Ethical judgements are a very potent limiting factor in both the arts and natural sciences, and although these judgements are often times subjective to specific people or cultures, they are extremely beneficial. The exploration of these ethical judgements is vitally important in order to understand why exactly they are thought to limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in these areas, but must also be looked at with a fair and balanced perspective. To begin with, the definition of ethical judgements must be identified. Ethical judgements are “rules” provided by an external source about what is “right” and “wrong”. Essentially, they are what society says are appropriate and sensible decisions. When it comes to the arts and natural sciences, ethical judgements are frequently used to determine if the product is to be commonly accepted or even permissible at all. Ethical judgements serve to limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in many areas, especially the arts and natural sciences, which benefits society in the long run. The arts have a plethora of examples that demonstrate the benefits of ethical judgements in order to preserve morality and dignity of the artists themselves.
