This paper is going to discuss the ethical considerations when working with a person that has disabilities. Being ethical is a must for any professional. If you want to be successful, you have to have good ethics. When being in a field like mental health, ethics are almost taken to another level. Being ethical not only helps the professional keep their job, but it helps the client through therapy as well. When counseling clients, counselors will come across a wide variety of clients and problems/difficulties that they may have. Some of these difficulties are actual disorders and disabilities that they are going to be living with for the rest of their lives so their therapy is crucial to help them function daily. There are several different …show more content…
No matter what though, we want to give our clients the power to make their own decisions and not choose for them. There is what is called Supported-Decision Making. "Supported decision-making is a process by which a third party assists or helps an individual with an intellectual or cognitive disability to make legally enforceable decisions for oneself"(Devi, 2013). For those that cannot communicate clearly, they may have someone assisting them with their communication. For Supported-Decision Making, there are a few different components. There is the client themselves which makes them the ultimate decision maker; the person there helping them to communicate whom goes over the issues with them, but overall it is in place for the client to make their own decisions and increases their ability to do so. This mechanism helps the client express their own autonomy which is very important. To the best of their ability and for as much as we can, we as professionals, or future professionals, should allow any client to express self-determination. Clients that can communicate effectively are going to ask us for direct advise, but we cannot tell them what to do exactly. All we can do is give them all the information and options they have without withholding any information. . "Even if the 'craziness' of a particular option is not readily apparent to the client, it would not necessarily be unethical for the counselor deliberately to steer the client away from a maladaptive course of action"(Counseling for Effective Decision Making). We can guide clients without pushing them in one direction. As long as we are not influencing their overall decision, it is
Ethical dilemmas are a struggle for all human service professionals such as discrimination, displaying empathy and recognizing a client’s unmet needs. Discrimination is the knowledge or carelessness of destroying another’s self-esteem by focusing on their disability. Overcoming discrimination for many individuals can be a battle that they may sometimes succumb to without proper assistance and failure of the worker to apply the ethical standards properly. In the National Organization of Human Services Handbook listed in the responsibility to the Community and Society section statement seventeen is found, “Human service professionals provide services without discrimination or preference based on age, ethnicity, culture, race, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status.” (NOWS, Adopted 1996)

Inclusion refers to putting into practice all the principles of clinical mental health counseling. According to 2014 ACA Code of Ethics, C.5. Nondiscrimination, counselors do not condone or engage in discrimination against prospective or current clients, students, employees, supervisors, or research participants based on age, culture, disability, ethnicity, race, religion/spirituality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital/partnership status, language preference, socioeconomic status, immigration status, or any basis prescribed by law. A mental health counselor can combine all the principles of mental health counseling during therapy. Inclusion shows that the counselor is equipped with the right tools and possess all the ingredients necessary for the successfully treatment of the client.
According to the American Counseling Association (ACA, 2014) Code of Ethics, ethical principles are based on a set of values that include autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity. These ethics apply to all types of counseling including both group and individual therapy; however, different aspects of these ethical guidelines must be considered based on the therapeutic approach. This paper will identify several of these ethical issues as they relate specifically to group counseling, while also evaluating how these differences compare to ethical guidelines within an individual approach. Based on this information, a final analysis will be provided on when therapists should choose group versus individual for a client.

Although the counselor-client confidentiality agreement exists and must be held with utmost importance, it is imperative for professional therapists and counselors to remain cognizant of the limitations to this rule. Confidentiality must be at the very core of the therapeutic relationship in order for the rehabilitative process to be successfully effective, which is the cornerstone of the counseling profession. When trust is broken or the confidentiality has been compromised, providing that breaking this agreement falls within its limitations, the expectancy of failure of the relationship is likely to ensue (Capuzzi & Gross, 2011). In this paper, I will attempt to
The second part of this paper focuses on a possible ethical struggle I may encounter on my path to becoming a professional counselor. I think that the ethical code I may struggle with the most is code A.10.e Bartering. The code states “Counselors may barter only if the bartering does not result in exploitation or harm, if the client requests it, and if such arrangements are an accepted practice among professionals in the community. Counselors consider the cultural implications of bartering and discuss relevant concerns with clients and document such agreements in a clear written contract.” (American Counseling Association, 2014). I feel that bartering would be difficult but possibly necessary with today’s economy. My main concern is that the

When dealing with ethical standards, the book of Psalms comes to mind. David instructs to allow “integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you Psalms 25:21. It is with integrity and intentionality that counselors shall use when working with at risk youth. Some ethical issues to consider when counseling a child is: a) it is illegal to contribute to the delinquency of a minor; such as providing drugs or engaging in sexual liaisons; b) duty to report child abuse; depending on state laws’ c) practitioners have a duty to report minor with a STDs/AIDs, sexual active or seeking abortions; d) duty to report adolescent’s suicide; e) duty to warn a third party regarding a client’s mean to harm another via cyber stalking as well (ACA, 2014; McWhirter et al., 2013). A practitioner must be twice as aware when working with at risk youth.
A therapist has many decisions to make when a client walks through their doors for his counseling session. First, the counselor must greet the patient and assess a baseline behavior and his goals for counseling. Among this, as a future therapist, my role is to be an educator for my clients so they may be best equipped to go through life with a handle on their mental distress and illness. Beginning with a client, uncovering what has worked in their treatment, what has not worked out so well are key points in how to explore counseling options. Afterwards, I must properly educate my clients on his diagnosis(es). With as many “medical” websites as there are today, I want to ensure he understand his diagnoses from psychiatric research rather than the questionable information on these websites. In addition, clients most likely need guidance in how to navigate difficulties in life and balancing the stress they face in day to day life. Education also comes into play with uncovering what coping skills my client has been utilizing. If they are negative coping skills, such as
An apprehension I have as I entered into the counseling field is that I may unconsciously hold back a part of myself in fear of crossing ethical boundaries, by saying or possibly doing something that may offend my client. In addition being prepared to take action if and when an ethical situation arises. I also have to be self- aware of any biases I may be hindering that could or would cause ethical challenges or issues. The Challenge I will have is determining how to deal with an ethical situation when it arises with a client. When a counselor is faced with an ethical dilemma, it can be the professional counselors biggest ical challenge in determining what the best course of action to will be (Forester-Miller & Davis,1996).
The profession of rehabilitation counseling seeks to provide assistance to individuals who suffer from developmental, emotional, mental, and physical disabilities. These professionals give the support needed for struggling individuals to continue leading fulfilling lives, and maintaining their independence. In order for a rehabilitation counselor to provide their services with the highest quality, they must complete their duties all the while pertaining to the appropriate code of ethics. At times, the ability to do so can be challenging, therefore resulting in the need for a rehabilitation counselor to reference a practitioner’s guide for assistance in ethical decision making. The utilization of a secondary source insures that the specialist can make the best possible decisions regarding the person in their care. In order to complete this case study, the provided practitioners guide to ethical decision making, the Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors, and two peer reviewed journal articles, will be used as supplementary tools.
During the time I dated John*, I was living in a therapeutic group home for eating disorder and mental health treatment. John was another resident in the program. He was 16 and I was 14. Disability is one of the most important issues in society because of the many fallacies that have been conjured up by people who have not been exposed to individuals with certain disabilities. This stigma has been incorporated into the notion that people with disabilities are “useless”. People with disabilities do not need to have a physical problem, many have a certain mental state that is not parallel to a fully cognitive person. These disabilities range from extreme physical handicaps to mental issues to a depressive state of mind. All of these fall under the umbrella of the term “disability”. Such biases and prejudices contributed to the discrimination of people with disabilities, but that has been eradicated by the many laws or acts that
Jay has disclosed to the counselor that he is contemplating suicide the same evening and the counselor is aware that he has attempted suicide in the past and has the means to carry out his threat (Argosy University Online. 2015).
