This paper explores the tensions and synergies between rights, protection, and justice in the context of childhood and youth by exploring child prostitution with a focus on the experiences of young girls ‘Devadasis’ (temple dancer) in rural Karnataka, India. While looking at the historical and cultural factors of Devadasi system of sex work in India and analyzing the causes and consequences of this practice, this paper will put a special focus on the perspective of young girls and how this can challenge common understanding of child prostitution when the practice is social, economically and culturally embedded.
The essay will examine the socio-economic and political angle of this particular practice of child prostitution while drawing parallel examples from ethnographic studies. It will further explore the challenges and risks attached to this subject from a protection perspective and it’s mitigation within the fabric of human rights and social justice model. Considering the limitation of contemporary research on devadasi system, I will use some of the available literature and information whenever possible, otherwise, will discuss how existing research on the culturally compelled practice of child sex work of other societies could also apply to

throughout India, predominately in South (Shankar, 1990, cited in Orchard, 2007, Dasgupta, 2000). They performed various temple duties including decorating shrines, dancing in festivals or important ceremonies, delivering prayer and food to God, singing, all of which were regarded sacred forms of worship (Kersenboom, 1987 cited in Orchard 2007, Orr
Sex trafficking is a global problem that involves the exploitation and abuse of girls as well as women. This paper will discuss the problem, with an emphasis on the views expressed by Paola Monzini in her book Sex Traffic: Prostitution, Crime and Exploitation. The paper will look at the causes, consequences and prevalence rates of sex trafficking and will consider the impact of such factors as globalization and women’s poverty in perpetuating the problem or making it worse. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the ways in which a human rights perspective might translate into positive action to eliminate the trafficking of girls and women.
The sex trade is not a choice; there many situational factors contributing as to how these women and children got into the sex trade. Most of the women and children who are bought and trafficked into this industry are vulnerable or have a background of abuse and neglect (4425 Hossain). Exploiters use the vulnerability to their advantage by making promises of stability and love to lure their victims in. Many
Prostitution, also referred to as “the oldest profession,” has always been a controversial and challenging social issue. It is practiced in many different forms including: call girls, convention prostitutes, apartment prostitutes, hotel prostitutes, house prostitutes, bar girls, streetwalkers, and parking lot lizards (). Civilizations such as the Samarians, and countries including Morocco and parts of India engaged in a form of prostitution known as temple prostitution. Temple prostitution is based on the belief that “generative activity of human beings possessed a mysterious and sacred influence in promoting the fertility of nature” (Clarkson). In other civilizations, such as the Roman and Byzantine Empires, prostitution was looked upon as less of a religious ceremony, and more of a sin practiced by “women of evil life” (ProCon.org). Today those differentiating view are still present in modern society, but there are also new ideologies surrounding the everlasting presence of prostitution. This Essay will use the Symbolic Interactionism Theory to identify those new ideologies, and evaluate the meaning of prostitution within three relationship: the husband and wife, the Call girl and client, and the Pimp and the sex trafficking victim.
Child sex trafficking is the profitable sexual act induced by force, fraud, coercion or a person is lured to have sex before they reach 18 years of age. It includes all the activities of recruiting, harboring, patronizing, advertising, transporting or obtaining children for sexual services involuntarily, through servitude, debt bondage, peonage or slavery. Due to advanced technology, it has acquired new course. It has become a complex phenomenon involving multiple stakeholders at commercial as well as institutional level. It is the modern-day form of slavery perpetrated against minors regardless of their race, class, socioeconomic status, education, gender, cultural conditions or citizenship (“Department of Justice," 2015).
Many countries don’t have enough laws on labor. Many countries still have millions of child laborers, human trafficking for work is becoming more and more common, and many parents cannot support their families on their own because of low paying jobs or not enough jobs so children have to go into labor.
Prostitution of minors occurs all around the world. We do not notice because it may not concern us, and it is difficult to act when something does not affect us in any way. It affects you if you have children or nieces who are under age right now selling themselves to help out their families who are in need of money. What would you do right then to help them get out of that situation? That's what's going on in Europe right now when you visit, is the same thing that is happening in Mexico. There are many young girls selling themselves because they have to work to support their family.
Being sold for money, stolen from your family, being abused, raped, or neglected is not what any girl would have imagined could happen to them in their lives. Tragically it happens everyday and sex trafficking has become a really big problem in the past few years. There is an estimate of approximately 20.9 million current victims of sex trafficking globally (The Facts). Some of these girls will never be able to now live a normal life, as their owners rely on them for their so called “business” to survive in this world.
This paper explores the impact of child trafficking in society. Poverty, gender inequality, and globalization are some risk factors that contribute to child trafficking. Even if governments, the United Nations and other important human rights institutions strive to stop the propagation of this pandemic, it seems not enough. What is more, the extent of the problem lies on how some societies look at minor prostitution and the meaning of human life. In many poor countries sexual exploitation of minors; particularly girls, is not considered a big deal when it helps to support the family. Thereby, child trafficking continues and excels as to become one of the most important and profitable businesses around the world. Terminologies such as human trafficking and/ or domestic minor sex trafficking will direct the reader toward a more deep understanding of the root of the problem. Human trafficking deeply wounds society and people’s life; however, some countries are little concerned of the extent of this particular trade among minorities. Lack of policies and protection from governments empower organized crime groups to continue the trafficking of children around the world. Although the NASW (National Association of social workers) code of ethics, social justice and dignity and worth of the person play an important role when assisting survivors of child trafficking, social workers are called to identify and find ways to meet survivors’ needs during the healing process.
Forced child prostitution is all over the world. However I am talking specifically about human trafficking overseas. This is one of the most known places for Child Prostitution. Children are being snatched and forced to do drugs and sell their bodies to make money for the pimp’s. This is an issue to our country because our children are being kidnapped. We really can’t do much here because they are extremely hard to find. When you’re running a business like this you have to make sure you never get caught because if they find you, there will be hell to pay. The least penalty there is for forced child prostitution is life in prison. Keep reading as I start to unravel different facts you may or may not have known about forced child prostitution in Europe.
To begin with, in Cambodia, human trafficking has been a pertinent problem for the past two decades, mainly because of myths, poverty, and traditions. In the country, a tradition often surfaces about men having a great desire to have sexual intercourse with those who are pure and young because it will remove all of their sins. The myth is that when men had sexual relationships with virgins, it would grant them luck and good health. For this reason, an abundance of pedophiles used to visit Cambodia because they knew that the country condoned prostitution (Pesta). Due to the myth and the command of pedophiles for prepubescent girls, brothels are targeting those younger and younger. Children as young as four are being sent into the sex trade, and “prostitution has become a ‘fixture of urban life’ in Cambodia” (“The Face of”). Furthermore, “visiting prostitutes has become a common and accepted male pastime [in the country]” (Sidner). The abundance of people in Cambodia visiting the cities for the sole purpose of sex sullies the reputation of the country, and it puts the

The modern world today is proud to recognize the equality that has been acknowledged between age, gender, and race. Women are beginning to be treated as equals with men, in new customs, lifestyle, society, and economy. Today, women are freer and are liberated from their traditional roles as housewives, and are pursuing their hopes and dreams. However, this is not the case in many regions of the world. In the developing countries, thousands of females are dehumanized by prostitution and the trafficking of women and children is dehumanizing which serves only to benefit men. It exploits and violates the rights of women in the developing world. Sexual exploitation, which includes sex tourism,
Child prostitution is prostitution that involves exploiting children for a sexual act. The word usually refers to prostitution of a minor, or someone who is under the legal age of consent. In most places child prostitution is illegal, but not all. Sex trafficking is usually the first step to child prostitution. Sex trafficking is when a child is kidnapped or tricked into becoming involved in the black market sex trade or “survival sex.” “Survival sex” is when a child forced to engage in sexual acts to obtain basic life essentials.
The negative impact of prostitution is also on the children of prostitutes. In this Islam country, there is the existence of early marriage, which leads to males having sexual intercourse with the girls under 18 years old. That is the reason why the demand for child sex workers from 13 to 18 years old exists. Approximately 300 children live in a brothel and they have witnessed sex working environments such as sexual abuse, drugs, and violence. They go to schools and other children are not willing to sit next to them. They are bullied by their classmates because of their mother’s profession. Moreover, they live in the brothel and witness the work that their mothers do, which affects
The commercial sexual exploitation of humans is the fastest growing international crime, earning an estimated 100 billion dollars a year. About 276 women and children are trafficked daily into sexual slavery; unfortunately less than one percent of these victims will ever be rescued or participate in any kind of judicial process. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, one in six endangered runaways are sex trafficking victims. Children involved in child prostitution are often required to work with law enforcement in the arrest and prosecution of their pimp or trafficker in order to avoid jail time. Frequently the child victims are required to call the abuser and get them to admit that they will use the child for sexual acts in the presence of law enforcement for a successful arrest and prosecution. This process can be very damaging to the child if not handled correctly. In a certain account a young woman that was required to make such a call, was told by her abuser “You’re a hoe, you’re a hope to die hoe, and you’re always going to be a hoe. Even your dad knew you were a hoe and that is why he sexually abused you when you were five.” Child prostitution begins at home; most children that become prostitutes in the United States are often sexually abused by their first caregivers. Often the child whom suffered the abuse demeans and pushes away individuals who try to help, believing they aren’t worth helping. The image below demonstrates symbols
