"Life, Success, Work Ethic, & Priorities" is a documentary YouTube video on Will Smith by Jefriedom Polanco. The video is a compilation of excerpts from interviews with Will Smith throughout his career, and it highlights his perspective, attitude and approach to life. Early in the video, Will describes a cornerstone of his philosophy, his "Homebase". This philosophy was so important to Will, he, along with friend Jeff Townes, aka "DJ Jazzy Jeff", titled their 1991 album "Homebase". Describing the meaning behind the term, Smith says "...we Felt that how important it is when you are trying to do other things in your life, how important that 'Homebase' is. To have someplace, not necessarily you call home, but someplace in your heart, you feel home." (Polanco, 2013) I believe we all have a Homebase of some sorts. My homebase resides within me, a place where I can step back from a situation, or even myself, and look at my life more subjectively. …show more content…
It was 1992, I had saved $1250, and I decided to take my brother up on an offer to move from California to Arizona and rent a room from him for a few months for a change of pace and location while I thought things throughout my future. During that time I looked at many different career paths, I thought about joining the Air Force, working construction, but eventually came to the conclusion that furthering my education with a degree would be my best option. My parents had offered to let me live at home while I was in school, so I thought I would stay with my brother for another couple months, then head back to California. A couple weeks after coming to this conclusion we received a call from our parents telling us my dad had been diagnosed with a brain
The story revolves around SAN ANTONIO, A grandson of Mexican immigrants, and a former mayor of this town, Henry G. Cisneros has spent years trying to make the dream of homeownership come true for low-income families. Capitalizing on a housing expansion he helped set free, he joined the boards of a major builder, KB Home, and the largest mortgage lender in the nation. For the three years he was a director at KB Home, Mr. Cisneros says his mistake was not the greed that afflicted many of his counterparts in banking and housing; it was unwavering belief.
In his writing, A Practical Companion to Ethics, Anthony Weston explains people are more judgmental and it causes a lot more problems than solutions. Anthony Weston feels Ethics requires us to be mindful thinkers, because it helps fight unjust prejudgment. I personally feel this could help fix court systems, federal, and state wide corruption. Most importantly being a mindful thinker could help businesses. There are so many reasons that could fall under Anthony’s theory. Getting to know the author and his work. I feel his mindful thinking is to reach out to others and interact with more people in an expressive way. Weston believes this will help our community progress in a positive manner towards others. I think he feels ethics requires us
The night of December 9, 2011 was easily one of the worst of my life. It all started before I woke. At around 2:30 in the morning, my grandfather (Pepaw), who resided in Keyser, West Virginia, had fallen very ill. My step grandmother called my father to let him know that his father needed emergency surgery and asked him to travel to Keyser Hospital as soon as possible. After the first surgery was completed the doctors at the the Hospital determined that he needed an additional emergency surgery that they were not equipped to preform. At 5:30 A.M. he was Medevaced to Morgantown, West Virginia for the next surgery. After he arrived, the Morgantown Physicians assessed his vitals, and in consultation with the Keysers doctors, they determined that Pepaw was not strong enough to undergo the second
As I sat on the couch getting ready for the first day back at school, I heard the phone in the kitchen ring. I stood up to go answer it and I heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs. My mother was running down the stairs to answer it just in case it was one of her work calls. I noticed that her voice started to crack as if she was going to cry and the smile that she once had on her face had disappeared. The person on the other end of the phone was my Uncle Dylan from California calling to let us know that Aunt Liz had died in a car wreck. We were so devastated but little did we know she left me $12k. A couple days later I received a letter in the mail saying that I had to use it to help pay for my tuition. I am looking to attend the nursing program at Lindenwood, Missouri State, or St. Louis University.
It was a beautiful, sunny day in South Florida. I was six years old, playing by the pool with my new puppy. I loved swimming in the pool almost every day after school. I also enjoyed going out on our boat after school or crossing the street and going to the beach. My father came home one evening with some interesting news. Now, I do not remember exactly how I felt about the news at that time, but it seemed like I did not mind that much. He had announced that we were going to move back to my birth country, Belgium. I had been living in Florida for five years and it was basically all I had known so I did not know what to expect. I had to live with my mom at first, and then my sister would join us after she graduated high school and my father
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to act on behalf of the interests of young children. A man runs into a building full of people and starts shouting about a gas leak in the walls and that everyone needs to evacuate. He´s frantic and dishevelled, and a bit unorganized. No one moves. Now, take the same guy and put him in a police uniform or calm him down, put him in new clothes, and give him a badge. Now, everyone’s rushing out the door. Why is everyone suddenly so willing to trust a random stranger? This occurs because of a thing called ethos. Ethos is the appeal to character. It is one of Aristotle’s three ingredients of persuasion known as logos, the appeal to logic, pathos, the appeal to emotion, and ethos, arguably the most important and persuasive part of an argument.
Growing up, I have always looked up to my father. I wanted to be like him when I was older. I wanted to be able to achieve everything that my father had. He was my role model. When I was about 8 or 9 my parents decided they wanted to move up to Washington. (I lived in Arizona at the time) My older sister and I were devastated. We had lived out whole lives in this house and had many good memories but our parents wanted us to leave it behind? yet, we moved anyways. Now that I look back, if we wouldn’t have moved, none of this would have ever happened. Washington. The great northwest. Let me tell you, Washington and Arizona are two very different places. The one good part about moving was that I got my own
Throughout these three months my family was not financially prepared for the medical bills. Each day I could see the frustration in my parent’s eyes. My mother took a leave of absence because I couldn’t do anything by myself. I lost motion in my right arm which prevented me from being able to do daily living tasks. Three months later I was sent to the Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora Colorado. After months of having no results, I finally had an answer. On September 21, 2012 I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. This meant that I need treatment every month, and my parents and I would have to travel to Aurora Colorado every month. This was a very hard task because my mother had already stopped working, and my father would have to take days of from work to travel with me to Colorado. Having been diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain struck my family more than anything in the world. There was nothing I could do to help. Every six months my family and I would on travel to Colorado for my treatment. My treatment consisted of epidurals every six months for the last two years. At this point in time my family didn’t have medical insurance. Since we were drowning in medical bills my father had to find a better job with medial
The life of prisoners some may never know. There are those who care not to know what goes on behind that wired fence. We find that some people that are convicted of crimes that they did not commit. Some people would rather turn their heads to what actually happens in a prison institution, because they feel it is no concern of theirs. Innocent women and men face a disaster in life when they find their selves incarcerated in such facility as these. The treatment in prison facilities toward prisoners with health issues or those who develop health concerns that
The week of finals on my father suffered a traumatic brain injury. He fell down the stairs and instead of going to the hospital he went to bed causing further damage. The next morning my mother found my dad having seizers and coughing up blood. He was taken to the hospital where he had to have brain surgery to relieve the pressure
Last June my mom lost her job of 30 years without any notice. She literally walked in the office at 8 am, met with her bosses at 8:30, was told her position at the bank was no longer available because they were trying some new things, and was packed and out the door by 9. Since she was making a pretty decent living at the bank, getting benefits and insurance, we were hopeless when she lost her job. At the time, both of us were covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance. I had just finished my series of Invisalign and had about 4 more months to pay them off, my mom had some medical bills to pay, and we both had eye glasses, contacts, and prescriptions. Even though I was working part-time and she was selling Avon that was not enough. We had
An ethical principle revolves around confidentiality, informed consent, autonomy, nonmaleficence justice and fairness and beneficence (Kinicki & Williams, 2016). In this part, I will only discuss the concepts of justice and fairness has my ethical principle. I will be discussing its pro and cons, and before that, I will vividly address the concept of justice and fairness about the corporate world. Justice is a broad concept of ethical principle that involves equality, fairness, and impartiality. In simple terms, it is the concept of being fair to people. Justice is broadly divided into social and distributive justice. In the corporate world, distributive justice entails treating an employee right and equally independent of ethnic group, culture,
My parents finally able to buy a house after 8 years we came to the United States; it was a good news but after that, my parents were short on money. When I came home one weekend, I heard my parents arguing about not having enough money to pay for the bills. Therefore, I decided to find a job to work during the winter break and help my parents pay the bills. It was a week before final exams when I was really stressed out about finding a job for the winter break and have to study for finals at the same. I applied to more than ten jobs did not get a call from any of them. That was the most memorable mental breakdown moment that I can recall since I started college. After waited for two days and did not get a call from any of the places that I applied, I went back to old employer where I worked during the summer and asked for a job. Luckily, he was hiring at time and was willing to hire me back. After all, I was able to work for 4 weeks during the winter break and helped my parents paid the
What does one call a place where they feel safe? A place where one is surrounded by loved ones? A place where one can forget the worries of the world for even a brief moment. A place where no matter what happens, they will always have a place to return to. They have the deepest of connections with those that live there; connections that they know will never be severed no matter what happens. That is home. Home can be defined as where a person lives or has a permanent residence, but it is more than that when pondering on the emotional connection it has with the heart. A common phrase that is constantly used is “there is no place like home”. It is not because a person misses their previous residence, but due to the many qualities it possesses that could possibly never be found anywhere else. Home is not simply a place where one lives, but a place where love, contentment, and tranquility are abound.
