Mickey, his former partner, gives him a medical malpractice case that is sure to settle for a large amount of money. The case of Deborah Ann Kay, a mother who was given anesthetic when she had just eaten inhaled her vomit and is now in a coma. The Donaheys, her sister and brother in law are hoping for a good settlement and Frank assures them that they have a strong case. People from all walks of life face many ethical dilemmas. These dilemmas have consequences. Our worldview determines how we deal with these dilemmas, and guides us to the right decisions. In this essay, I will examine an ethical issues through my Christian worldview. I will also present other viewpoints, and compare them to mine.

In chapter two of the book “Problems from Philosophy”, by James Rachels, the author guided us through the process in which the topic of “Ethics and Objectivity” was discussed and argued. Throughout the chapter, Rachels explores this topic, by discussing several philosophical discussions, regarding ethics, and how it can change our objectivity. As we grow up, our parents’ views on what is morality good and bad is embedded into the way we see issues and situations. One ethical issue that splits society into two groups is the death penalty. In the movies Dead Men Walking and Return to Paradise the death penalty is a controversy due to the different perspectives. Moreover, there are ethical issues and ethical theories such as utilitarianism and ethical formalism that applies to both these movies.

Ethics is one of the most important considerations when making a decision about end of life. It is also where the most controversy lies as arguments, using ethical theories, can be made for and against laws on end of life. “Ethics has at least two primary functions: to guide our actions, and to provide justification for the guidance given” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p. 42). A duty-oriented ethicist would be against euthanasia and physician assisted death. They believe “we can’t stop all pain; what is crucial is that we act with dignity and respect in the face of suffering” (Edge & Groves, 2006, p.40). “Kant’s view is a person committing suicide takes the easy way out, where reason would dictate he or she face their problems” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p.38). Virtue ethicists would also be against euthanasia and physician assisted death. Virtue ethicists hold “it is not only important to do the right thing but equally to have the right disposition, motivation, and traits for being good and doing right” (Edge & Groves, 2006, p.43). As a believer in God, a virtue ethicist would hold suicide as an unreasonable option. They would believe God to be the “sole arbiter of life and death” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p.42) and therefore, the right thing to do would be for God to end their life as he sees fit.
