James Brown is American funk and soul artist who is well-known as the ‘Godfather of Soul’ and he was one of the most iconic figures in soul and funk music from 1950s. James had inspired a lot of artists and also on some genres. For example, his rhythmical funk songs were sampled on some hip-hop genre songs and influenced on the hip-hop genre’s development. Brown was known as his unique soulful voice with great showmanship. Brown was also known for his work of social Activist, writing songs about social problems. Some of his well-known songs are “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” (1965), “I Got You (I Feel Good)” (1965), and “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” (1966). Even though his greatest hits are from 1960s, a lot of these songs are still used in the commercials, films, and T.V. shows even in nowadays.

This performance is before her last album was released and features more of her past relationships in her music, so this concert was not about happy party music, it was a deep soulful experience.

Aretha Louise Franklin also known as the Queen of Soul was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis Tennessee. She is known for being a solo singer, and also a very talented pianist. Soul, R&B, Jazz, and Gospel are genres that she sings. Throughout her career she signed with Colombia Records and has released many popular singles that would now be considered classical. Aretha became the first female artist to be introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Up until this day Aretha is still alive living at age seventy two and has won many Grammy awards and considered one of the most honored artist.
In total, Basie won nine Grammy Awards, but his biggest one was the one he won in 1958. When he received that Grammy, he became the first African-American male to receive a Grammy. Besides his Grammys, a couple of Basie’s songs were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame such as “April in Paris” and “Everyday I have the blues”. He had recorded over 480 albums. Basie was often recognized for his understated yet captivating style of piano playing and his precise, impeccable musical leadership. Basie set high standards for future jazz artist.
Barbara Charline Jordan contributed many things to help equality for African-Americans and to put an impact on society. She was a lawyer, educator, and was the first African-American women from the south to join Congress. Ever since she was in high school, Barbara had been a very talented public speaker. As a result of being such an inspirational speaker, she gave the opening speech for President Nixon impeachment hearing in 1974. Barbara’s time in Congress ended after three terms and became a professor and policy advocate.

James Baldwin was born on August 2nd, 1924 in Harlem, New York to a young single mother named Emma Jones. She never talked about James’s biological father because of his drug abuse and she didn’t want her baby boy to be put in danger by her ex-husband’s problems, but Emma went on to marry a Baptist Minister named David Baldwin when James was about three years old. James and his stepfather had a strained relationship and even though this was true James still tried to follow in his stepfather’s footsteps. James also referred to his stepfather as his actual father. When James reached his teen years he served as a youth minister in a Harlem Pentecostal church. He started at the age of 14 and stopped at the age of 16. As James went through high school, he demonstrated a true gift for writing and a true love for reading. The high school, he attended was DeWitt-Clinton High School in Bronx New York. Baldwin worked on the school Magazine with future famous Richard Avedon.
