Films are a reflection of the events and occurrences in society. It’s no secret that racism is a moral issue that has been around for many years, however, one of the films that have depicted various ethical issues in racism is American Denial: The Truth is Deeper than Black and White. Some of the issues brought to our attention throughout this film include racial profiling and discrimination against those who are labeled as blacks, which in itself is very discriminating. In the modern times, some of the most critical and ethical issues that a film would focus on include but are not limited to are police brutality against the Black Americans, ethical discrimination in the workplace, as well as the neglect of racism observed within the health care sector. Evidently, race and racism continue to be implicated in various sectors where there are ethnic and cultural minority groups. American Denial is a great film in relation to the racial problems facing America and provides an insight into the moral lessons, but one of the most intriguing questions it seeks to ask is that is it morally acceptable of hating someone because of his or her skin colour or ethnical background. The film is focused around the dominant attitudes of racism in society which is primarily evident in the favouritism of whites in the perspective of law. The film features how a black man feared this discrimination so greatly he took the law into his own hands by punishing two white men the way two black men would be punished. The movie “Crash”, by Director and Writer Paul Haggis, follows 8 ethnically diverse families/ individuals facing the struggle of modern day racism and stereotypes created and faced in modern Los Angeles, California. These individuals take the roles of individuals living their daily lives within Los Angeles, California while facing stereotypes. The cast portrays: 2 caucasian white male police officers, an African American director and his wife, a white district attorney and his wife, a Persian immigrant family, and a Hispanic father whose occupation is a locksmith. The scene chosen from this film involves the police officers (Officer Ryan and Officer Hanson) pulling over the African American Director (Cameron Thayer) and his wife (Christine Thayer) at a traffic stop. This scene establishes two different types of theoretic sociological concepts of Thomas Theorem and cognitive dissonance.

These horrible issues do not affect one race, sexes, class, ethnicity, or age group; these issues affect all races, both genders, all ethnicities, and all age groups. For this film analysis, I have chosen to discuss the racism portrayed throughout a three-time Oscar award winning movie called Crash.
The Shadow of Hate helps illustrate the evergoing history of racism that is portrayed within the United States. It emphasizes that since the beginning of United States history to the present day, racism still remains a critical topic that many individuals need to be informed about. While this film talks about racism in the United States as a whole, it goes deeper in pinpointing specific racial groups that received the cruelest treatment throughout U.S. history. Once finishing the film, I found myself mesmerized by the fascinating stories and clear depiction on how the severity of racism has had an impact on the past as well as how it will influence the future. It truly shows that racism is still prominent in society, considering people from the past condoned to this type of behavior. When finding the points made throughout the film, I was able to categorize them and look at them through all three sociological perspectives- the interactionist, the functionalist, and the conflict paradigms-to understand the deeper meaning behind them.

As soon as I read the prompt for this journal, the recent movie Get Out immediately popped into my head. As an avid cinephile, I was quick anxiously awaiting the release of the film. The wait was well worth it, as Jordan Peele’s Get Out exceeded all of my expectations and is certainly one of my favorite movies for the time being. What makes this movie so tremendous is the portrayal of race. Media is extremely influential in our beliefs, and film is no exception. Get Out approaches the sensitive topic of racism in current society, but with an extremely unique twist that provokes thoughtfulness. It is difficult to fully explain without completely spoiling the film, but the way the struggle between race and class is portrayed is both horrifying and eye-opening.

Movies and entertainment outlets speak volumes about the current state of a nation’s culture. Cinematic creations in the United States allow small voices to be heard and controversial issues to be addressed. However, a repetitive and monumental issue continues to be addressed, yet continues to persist in our 21st century culture, racial inequalities. Since the inception of the United States, black men and women alike have been disenfranchised at the hands of the “white man” in America. Instead of continuing the conversation today, the issue is continually silenced referencing the successes and achievements of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th century. Nonetheless, an unfortunate reality looms upon this great land; racially based systems and structures continue to exist in 2015 the in United States. This paper synthesizes three films focused on racial inequalities in different time periods. Separate but Equal (1991), Selma (2015), and Crash (2005) illustrate how influential the Civil War amendments are, while serving as an uncanny reminder of how the racial prejudices during the 20th century continue to exist in our great nation today. Needless to say our nation has made great strides, but still has a long way to go.
For many centuries racism has being an ongoing problem and occurrence in many societies, especially in America. Many different measures have been taken to try and diminish the racism that clearly infests this beloved country, but none have ever truly worked. Although these measures have never effectively worked to erase racism out of our society as a whole, some have opened people's’ eyes in creative ways to understand that it is no joke. One measure that has somewhat worked is through media and the arts such as cinema, literature, and paintings. An example of cinema is Jordan Peele’s movie, “Get Out” that portrays racism through a sense of horror that captivates a viewer's mind to see and understand the underlying theme of it all. “Get Out” is about a young African-American man named Chris who falls for a young Caucasian woman named Rose. Together they are going up to meet Rose’s family who put on an act to make it seem like they are somewhat normal, but in reality lure young African-Americans into their home every year to auction them off to a group of older white people so they can use their bodies for pseudo-immortality. Peele’s horrific movie “Get Out” opens a viewer's eyes and mind to the different concepts of racism and how brutal and unjust it is to people of color.

Moreover, as the stories go on and events develop, it becomes possible to see how characters start to have changes in their perspective and attitude towards each other, either in a good or a bad way. The population of the United States of America has been one of mixed race since its very beginning. Boatload upon boatload of enslaved Africans provided a labor force which would fuel the American South’s economy for many years, until national abolition and the subsequent civil rights movement created a primarily biracial population of blacks and whites. The US has come a long way since those days, and today every child born into the US is taught from an early age the evils of racism and the shameful actions committed by slave-owning US citizens in the past. From textbooks to televisions, the modern USA seemingly works tirelessly to teach its population that discrimination by race is wrong and that all races are equal. This has led to a great national complacence among whites, and a widespread belief that the US has mostly eradicated racial prejudices. But it is not so, and despite a population almost entirely composed of people who would not consider themselves racists, racism still pervades in the US. In many cases modern racism occurs at the hands of whites who almost absolutely are completely unaware of their discriminatory actions. In the films “Frozen River” and “The Visitor” racism was touched on repeatedly and played an evident part in the messages they were trying to portray.
