wonderfully complex drama Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. After working together on the film Human Nature, director Michael Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman discussed the possibility whether or not they would have their memory erased of a bad relationship should the opportunity present itself (dvdtalk). Out of that discussion a movie idea was formulated, pitched to a studio, and a film was created showing the potential impact of doing so. While at the beach we are introduced to Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), a gregarious impulsive woman. Despite all appearances that the main characters are total opposites, a connection between Joel and Clementine is sparked. It appears as though theirs is not a chance encounter and they know one another.
Nearly two years after they meet, Joel goes to the library where Clementine works, and he is struck that she doesn’t appear to remember who he is, and she is now dating another guy. A saddened Joel discovers that Clementine had him erased from her mind at Lacuna Inc., a firm people use if they would like a relationship erased from their mind. Grief stricken, Joel in return schedules an appointment to have Clementine erased from his mind. For the procedure Joel must gather any item that refers back to Clementine, such as books, pictures, journals, gifts etc. The procedure works by having the patient focus on the items they bring in, the technicians find the memory in his/her brain and erase it.
A majority of the film takes place in the mind of Joel as he tries to find a way to hold on to his memories of Clementine while the employees from Lacuna work to erase the memories. The audience is magically placed into the mind of Joel as he is having his memory erased of Clementine. The flashbacks begin, transporting the audience on a journey in their relationship but in reverse. Director
