Ethnicities and Cultural Dynamics

Imagine dining at one of the city's finest ethnic restaurants. People of all classes, races, and ages come to eat here. Located in the downtown area, Golden Dragon is known to the community as both, a great carryout or dine-in restaurant. Not only is it widely acknowledged for it’s wonderful food and services, but also for the diversity of their staff. Sometimes getting credit for having a wide range of diversity, and other times receiving critical remarks for having too much. Though they are of different ethnicities, they get along well with each other as they learn more about one another’s culture.

Though some still live by those standards, it is likely for the roles to be reversed. Women do jobs that are said to have been “for men only” and vice versa. Such jobs include construction, engineering, mechanics and many more. Even today, women employed in those fields are scarce. On the other hand, men are expected to do work that shows their masculinity. Therefore jobs like nursing, childcare, cosmetology and secretarial positions are looked upon as “a woman’s job”. Sometimes small tasks, such as taking out the trash, cleaning countertops or restroom maintenance go unnoticed without a second thought as to what gender was asked to do the task. As the etic, it is obvious that the sexual orientation mattered in some duties of the restaurant more than others.

During the shifts I observed, (Friday, Nov.22, and Sunday, Nov.24, 2001 11am-5pm), all youthful girls worked out front, greeting the customers and taking orders. One guy, who is the manager also worked out front, but ran the register only, unconcerned with trying to befriend the customers. The girls were expected to take orders, take them to the cooks, and then bag the orders. As well as greet the customers upon their entrance and exit of the restaurant. Each of the three girls spoke in soft tones, like they had each been trained to do so. They smiled and spoke in friendly voices; as a result some of the girls even got tips for their service.
