In general terms, Ethics are the norms for conduct that distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
Business research is defined as the application of ethical standards to human actions in the exchange process.
Ethical principles include Honesty, Objectivity, Integrity, Carefulness, Openness, Respect for Intellectual Property, Confidentiality. Ethics plays a very important role in many phases of the research process.
As a researcher:
Three stages involved in the ethical obligations of the researcher:
1) Before the Research Project: During this crucial period, the researchers interview key decision makers to gain sufficient knowledge of the situation. Key here is to translate normal decision issue into a researchable proposition. After study, researchers should honestly assess their capabilities and if they lack, they have to decline the project. Decision makers and researchers should have the understanding of when the research is required. Before beginning a project, the decision maker should be clear about
a) What information is unavailable which the decision maker needs?
b) How to use that information which is gathered
c) Time taken to get that information and cost?
d) Is there any profit or potential benefit which exceeds the cost
e) If competitors have the info? If so, how it affects their performance.
