Ask me not how she died, rather ask me how she lived!

How do you measure greatness? People often confuse notoriety and fame with greatness, but I would say that the greatness of a person is measured by the compassion and love they show towards others-- in short-- charity. As the Bible says in Corinthians, “If I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have charity, I am nothing.”

It is all too easy to ignore the needs of those around us. But Mother did not. She taught us that as Christians, we are directed by God to love our neighbor. To use her words, “Love. Each. Other.”

Always one to lead by example, Mother took every opportunity to uplift others with her love. It did not matter if they were standing in a

Mother bought 48 of them. In the grand scheme of things, they were all humble little tasks, but I’m sure the recipients of Mother’s compassion felt that her efforts were both great and noble.

How many times, particularly in this difficult economy, have we passed up an opportunity to give to others? I’d like all of us to remember this… a woman who did not drive and for most of her life had almost no money to contribute to others is best remembered for her charity. We can keep Mother’s spirit alive by continuing her work to uplift and encourage those around us. But just how does one do this? It’s easy, we simply follow the rules Mother lived by:

Be a good example. People watch what you do more than they listen to what you say. Be worth emulating.

Care. Take a genuine interest in those around you, even if you don’t know their name and may never see them again.

Share. You may be the only one who can touch someone with your inspiring message, be it word or deed. As Mother knew, people love a good story. Share yours.

Relish the joy in the small things. Like the variety in a box of Whitman’s Sampler. The color of a maple leaf in fall. A letter from a loved one.

These are Mother’s lessons. I would like to add one more. “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us finish the work we are in.” Abraham Lincoln spoke those words at his Second Inauguration, but they
