Ethical Issues In The Movie Doubt

In the novel Native Son by Richard Wright, the protagonist engages in certain behavior that most would find socially and morally unacceptable. It is debatable whether Bigger Thomas was truly responsible for what he did, and throughout the novel, the ongoing dilemma is whether or not he deserves sympathy or not. Although some might argue Bigger is deserving of sympathy due to the environment where he grew up, he is not worthy of sympathetic treatment. His immoral actions throughout the novel are so unforgivable that he does not deserve sympathy. The way he treated his family, the murders he committed, how he feels about what he does, and some characters in the novel also going against him, all point to Bigger being a character not deserving of sympathy.

It is difficult to make the decision if Father Flynn is innocent or guilty. In John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt; a parable, he eclipses the truth very well. The scenes about the toy, the camping trip and the undershirt cause much confusion; causing the audience to go back and forth in their minds and doubt Father Flynn. Law says that people are innocent until proven guilty although; realistically, everyone knows that people are guilty until proven innocent. It is very possible that Father Fynn is only helping Donald, because he is less fortunate than the other students at his school; and it is also very possible that he is hurting the child by molesting him. The decision is left to the audience as the jury.

In perhaps the greatest addition to the credibility of Sister Aloysius, Shanley ascribes dialogues to her that states, “When you take a step to address wrongdoing, you are taking a step away from God” (20). In this, Aloysius appears to accept that chasing after someone who does wrong can be wrong in and of itself. She acknowledges the idea that fixing a problem can occasionally only be accomplished by working outside of the parameters set as morally or ethically good. She understands that by going after Father Flynn, she may sin. However, she proceeds anyways. She continues to attempt to protect the boys of her school and bring Father Flynn to the justice she believes he should be brought to. The film portrays the racial tensions between locals of the neighborhood and an Italian-American family in the majority Black and Hispanic neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) in Brooklyn, New York. Spike Lee shows us what a day in the life of the Brooklyn neighborhood consists of and throughout the movie he portrays several different aspects of a modern urban neighborhood, using the many unique personalities of the characters in the movie.

The movie Training Day presents various scenarios of ethical issues and dilemmas. Denzel Washington plays the role of crooked undercover narcotics detective Alonzo Harris, while Ethan Hawke plays new recruit officer Jake Hoyt, who is fighting to do the right thing. Detective Harris believes in street justice while Hoyt disapproves. He exposes officer Hoyt to many situations where he has to decide if he wants to be a part of the team or stand up for justice. Officer Hoyt will have to use his morals and ethical judgment to help him battle through training day.

Have you ever had a feeling of doubt? In the play Doubt by John Patrick Shanley the reader is left with a lot of doubt because Father Flynn, one of the main characters, is being persecuted for sexually harassing a young boy in his class. In this play a pastor by the name of Father Flynn is being investigated because Sister Aloysius is suspicious that he has been sexually harassing a young boy by the name of Donald in their school. Based on the evidence in Patrick Shanley’s play, Doubt: A Parable, I conclude that Father Flynn is not guilty, because Sister A does not like Flynn and Sister A doubts all of her wrong doings after all of this commotion. There are also a lot of small reasons why he should be not guilty.

Through these arguments it is often thought of that Father Flynn is guilty. A reason as to why Father Flynn could be guilty is that he spends a lot of time with Donald Muller. For example, Father Flynn held a special meeting with Donald in the rectory and is often seen walking around the grounds with him as well. This is something that is noticed by many, especially Sister Aloysius. While Sister Aloysius is meeting with Father Flynn she states, “You yourself singled the boy out for special attention. You held a private meeting with him at the rectory” (Shanley 31). In this quote it is clear that Father Flynn has a relationship with Donald Muller that is more than just a mentor. While reading this one can understand that Father Flynn pays attention to Donald Muller to the point of even having a private meeting with him, which is suspicious. However, this position is flawed because Father Flynn is just looking out for Donald due to the fact that Donald sticks out like a sore thumb. Furthermore, Donald is bullied at school because he is different. Donald is bullied, beat on by his father, and the only person he really has there for him is Father Flynn. While meeting with Sister Aloysius, Mrs. Muller acknowledges Father Flynn’s behavior and states, “You know, Father Flynn, Father Flynn. He looks up to him. The man gives him his time, which is what that boy needs. He needs that”

Erin has an ethical and moral responsibility to feed her children so she forces her lawyer Ed Masry to give her a secretarial job after he failed to get her a settlement from the auto accident. To conclude, Atticus is a strong moral figure in the book To Kill a Mockingbird that demonstrates the quality of integrity to the fullest. His integrity helps others to have integrity. To explain, Atticus instils a strong sense of integrity within his children by teaching them by example.
