When one is ethical it means being honest, trustworthy and following good moral standards. An ethical crisis arises when there is a problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose between what’s right or wrong. Recently, Volkswagen experienced such ethical crisis with falsely programmed software in the company’s diesel vehicles that provided false data to regulators regarding the level of emissions produced by cars. The decision made by Volkswagen to be dishonest regarding their product has cost them severely. Not only has it ruined their reputation but financially it has put a huge strain on the company. Questions are now arising as to what role the lawyers and employees played in this ethical crisis and what they could have done to prevent this incident from happening. “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1, King James Version). Your reputation is a far greater asset then material things such as money and wealth. Earning the respect and trust of others is something that individuals as well as organizations should always strive to obtain. As a manager in either the legal office or the engineering department, I would have made sure that maintaining the company’s reputation would have been one of my top priorities. In addition to have preventing this misconduct in the workplace, straightforward guidelines would have been established identifying key components to look out for
