Ethos Pathos and Logos
In the article, “To Donate your Kidney Click Here” by Daniela Lamas, the authority derives from social media websites that deal with the matter of organ transplants and finding potential donors. Facebook was the social media site used to connect sick patients with future organ donors. Lamas uses three concepts in her article called ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is used to back up the author’s arguments, and prove she is reliable and trustworthy. Pathos shows mostly emotional and personal stories of patients. I am presenting the same problem here. Ethos Pathos Logos and I am also kind of confuse because I don’t know if the thesis statement is supposed to include them or if I am able to introduce them with in the paragraphs of the essay without mention them in my thesis. If you can read this post a reply to it, I will greatly appreciate it. Despite that I also think I did a good job with my thesis and now I need to re arrange the essay for Ethos pathos and Logos.
All the videos present logos, ethos, and pathos. Some may show it more than other videos, the best video that shows all 3 of this rhetoric is the first video. In the first video Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks were talking about how amazing Claudette was for standing up for herself. In addition, some of the ways they show everything that is happening is by logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is shown when the NAACP were trying to find out who can be the representative of the group and how they can stand up to what happened when Claudette was seating in the white section of the bus and did not move.
In Neil Postman’s novel, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he argues that rationality in America has become dictated by television. Through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, Postman demonstrates that his claim is valid and reliable. Athletes in America are known to be some of the highest paid athletes in the world. Multi-million dollar contracts and extreme amounts of money. They play extreme amounts of games and get paid what the general public would think to be a lot. In reality, they don’t get paid enough. In The Cauldron article, Leland Faust try’s to persuade the audience about athletes paychecks. He effectively uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to persuade the audience into believing athletes should be paid more.
The use of LEGOs is an extraordinary thing, but it is shocking to see exactly how controversial a small toy can become. People of all ages have been found to enjoy this toy. Companies and organizations such as MIT and NASA have even found a use for them. The toy has become known as a child’s imagination tool and has not been exclusively used for adults. The documentary shows that adults come together to compete in competitions on who can create the greatest LEGO sculpture. Many people may not know just how big this toy is used around the world.
Ethos, pathos, and logos are all devices that Barbara Ehrenreich effectively uses throughout her novel Nickel and Dimed to prove that America needs to address the commonly overlooked issue of poverty within every community. It is important that she uses all three devices because they help support her argument by increasing her credibility, connecting to the readers’ emotions, and appealing to their sense of logic. The combination of these devices puts a sense of urgency on the problem Ehrenreich is addressing and therefore creates an effective argument.
The article for “Aveeno Active Naturals,” advertises their lotion through extensive use of ethos, pathos and logos. With the use of various techniques and phrasing, they favorably present their product and provide evidence to convince a customer to buy their lotion. They use ethos by featuring the widely known actress, Jennifer Aniston. They extend their credibility by writing on the label,“dermatologist recommendations” and being a famously known, well-working brand. They use pathos through selective phrases such as “Naturally beautiful results,” the promise of skin thats soft to the touch and the use of this lotion will be consumingly delightful. Today I am here to take about Ethos, pathos, and Logos and how my discourse community influenced my use of these devices to join other communities. If you do not know what a discourse community is, then it is a group of people who share knowledge of a particular topic, similar backgrounds and experiences etc. my discourse community was High school broadcasting which for most students they would never join because it is a very tech-savvy class. At our school the announcements were not done by an administrator, we had video feed to every classroom in which the broadcasting class would do the news and create humorous shorts to inform and entertain anyone who was watching .Our job as a class was to inform students on a day to day basis,
The rhetorical device that I thought was most effective was his use of Pathos. I believe his purpose for using this type of rhetoric is to reach the heart of those he was writing to in hopes of moving them so much so that they feel a, “call to action,” so to speak. While some may argue that Martin Luther King, Jr.’s(MLK) use of logos was most effective, I disagree because while it is possible to persuade someone with logic, wouldn’t you feel compelled to act immediately if something moves your heart rather than waiting for your brain to convince your heart and then act. This cartoon appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos in a variety of ways. Ethos is "what modern students of communication refer to as credibility" (Lucas 353). Ethos is shown by the figures at the bottom stating that they held her seat open since 1955 to mark the year she stood up for her rights. Pathos is depicted through the pride illustrated in the cartoon. For example, it shows Rosa Parks entering heaven as angels say "we have something in the front row for you..." because she fought for her spot on the bus and changed the way of life for future African Americans. In the debate presented by Intelligence Squared, Don’t eat anything with a face, professor Naal Bernard and lectern Gene Bauer argue for this movement. Oppose to the movement are Chris Masterjohn and Joel Salatin. During the debate, each speaker takes the time to present their side of the argument and provide counters to statements made by the conflicting party. Although each speaker utilized logos, pathos and ethos, the speakers who argued for the consumption of meat had the most masterfully crafted arguments and fashioned a more effective standpoint in the debate. Of the rhetorical devices used by the pro-meat party, the most prevalent and effective was that of logos, or logic.
In this essay, I will closely examine the role of ethos, pathos, and logos as they were utilized in the 1992 Presidential Debate video clip. Throughout Clinton and Bush’s debates, they used the three options of persuasion effectively and discretely; however, it is evident that out of the three ways of persuasion, the candidates used ‘pathos’ because of the content they were providing. It was apparent that Bill Clinton was more prepared to display forms of persuasion than George H.W. Bush was because Clinton had prior experience dealing with lower income people. In the upcoming paragraphs, I will explain and analyze how each candidate made use of the three forms of persuasion: logos, pathos, and ethos.
The term Logos is a logic, objective, proof, reason. It is a fact or incident that happened in a period of time. Whereas pathos is a feeling, empathy, values. Similarly, Ethos is a trust, credibility. The video has used a huge number of a rhetorical plan to get point across including logos, ethos, and pathos.
To begin with, my grammar used to be worse than it is. It was interesting to learn about Ethos, Pathos and Logos. I did not know about the difference of advertisements, essays and topics. However it is not only thing that I found interesting. Some of the essays that we read was interesting as well. My writing is improved and now I know how to analyze essays. Also I make less grammar mistakes. For example, the structure of my essays is organized and coherent.
