Ethical Considerations The human service profession requires a high degree of ethical considerations when working with clients. Ethics are thoughtful professional lists of do’s and don’ts for our profession (Ivey & Ivey & Zalaquett, 2016). When clients come to see a human service worker it is usually during a traumatic time in their lives, during these times the human service professional should help the client ethically over come the trauma. When conducting an interview there are many ethical considerations the helper must keep in mind especially when working with clients of diverse cultures. As a helper, we must keep in mind that our clients may or may not be of our culture or share our same values, in fact we may come across clients …show more content…
Countertransference is when the therapist’s unconscious emotional responses to a client that produce a distorted perception of the client’s behavior (Corey & Corey, 2016). Regarding countertransference, I think that interviewers should strive to work with all types of clients; in a perfect world this would be the case. Helpers may come into connect with certain clients that may arouse personal feelings that may hinder the clients care. Countertransference manifests in many forms: being over protective with client, treating clients in benign ways, rejecting a client, needing constant reinforcement and approval, seeing yourself in your clients, developing sexual or romantic feelings, giving advice, and developing a social relationship with clients (G. Corey, M. Corey, C. Corey & Callanan, 2015). If at anytime a counselor feels that these manifestations are occurring than a possible termination and referral may be in the best interest of the client. The analyst experiencing countertransference should rid himself of these feelings by having further analysis himself (Reidbord, 2010). We as professional should know that we must seek help and figure out why we are having these reactions towards the client and figure out ways to overcome …show more content…
With experience the helper will fall into their style of interviewing. The more a helper conducts interviews the greater their interview skills become. A new human service professional may be competent to work with clients but must rely heavily on their supervisors until they can rely of their experience. The diversity of clients will also increase the helper’s experience allowing their competence to increase as a result. Each person you work with will have a unique style of communicating (Ivey & Ivey & Zalaquett, 2016). Learning a client’s unique communication style is necessary in an interview because the helper must ensure that they can communicate successfully with the client, the client must be
Professional boundaries, in human services, are essential to helping clients and upholding the standards of the profession. Human service professionals provide several different services and are often faced with ethical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas are a major reason professional boundaries are established as they protect both the helper and the individual seeking help. Boundaries are not just rules that we enforce with clients, they are essentially an understanding of how we interact with people, both, professionally and personally. Boundaries are crucial if you want to have an effective relationship with the individual you are helping. Professional boundaries set the structure of the relationship and provide a framework in which you will
When looking at ethical dilemmas in human services one must be able identify and address the dilemma properly. Within the module for this week I am to evaluate three different dilemma scenarios and describe how I would approach each. In addition, I will be identifying what steps in the evaluation process I have used to make my decision on each ethical dilemma.
Within this assignment I will explore the ways in which I relate to others. I will identify any barriers or difficulties which could affect my ability to relate to others and therefore have an adverse effect on my role as a helper. Egan (1994) states that to be a fully developed helper, a key component is self awareness. He also suggests that there can be a “shadow side” to helping, which can adversely affect the outcome of the helping process.
If you are unable to build this rapport, you will go nowhere with a client that is either too embarrassed or not confident enough in your ability to help them.
When I entered this class I did not know anything about ethics or what it meant. I learned so many thing that it would take to long to list them all. I do understand the Ethics Code and the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals. That is one think I will have to always have with me and if I need to have a cheat sheet to look back on as I move forward. My biggest challenge was my grammar as I need to continue to work on this through out my life. I learned this was a problem for me through my assignments but am working on it. I hope some day it will come natural for me. This class was my biggest challenge as in terms of a grade. Because of this I learned that I have things to work on to improve myself moving forward.
The helper will use different skills to help the client to tackle the problem. "The clients takes responsibility on their identify issues and building themselves up to accomplish
As a social worker many problems may arise because of the constant grey area of either letting your personal values interfere with your professional opinion. It is essential to provide your client with information and tools to help them succeed and overcome their problems. Following the core values is essential to being a resourceful, competent social worker. In some cases, core values are in conflict. In a situation where more than one core value is in conflict it is considered an ethical dilemma (Hick, 2009). It’s not guaranteed that a perfect solution will arise, therefore one of the core values is subsided because the other has more of an impact on the client.
There are many ways in which social workers can avoid ethical dilemmas. In regards to the Jones case I will explain five ethical dilemmas. I will explain what 3 core values could have benefitted the Jones family and I will give three strategies I will use to practice ethical behavior in my field of social work in the future.
The readings fir this week in Clara Hill’s “Helping Skills”, particularly chapters 7, 8 and 9, discuss how helpers can authentically attend observe and listen to client’s thoughts and feelings. Hill spends a considerable amount of time exploring verbal and non-verbal feedback the helper gives to the client. This section was of particular interest to me due to a concern to be at a loss of words when a client says something that causes me to be unsure how to continue.
I can consistently identify the concept of countertransference when observing and analyzing practice activities. Countertransference is an emotional reaction from the social worker to the client. As social workers we often times spend a great deal of time with client allowing us to know a great amount of information about the client, which can allow the social worker to become emotionally involved with a client. There are many warning signs that a social worker should evaluate frequently
Milten Erikson emphasized the vital need to enter the client’s world and not to drag them into ‘your’ way of thinking. We need to learn their language, their perspectives and
There is a pressing need for a high level of worker/client boundary identification when working within a client population, however realizing a conflict of interest scenario is vitally important when facing a dual relationship with a client. There are so many issues that are faced by a human service professional, explaining all of them may be difficult. In this field there are issues such as burnout, secondary trauma, compassion satisfaction, dual relationships, and boundary issues. (Reamer, F. (2012). As human services professional or social workers there is a code of ethics. In statement 6 of the code of ethics, it states human services experts must be mindful that in their associations with customers/clients power and status are
Human services is a profession developed in response to the direction of human needs and human problems in the 1960's (Taylor,2015) Characterized by an appreciation of human beings in all of their diversity, human services offers assistance to its clients within the context of their communities and environments (Taylor,2015) The educator of Human service professional, guide to promote and motivate the distinctive values and characteristics of human services. Therefore, human service professionals sustain integrity and ethics of the job, encourage clients, communities, and magnify their own professional development. Some of the basic values of the human services profession include respecting the dignity and happiness of clients; promoting self-determination; respecting cultural differences; advocating for social equality; and to act with integrity, honor, kindness and fairness. Human service professionals utilize these standards in ethical and professional decision making (O’Brien,2010) Conflicts can occur from the code and laws, policies in the work place, cultural practices, credentialing boards, and personal beliefs (O’Brien,2010) A Human service professional should display their ethical-decision making during situations to assure they’re making careful choices.
Ethical issues in general, regardless of the profession or field one is in are inevitable. Social workers understand the value base of the profession and its value base of the profession and its ethical standards, as well as relevant laws and regulations that may impact practice at the micro and macro level (Segal, 2016). Although social workers are trained and understand ethical standards does not prevent them to one-day face ethical issues. According to (Reamer, 2014) we have embarked on a new period, one which few of us, he suspected, could have anticipated. Today’s social workers can provide services online or via video counseling or text messages to clients they never meet in person. They may receive Facebook friend request from clients or former clients that lead to boundary challenges. These boundary challenges as Reamer categorizes them are part of what he calls the Digital period. “Issues steadily arise even among segments of the population that one would expect to
It is quite remarkable to see the skills I have learnt put into action with individuals I encounter in my every day dealings. By implementing the basic counselling skills learnt, it has aided me in being a better person and also laid the foundations for my future career. Many skills were used in a variety of situations in the past quarter of a year, however, only a brief description of a few will be discussed below. It is simpler to learn a core skill from a textbook however it is more complex to apply that skill in practise; every individual is different and so are each of their issues. It is important as a student to familiarise ourselves with the key skills needed to become a successful skilled helper. In the beginning we are taught
