When I was very little, my aunt provided me with a gift that has since allowed me to incessantly express my creativity. That gift was a sewing machine that I was too small to use at the time. My aunt, talented enough to create award-winning quilts, moved away and was unable to teach me how to use the machine. I took it upon myself to learn the basics from the manual and start to sew straight and zigzag lines of varying widths and colors. Being so little at the time, I wasn’t nearly satisfied with this. I wanted a finished product. I wanted something that clearly indicated hard work, planning, effort, and patience, like the myriad of fabrics meticulously pieced together in one of my aunt’s stunning quilts. I needed a to learn the tricks of the trade, so I would pack up my sewing machine and go to the home of an elderly Portuguese woman in my spare time. Sewing was her past profession and now, just a hobby. She took her time, asking for nothing in …show more content…
Although tacky and maybe somewhat crooked, I proudly handed that pillow to my aunt the next time I saw her. When I visit her house, to this day, the pillow still sits on the living room couch. It’s impossible to describe the satisfaction I feel when giving someone something that I created myself. Although there are occasional times where I have to rip apart seams, part of sewing is being able to fix your mistakes and still generate a quality piece. The simple gifts that I was given turned into countless gifts for my family and friends, and each built confidence in me. I have acquired an enjoyable hobby and learned a lot about myself. Sewing has shown me to strive to be successful so I can proudly share my accomplishments and it has taught me to put total effort into my work from start to finish. Also, I have learned to manage money and keep track of my own inventory for craft fairs, flea markets, and special
The both stories give you a clear understanding of what the characters think about the quilts and why they're so important. The main idea behind the quilts is to let the reader know what the characters have been through and what memories were formed in their lives. In “Everyday Use”, The quilt was made from their grandma's old dress and the grandpa army uniform. In “My Mother Pieced Quilts”, the mom used old dresses and nightgowns. The Daughter reflects on her mother's memories when she runs down and up of the quilt. There are sculptures of their family and in the quilt, there's death and life, love. The quilt becomes a
Quilts are traditionally thought of as precious antiques that illustrate rich history and imagery. Their fabric is laced with beautiful patterns accounting tales of the past that older generations with to preserve. In Marilyn Nelson Waniek's poem, "The Century Quilt," Nelson employs structure, vivid imagery, and a fanciful tone to illustrate how a family quilt is used to connect generations with one another with this precious family heirloom.
Grandma's voice was warm, gentle, even beautiful. My grandmother was beautiful, there could be millions of people singing, and I'd still be able to pick hers out its so beautiful. I laid there on the couch listening to her gentle voice, smiling every time she brushed her gentle fingers thoroughly my brown hair. But her voice was quickly silenced by the loud chomps of what sounded like a bear. It was grandpa he was up, dressed, and gobbling down some eggs and bacon.
The capture of the bead as it slides along the thread among various colors compliments the unfinished beadwork. The development that happens throughout this process is often tedious and tests even my patience at times, but by sticking to my project I am almost always rewarded. Almost always because even when I envision what the pattern will turn out to be I find myself restarting to the very beginning. My greatest skill is keeping my Native American culture alive and breathing. By beading there’s a sense of peace and pride for my people and myself. My mother taught me ever since I was little, showing me how to make the simplest of earrings and bracelets to the more complex earrings and medallions. I remember my first completed beadwork. It
Stepping off the stage after being announced as the Ohio representative to the National Make It With Wool contest was thrilling. I would be traveling to Scottsdale, Arizona to compete against skilled sewists from across the nation! I didn’t get long to revel in my accomplishment, or to enjoy the sudden rush of euphoria that bubbled up; Daphne, the assistant director, immediately came
Culturally, the symbolism of a quilt is understood to be an heirloom piece that is closely guarded and highly prized. The ownership of the quilt and the generational lines it passes down is known before the piecing is begun. Stitching the pieces together is done by groups of women. The tiny bits of cloth each carry a memory, one from grandpa's shirt, one square from an aunt's Christmas dress, a piece from the flannel nightgown a mother wore as she pulled her sick child close to her bosom. The pieces are carefully and artistically pieced together into a collage of
Over the course of the semester, we have read many short stories that have shared very similar themes. The two stories that stood out the most to me were You Want Me White and The Youngest Doll. Not only were the stories both very compelling they share parallel themes such a social issues concerning women and form of gender disparity. Both authors Alfosina Storni and Rosario Ferre wrote during a time male dominance was an issue, women were looked at as objects that needed to devote themselves to their men.
Finally old enough to work I knew I would have to to help my mother with bills, but when I realized there would be money left over I knew I could fulfill my desire to cosplay. Creating my costume, I cherished every detail. The color of the thread, the type of stitch, specialized needles, stretch-fabric capacity, fabric-light reflection, pinning technique, measuring slack, seam correction… if you knew all of this you would have been able to create a sleeve. It was so much fun. Knowing that it was the result of my own months of effort, research, and investment I was proud; despite the flaws I made in its
The same objects that her mother and Maggie use everyday, Wangero wants to use artistically. The butter churn top she will use as a "centerpiece for the alcove table,"(69) but the quilts Wangero wants to "Hang them As if that was the only thing you could do with quilts."(70) But of course "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts! She'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use."(70) Consequently, the choice is between having objects just for show, or using the objects for what they were made.
A truly fine cloth took days and lots of help to
When I first saw the artwork, I didn't know what to think. Some of the artwork seemed ordinary. I remember one of the art displays as a chair with pillows on it. At first, I questioned whether it was art. When I looked a little closer, the art was the pillow. The pillow was handcrafted out of Indigo Vat. Indigo is a natural dye that makes a deep connection with the human eye. In hopes of using indigo, artist Kathy Bachofer, catches the viewer’s eye through color as well as through patterns and lines. In addition to Kathy Bachofer’s art, Victoria Snyder’s work was fascinating to look at as well as very eye-catching. My first impression of her work was that it’s amazing and unique. In which she chose to display her art. She could’ve chosen to
As an artist, I was inspired by the work of Lucy Parker Telles and Kari Lonning. They inspired me to create my own piece of artwork called “basket weaving.” In my piece of artwork, I am trying to show the happiness of mother nature. My main intention though is the basket itself because it’s something that I actually owe and its mine to keep as a memory through the course of my life and high school years.
Sewing is a great passion of mine, I can make blankets, pillows, clothes, and more. You can give me any material and I will make something useful. One time I sewed together a small bag made entirely out of Capri sun pouches. I can provide all of these blankets and clothes for the people to keep them warm through the winter and the chilly summer nights.
Through the research part of the process I learned how pervasive technology has become. It is scary enough how much we depend on it but to see how even things that seem to be set in stone like death is being altered by our own creations was really mind-blowing. Things like this you never realize although it is happening right now, to all of us. The research part altered my own perspective in ways I never had expected it to. A once conservative uploader of personal ideas and events in fear of them being shared with everyone with access to social media outlets, I am, selfishly enough, considering posting regularly to leave a presence for the generations to come. Another thing that I learned was how we wrongfully attempt to blame technology
For those who do not know crochet is a needlework technique performed using a hook plus fiber or other similar material. Most typically, this material is yarn or crochet thread, but it might also be fabric, wire, twine, or other innovative material. The goal of crocheting is to complete a popular project, by creating objects that are useful, attractive or beneficial in some way. Popular projects include afghans, baby blankets, baby booties, scarves, hats, granny squares, shawls, purses, tote bags and others(Solovay Crochet Expert, A. (2014). Upon further research I learned that actual crochet products first
