A student/s ethnicity can negatively affect their learning due to barriers such as low language skills and different cultural structures, which can cause adversely affect these students. The student might then demonstrate patterns of lower levels of literacy and numeracy, lower retention rates and difficulties with study, which could result in negative attitudes towards school or problematic school behaviour in accordance to Rich (2000). A teacher could effectively respond to this circumstance through using different types of learning strategies for the student/s, such as through the guidance of Howard Gardner’s theory of eight multiple intelligences (1983;2003), in order to decipher the child’s strongest and weakest intelligences and using
